anyone else notice the amount of awesome rpgs we are getting? This gen of consoles has been devoid of great rpgs. Sure there have been a handful from bioware and a couple jrpgs but besides that we've got little worth mentioning.

What's strange is the last gen of consoles was absolutely packed full of amazing rpgs. In fact there PS2 had so any amazing rpgs I probably only played 1/4 of them and still played at least 20. Whatever the reason(which there is many) there isn't nearly as many great rpgs this gen.

In 2012 console players are getting the Witcher 2, Tales of Graces, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Kingdoms of Amalur(this one looks amazing), Mass Effect 3(my favorite series), Ni No Kuni(all star cast like Amalur), and Diablo III(hopefully) it's going to be an awesome year for Rpg fans.

Persona 4: The Golden. Also FFXII-2 isn't really something to be hyped.

One: What El Luck said.

Two: Witcher is a PC port; Masss Effect 3 is not a console-only. Diablo is also a pc port. They're hardly what you can call console rpgs.

I never saw a problem with console RPG's. Oh, and most of those are or will be on the PC, which is where I will most likely play them.

I hear this sort of thing a lot from my fellow fighting game fanatics. The thing is your personal evaluations of games are entirely that. The genres themselves never ran dry and the games themselves have been coming in regularly, many of them being of exceptional quality and awaiting some nostalgic kid ten years hence to make this same thread once again. To which you will reply as I have now in a fantastically Shamalanian twist. Hopefully at this time ten years in the future I will have better things to do with my time than reply here. Like drive my flying car. Fingers crossed people. Fingers crossed.

There just hasn't been as many traditional RPGs. They shifted to shooters instead of sword swingers.

And due to my lack of japanese skills i still think Ni no Kuni should be translated as The Country of Ni. If you don't get why i think that's odd/funny i will pity you.

Well, Final Fantasy and the Tales of series has been here all along and so has the Mass Effect series. Witcher 2 and Diablo III are PC ports.

This gen has been starved of good JRPG's and most of what you listed aren't JRPG's. There has been no shortage of WRPG's.

Hate to be a nit picker, but other then the JRPGs. It looks that all these titles are multi-platform games except Diablo III. And I quite remembered that Blizzard said specifically that they was never was going to port for a quick cash in. Does that mean Diablo will never see the console side, no. Blizzard might retool Diablo for Console optimization, so it doesn't feel like a port as much as possible.

P.S. Can't wait for Tales of Graces.

Didn't realise that console rpgs were dead.
Yeah, I thought they were thriving. Hell, my favorite games are console RPGs, and so are my most hyped games of the year. Am I missing something?

So, what exactly is the point of this thread? Seems like it has little to no discussion value.

I think the OP should change the title to the return of the Japanese RPG (and Japanese gaming as a whole) The western rpgs really are PC RPGs only Mass Effect 3 is a real console RPG imo.

As for japan there really is some great games due out in the next 6 or so months. With that TGS expo lineup anybody who says the quality of Japanese games compared to true western games is just wrong.

Completly agree, it seems as though Final Fantasy has gone the way of Star Wars, which is a shame because the games up to and including 9 were all great (apart from 8 but that wasnt that bad), its gonna get good reviews though because nowadays if a game is mediocre it can still get 10's across the board.
