Almost a quarter of the way through!
#80: "So Good" by B.o.B.
I have heard some B.o.B. stuff, but only when he is teamed up with an artist. That said, I usually enjoy the songs where he is teamed up with an artist, so let's see how he is solo.
Music is fairly nice. The piano riff is a bit repetitive, but it does give the beat a more unique flow. As for the rapping, B.o.B is a pretty solid rapper. He has nice flow, even if he isn't the fastest rapper.
This is a love song. Basically, he's telling a girl all the stuff he will give her and do for her, telling her she's never had it so good.
Normally, I dislike songs like this. However, B.o.B. is good at making his words sound genuine. You really believe that he is in love with this girl, and trying to win her affections. He does have a habit of making lines that don't rhyme rhyme, such as "feel" and "fantasy", by pronouncing them "fee-uhl" and "fantasy-uh". Other than that, which I've grown to accept, if not like, in songs, I would still say this song is good. In fact, maybe it is...so good?
#79: "Birthday Cake" by Rihanna feat. Chris Brown
Yay. The number one song on Todd in the Shadows's Top 10 Worst Hit Songs of 2012.
Wow, that is some bad music. It's like this buzzing sound in the background the entire time. The sound starts off lower pitched, but is higher pitched once the singing starts. As for the singing, I've heard better Rihanna performances. Here, she just seems to be phoning it in. Chris Brown is even worse than normal, which is saying something.
The lyrics...this is a song about sex. She is the birthday cake, and she wants him to lick off the icing.
I've never actually been stunned by how bad a song is. Sure, I've had songs that were absolutely terrible, but this song goes beyond that. It is horrific. The music is annoying, the lyrics are completely repetitive (she says he wants to put his name on it at least 4 times a verse). Ignoring the lyrics, though, the singing is bad. Both people know how to sing, at least mostly, but they sound about as good as Ke$ha here. Every song I've done, I could at least find one thing that the song did right. I can't here. This song does nothing right. This isn't just the worst song of 2012 (so far). It is the worst song that I have ever heard. No, I'm not exaggerating.
#78: "Drank In My Cup" by Kirko Bangz
Who? *research* Ah, a rapper. He's been rapping for a while, so he might be good. That name is not a good sign, though.
Music is not too bad, actually. It has this nice keyboard line. As for the rapping...Kirko Bangz is not bad in the sense of flow and rhythm, but the autotuned voice is a bit distracting.
This is a song about picking up a girl, and taking her home. He admits he doesn't need her, but he wants her.
This is not a good song. Like I said, he does know how to rap, and there is nothing wrong with using autotune. The music is also pretty good. Everything is good but the lyrics, which are the most important part of a rap song. I mean, lines like "Fossil pants, I'm hard as a rock"? What am I supposed to say to that? To quote Todd in the Shadows, that's not even a double entendre, or a single entendre. That's a .3 entendre. Still better than Birthday Cake, though.
#77: "Heart Attack" by Trey Songz
I know who he is, but I am not familiar with his work.
That music isn't bad. It's kind of reminiscent of an old-school video game, but does it right, actually having a rhythm rather than being just random bleeps. Unfortunately, the beat soon becomes just a standard R&B beat for the verses. As for the singing, Trey Songz is generic as they come.
The lyrics are a love song, but with a twist. Basically, this is kind of like the modern version of "Love Bites", describing the love as feeling like a heart attack.
I don't know how to feel about this song. The music is good, and his singing is inoffensive. The lyrics are really...odd, though. I don't know if they are good or bad, but the song seems to be almost describing a masochism tango, with a relationship that is ultimately destructive. On top of that, he never really says anything good about the relationship. Like I said, I don't think this song is bad, but I'm not really sure what I do think about it.
#76: "Come Over" by Kenny Chesney
I actually don't mind Kenny Chesney. He can be a bit goofy at times, but he has a charm about him.
Music isn't bad. More piano than usual for country music, but still unmistakeably slow country. As for singing, Kenny Chesney is a bit more deep-voiced and more heartfelt than usual, which isn't bad.
The lyrics are basic love stuff. He is separated from his wife or lover, but he can't stand it, and is calling her to come over, because the bed is cold without her.
This is a pretty damn good song, actually. It's gentle, and Kenny Chesney sounds more genuine here than he did in, say, "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy". On top of that, the lyrics hold up pretty well when expanded. Love is not always a constant happy fluffy time. There will be times where the relationship gets tense. That doesn't mean that the love is not still there, as this song does a good job of showing. I'd give it a listen.
Normally, I'd say this was a mixed bag, with slightly more good than bad. But honestly, "Birthday Cake" killed the list. That song was bad enough to overtake the two good songs. It was not worth listening to that song to hear those two.
