One: What El Luck said.

Two: Witcher is a PC port; Masss Effect 3 is not a console-only. Diablo is also a pc port. They're hardly what you can call console rpgs.
Also Diablo isn't an RPG, just a loot drop clickfest. Sure I enjoy Titan Quest and Torchlight but they aren't RPGs.

Seems like the OP has a severe case of amnesia, because last time I checked, there were a handful of great RPGs (JRPGs included) for current gen consoles. I don't care what's your point of view in Mass Effect and Fallout, they're still RPGs to me.

But still, I have to agree that 2012 seems like a sexy year in the RPG front.

I think the OP should change the title to the return of the Japanese RPG (and Japanese gaming as a whole) The western rpgs really are PC RPGs only Mass Effect 3 is a real console RPG imo.

As for japan there really is some great games due out in the next 6 or so months. With that TGS expo lineup anybody who says the quality of Japanese games compared to true western games is just wrong.
I don't understand your last sentence. Anyway, JRPG's have been horrible this generation so any JRPG's coming out no longer get an automatic stamp of approval. Remember when Blue Dragon was gonna be great? How about Final Fantasy XIII? Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, etc...
At least three of those were good games. (Blue Dragon was fun, XIII was great, Eternal Sonata was interesting).
Opinions will vary but I think those games sucked. I only finished Final Fantasy XIII and I forced myself to do that. The other two were just too bad to play past the first 10 hours or so. I may have made it to disc 2 on Blue Dragon but not much further than that.

No mention of Skyrim, or for that matter Oblivion/Fallout 3/New Vegas? I am disappoint.
2012
Quote from the OP:

"This gen of consoles has been devoid of great rpgs. Sure there have been a handful from bioware and a couple jrpgs but besides that we've got little worth mentioning."

In the bit about this gen he missed out several of well-known and liked console RPG's which aren't Bioware or JRPG.

Edit: You may want to expand on that post, otherwise you could end up getting hit by the "no low content posts" rule!

I agree that we don't see as MANY quality JRPGs, but the ones we have gotten have been pretty good. FFXIII was great, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, Valkyria Chronicles,White Knight Chronicles I and II, Disgaea 3 and 4, Star Ocean 4... Can't wait for XIII-2 and Ni No Kuni, though. I'm going to be swimming in great games next year.
i concur, loved every game you just mentioned. As for myself i would add Ar tonelico Qoga and Atelier Rorona it's a great games!

Console RPG's aren't dead OP, you just said they are for the sake of having an attention grabbing thread title.

Also, Namco Bandai hasn't said shit about Tales of Graces F in months, so kindly never speak about that game again until there is some fresh news, because as far as myself and a good number of other Tales fans are concerned, there's no guarantee it's coming stateside.

Well, Final Fantasy and the Tales of series has been here all along and so has the Mass Effect series. Witcher 2 and Diablo III are PC ports.

This gen has been starved of good JRPG's and most of what you listed aren't JRPG's. There has been no shortage of WRPG's.
SCUSE ME WHILE I'M OVER HERE ENJOYING RUNE FACTORY 3, PERSONA 3 PORTABLE, ETRIAN ODYSSEY 3, RADIANT HISTORIA, CLADUN, POKEMON BLACK AND WHITE AND SO MANY OTHER JRPG'S I CAN'T NAME OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.

EDIT: I also forgot about Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, which I 'highly' enjoyed.

Yeah, I won't argue with you over that. :) Still, I liked all of those games (Eternal Sonata not nearly as much, but I still played through it. XIII I loved, Blue Dragon I mostly enjoyed except for the iffy story)
The more and more I think about Blue Dragon. I hate the anime style graphics, "I won't give up!", fighting shit (I just find it sick), the heavy metal boss music, the Nothings you find all over the place, that annoying Moogle looking character.

Lost Odyssey was a much better game and they didn't have any of that stuff in Lost Odyssey.

I wasn't talking about handhelds. Don't type in all caps, next time I'll ignore your post.

See now, I'm a Dragon Quest fan, so Toriyama's art style didn't bug me. I love Sakaguchi's works in general, too, although I agree that Lost Odyssey was much better.
I am going through changes though, I just recently started playing FPS games because I just got tired of RPG's, JRPG's in particular. I am tired of the overused anime style used in many JRPG's and I am just tired of all the downtime (stop and talk/watch a cutscene). I have been playing them for over 20 years, I am need of a change so maybe it's me,not the games.

Oh my god, the all caps was 'half' of the post, quit acting all high and mighty like you're some kind of internet celebrity deserving of some respect from a complete stranger.

You made the comment 'this gen has been starved of good JRPG's' and I'm sorry, but I'm not just letting you write off all those games just because they're portables. That's completely unfair. I just listed roughly 5/6 games and you say 'they don't count' JUST because it was on a PORTABLE console?

If anything that makes it more prominent than ever that the JRPG market is doing just fine. Just because I don't have to sit down at a TV to play the game doesn't make it non-existent from this generation.

I try to be respectful to everyone on here even though I don't know any of these people personally. It's called being polite while typing in all caps is considered screaming and that is rude.

Anyway. I will agree that the best JRPG's were on handhelds but I haven't played most of the ones you listed. I did play Pokemon White for a few hours, it just didn't do it for me. You know what was awesome though, Crisis Core. I also played Kingdom Heart Birth by Sleep, very enjoyable but I haven't beaten it yet.

Thing is the best JRPG's on handhelds were ports. Final Fantasy IV on the DS was great as was Chrono Trigger DS, Lunar Silver Star Harmony was fine except for the altered lyrics.

Yeah though, consoles have been pretty sad this gen compared to the 3 generations before.
