Anyone feel like THIS is a game that is long overdue for a HD upgrade?

I'm really wary of the idea of current-day Squeenix trying to "remaster" FFVI. I'd love to see it reintroduced to younger gamers who might otherwise be turned off by 16-bit graphics, but I can't trust the company to not utterly botch it up.

Also... 20 years ago? Jeez, I remember picking it up at the store on release day and practically racing home with it in my hands.

Funny that here in the US it was FFIII, because it's my 3rd favorite of the series with the original PlayStation FFT being my favorite and FFII (IV) being my 2nd favorite. FFT is easy to explain, in my opinion it's got the best story and I love how you can take the original 6 generic cadets they give you at the beginning of the game and turn them into badass heroes in their own right. I love giving them their own little back-stories.

It's harder to say why I like IV more than VI, though. There's just a certain intangible something I can't place my finger on that makes me like it more.

That said, I absolutely loved VI. It was the first FF I beat on my own, and I've played through it more times than I can count.

Favorite Party:
Sabin
Cyan
Shadow
Gogo

As for an HD remake, eh, I prefer it in it's 16bit glory. :p

FFVI might be one of the best, but I don't think it needs a remake, polygonal or HD sprites. It's also just behind the first two and IV in being given the most exposure, anyway. In fact, now that I look at some lists, every main series 2D FF has been milked at least 4 times after its original release.

Since FFVII wont ever get the official graphical update it desperately needs (13 years of Popeye arms?), I'm still waiting for IX to get better attention than just a PSN re-release. Or maybe they should take advantage of online connectivity and remake the original Crystal Chronicles? Or give us a compilation of the Tactics and Tactics Advance series?

I agree with Wolf anyway, today's Square will make it into a cash grab. They just released it again on iOS and Android. What more can they do besides either add DLC or re-release again (in those stores or somewhere else) at a higher price with some effortless bonus put in it?

I kinda like how FF6 attempted to fit characters into job "archetypes", whilst also giving them backstories of their own, heck, even Gau is some sort of wildchild abandoned by his father because Death by Childbirth was supposedly demonic then when you actually find him, turns out that he turned into a heavy drunk. i don't see Square actually making an effort into something like a 3D FF6, the cast of each game after 3 temporarily explodes then settles down. it might be a hassle having 16 or so character models just for battles, 16 low poly models for the overworld. FF3 sidesteps the model issue by having 4 basic freelancer appearances, but have 2 gendered appearances for class armor with minor differences between characters.

That, and characters tends to have core features that persists though classes like pendants, belts and bows. could arguably say that going 3D with FF6 might be too detracting, on the one hand the music and graphics is pretty nice for the SNES, but then again they could slip and introduce things like FF4's Augments which seems kinda detrimental to what would be seen as a 3D remake, even worse if you're playing the game blind or you're playing expecting that everything you know about previous releases would be useful.

Doesn't need a complete overhaul, but some tidying up to make it look pretty on a big screen and maybe remaster the soundtrack a bit. I'd rather see Suikoden get a boost though.

Has it really been 20 years? I remember opening this on Christmas with my sister and we could not believe it (since the stores were sold out). Spent the entire christmas break glued to the tele playing that damn thing. My gosh, how time flies.

As for an HD remake, I would not mind one but I don't think it needs one. I am surprised that one hasn't been made though.

Agreed, it's still one of the best RPGs I have ever played. I have played that game so many times and suplexed so many trains and dinosaurs...fun times. ^_^

Now for some FF6 music from huskybythegeek:

I don't know about an HD upgrade (well...maybe, I love the sprites though), but an official re-release for the anniversary would be lovely.

I mean, like the graphics upgraded to something like 'Child of Light' or even Ni No Kuni levels.

Hell, I'd give my left nut/ovary for FF6 to be redone in Amano's art style.

After what they did to the iOS/Android version...no, just no. I'll stick to my JP copy or my NA GBA copy.

Seconded. Look, there are some problems with the translations of the game here in the west, and the best translation -GBA- has low-quality sound, so nothing is perfect. But, the game is great enough as-is on any platform, and I would not change a pixel if it meant letting the current Square touch the thing.

EDIT:

Favorite Pary:

Locke - 79,992 dmg per "Fight" command
Celes - Economizer + Gem Box
Sabin - Bum Rush. . . the worst name for a great skill
Terra - For healing/ attack with Illumina

Amazing game. There are so many different parties and variants available to play through it, and it's fairly obvious that Squaresoft went overboard in producing it; only instead of several solid hours of CGI cutscenes (this being the SNES), we instead got:
-Ridiculous sums of gameplay for its time
-The single best end-boss music score of all time (it's a 4 part epic)
-A 16-bit Opera (and the only one as far as I know)
-The single most awesome act of manliness on record: Sabin Suplexes a train. A speeding train. THE speeding train of the damned. There is not enough 'METAL \n/p' in the world to describe that.

FAVORITE PARTY:

While I'm a fan of Sabin, Setzer, Edgar, Terra, there's really only one proper way to end FF6.

Gau -> Rage -> Nightshade

Kefka is so moved by the power of love, he kills himself.
No, I am not kidding.

Love me some FFVI. I never got around to finishing it because JRPGs are hella long and FFVI gameplay isn't that interesting to me. Still, one of the better stories I've seen in an RPG. The Beginning of the Second half with the song "dark world" playing still moves me.

Also, OverClocked Remix's FFVI album "Balance & Ruin" is fucking fantastic.

What did they do to it because it looks and plays fine to me?

The sprite work feels like it really doesn't match the color towns of a lot of towns to me. Bright and colorful characters up against dark backdrops feels like someone was learning how to use a green screen.

Wow. The game that more or less was my childhood was released 20 years ago today. Wow.

As sacrilegious as it is to say this, I really don't care for Amano's art style.

And though it seems to be even FURTHER sacrilege, I'd be fine with seeing it in anime style, like Ni No Kuni.

I feel old.

I only first played this game when it was released on the GBA (with all the tweaks and better translation) and I ended it loving it more than any of the previous ones i've played.

I'd enjoy a visual update keep it 2D but ad looooooooooooooooooooooads more detail and some orchestrated music add a few new features like extra dungeons or even logs of the canon and unseen concept art or something.

Oh yeah, when I saw this thread I knew I had to post that moment:

Glorious.

OT: One of the best. First played it years after the fact but it holds up well. Too bad we can't trust Square to make a decent remake of it or VII anymore.
