There are certain Christian sects that are waiting for this exact event to happen. Also I read a quote saying that if you say something long enough and loud enough, people will believe it (e.g. "the world will end in the year 2012"). Also, these people saw the end of the world (and dated it pretty precisely), but could not foresee their own culture's destruction by the Europeans? Doesn't seem too credible if you ask me.

The really funny thing is, they never did. That date in 2012, whatever it is, is just the date that the calendar they designed ends. They probably never expected the world to end on that date; they either thought (correctly) that their society wouldn't be around that long, or that they would just start a new calendar on that date and have a big arbitrary party.

It's weird how "end of the defined calendar" got twisted into "end of the world by some unspecified means"...I don't know how that happened. The whole thing makes about as much sense as thinking (pre-2000) that the Earth would explode because of the Y2K bug.

Y2K wasn't some fabrication, it was a computer bug that could have been very distructive, espically in old banking systems ( my uncle made a fortune fixing those). It was addressed and fixed. If it would have been ignored very bad things would have happened to your money.

2012 is not going to be the end of the world because the Mayans didn't predict that would be the end, that just developed by some paranoid and misinformed idiots trying to make some money and reputation from it. december 21, 2012 is the day that the mayan calender changes and we go from the 12th age to the 13th, there is no end of the world. However, the mayans believe that when a new age arrives some drastic change happens in society and they may have actually been onto something.

The Mayans did manage to predict something special happening with their impressive calenders. They managed to predict the precise date that our planet crosses onto the horizontal plane of our galaxy. The last time this happened was around 26,000 years ago... around the same time the first major civilisations showed up. There's no way of telling what will happen, most probably nothing, but it's still incredible that they managed to predict a truely rare astrogical event occuring.

The Mayan deep space observatory complimented the Mayan optical and high EM spectrum satellites so well. Who knows what they learned with that kind of equipment? I mean the Mayan radio telescope alone gave them a 1000 year leg up on us Western devils.

In seriousness though, they where slightly more then cavemen. They had gotten agriculture and where working towards discovering Iron. Their only notable achievement is getting pretty OK results from absolutely terrible theories and equipment. Your statement is beyond ridiculous.

Eh? I didn't say that, and I don't think anyone else did, either...I just meant that assuming the end of a calendar must be the end of the world is similar to assuming the Y2K bug would end the world, instead of just messing up some computer systems. Y2K was a real problem which was, like most other real problems, wildly exaggerated (some are wildly ignored).

The 2012 thing is the most extreme example of wild exaggeration I know of: something that would only be a problem if the Mayans still existed somehow turning into the apocalypse.

What I find amusing about these apocalyptic scenarios claiming our world with come to an end on a specific date is it would appear as if they expect something to be done in order to prevent this previously unforeseen doom. If the world truly were to end by it by mass disease or demonic invasion; there is not at all a thing we could do to cease it from happening.

Of course the merely contemplation is laughable; I suppose to be safe we might want to avoid new virus/cure studies during December of 2012 otherwise Zombie apocalypse!

well the maya had some pretty precise shit for the instuments they used. just because a soceity is primitive in some ways doesnt mean they are inferior in every way, they probably had some good shit going on. a few centuries later we have exceed NEARLY all of it, but holy crap.
