Cool summary eh?Cortex Command is a 2-dimensional side-scrolling action game developed by Data Realms. In the game, the player takes the role of a disembodied brain, who controls various clones and robots to achieve his aims. The main goal of the game is mining gold, which is used to purchase new clones, weaponry and craft which is then used to eliminate competitors. As the brain is weak, the player must manage his resources carefully, protecting the brain, mining gold and fighting off enemies. The game includes the ability for players to create mods (additions and changes to the game) with the built in Lua programming applet, and simple scripting.
CC starts off with a "cutscene" consisting entirely of pictures, text, and looped music that reminds me of the arcade era, and I hate the music as much now as I did then. You can skip the cutscene by pressing Spacebar, which is odd because the game makes no mention of this. Pressing Escape [The logical choice] will send you right back to desktop, making your head implode.
Once you finally get to the main menu, you can choose between Campaign and Skirmish modes. I was surprised to find that the Skirmish mode had multiplayer, but sadly it was local only. Most people at this point would be rejoicing, but let me remind you that you're sharing one mouse and one keyboard. The potential for disaster is high.
Solo mode is a bit more promising. A meager tutorial teaches you the basic mechanics of the game, then CC hands over the controls and says "Have fun". 4 out of the five missions included in this build, which is still being designed, allow for experiment and toying around with all awesome weapons and "bodiez".
The psychics in this game are fantastic, one of the shining lights of the entire game. You see, all of your new weapons and soldiers are delivered via space, either through Dropship or Drop Pod. Drop Pods are dangerous and explode after one use, but dropships can be shot down. Successfully hitting one of the engines will cause the dropship to either spiral down to earth or explode midair. Either will send dozens of pieces of metal flying everywhere, each one capable of crushing someone or something.
You scared of that machine gun emplacement? Tunnel under it and bury it. Climb above it and drop bombs, or just drop a drop pod on it. The options are endless.
However, annoyingly, these physics have a dark side. The AI isn't particularly bright, in fact it's one of the stupider I've encountered. It's not uncommon to have the beginning dropship drop off your brain and a few small soldiers, and then fall over and crush all of them like a Saturday morning cartoon, equaling game over.
Modding is extremely easy for both installing, and making. Or so I've heard anyway, I'm not a modder so I wouldn't really know what constitutes "Easy", but there's dozens if not hundreds of mods already available, and many more are works in progress.
It's a tad expensive for an indie game, especially one that's still in progress and future is far from certain, but it's an entertaining way to spend 15 minutes or so if you're willing to put up with stupid AI that sometimes dicks you.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention.
There's a rocket launcher that shoots chainsaws. That is all.
Note: It's been a while since I did a review, might be a little rusty. Lemme know how I can improve. Yes, I know I need to put pictures in. But quite frankly I can't be assed.
