Make Refrigerator Art With This Wii Tablet

THQ is hoping families will get in touch with their inner artists and use its uDraw GameTablet to create digital masterpieces.

There's big money to be made in the field of Wii accessories and THQ is clearly hoping to turn its lackluster profits around with its upcoming uDraw GameTablet, a new digital sketchpad designed specifically for Nintendo's home console. According to the publisher, there's a little something for everyone here: Not only can you draw and play games with your family, but students will also - theoretically - be able to use the hardware as a learning tool.

THQ is clearly trying to market the uDraw GameTablet to entire families. One of its big selling points is that kids can save their artwork to an SD card and then, "print their artwork out for display on the refrigerator."

Meanwhile, according to Martin Good, an Executive Vice President of THQ, "students can improve their skills through in-game tutorial lessons. And the whole family can sit down together for family game time with products like Pictionary." That part about students using the hardware to learn seems plausible, but it appears to be nothing but puffery at the moment, since none of the announced uDraw-compatible games sound particularly educational.

The tablet will ship with uDraw Studio with a suggested price tag of $69.99. Meanwhile, Pictionary and Dood's Big Adventure (which are being designed with the hardware specifically in mind) will be released on the same day. The hardware and these games are currently scheduled to be released in 2011.

Of course, the first thing I thought of when I read about this device was how it'd be great for a Wii version of Mario Paint. Nintendo has yet to announce any such plans, but I'm sure there are a number of gamers who would happily embrace a Mario Paint/uDraw GameTablet bundle.

What happened to the old-fashion crayon and paper drawing?
70$ for that is ridiculous

Seriously? Who is desperate enough to buy this?

Oh Nintendo, when will you stop being so ridiculous? Then again, people must buy this stuff to actually warrant its creation in the first place! My faith in humanity has lowered further.

Ok, who here, at any time, has sat down with their family to use the computer.

Mealtimes alone are difficult enough.

I can't be the only person who's mind instantly thought something along the lines:

'Damn shame they didn't make in time for Okami'.

Oh well I guess there's always Okamiden--
Oh wait that's for the DS...

*gives gold star*

Well done THQ!

Not only have you named a product with highest levels of whimsicality but you also have/are displaying arrogance at the highest level (*ahem* parring with Apple).

on a more serious tone, well I guess it is far cheaper than going adobe but I don't think anyone will take this seriously (figures.) but why does Nintendo keep on re-releasing things that they have done in the past? are Nintendo now ruled by conservatives?

Students? Learning tool? Students of what? Basic math?
I believe the purpose of the device in terms of learning is most likely to teach elementary students at least 1st grade upwards the basics of art and design. Just a guess.

For the product itself, I'm willing to give it a shot, might be nice substitute for Mario Paint since Nintendo hasn't thought about bringing a Wii version of that game yer

errr, the feeling is mutual.

what part didn't you get?
Nintendo keep on re-releasing things that they have done in the past
PowerGlove then Wii remote.

SNES Mouse then GameTablet (meh, regardless the fulfil the same purpose)
and a whole bunch of other things/games.

the "conservatives" part is rather self-explanatory, it has more than one meaning and it's not political, look it up as it shall teach you a word

So, that's about $220-$270 for a Wii and this uDraw tablet

or $300 for a middle of the road professional Wacom tablet

Yeah, thanks but no thanks - I already have a PC, and even if I didn't already have a Wacom - it would be a better deal to get one.

The "Nintendo" bit. Because this is THQ we're talking about.

I dont think that anyone who would need a professional tablet would purchase one with wii compatibility....

My point was that why would anybody purchase one with wii compatibility, when you could get one that your kids won't "outgrow" for the PC you probably already have?

Even Wacom's bargin basement ones have more features than that Wii tablet, for about the same price.

My point is that I really dont think that they are trying to cater to the same markets. This is clearly meant to be for family games, like pictionary etc. I dont think i have ever seen a professional tablet packaged with a pictionary game, or one which has been designed with family gaming in mind.

Of all the stupid things that companies try to convince people to attach to Wii controllers, I think this one has to be least stupid. It seems like it would be neat for kids and families and doesn't cost too much...

EDIT: Actually, the BEST Wii connectivity thing is definitely that stuffed animal you put the wiimote into and use to control the game. XD That was interesting.
