2014 could be the 2nd crappiest year in gaming

There are plenty of expected good things coming out this year to balance out the crappy indie games. Also it would take quite a lot to be a worse year than 2012.

Say what you want about Guise of the Wolf, I'm happily enjoying my 2014 releases right now. (Yes, I know IE has been out in Japan for years, but it still counts)

Probably the year that E.T. made the entire gaming industry crash like a drunk teenager off a cliff.
Yes, the crappiest was 1983.

Okay guys I get it, I shouldn't let a couple of bad games dictate the outcome of this year. I just also have this bad feeling for some unknown reason that we're gonna get a aliens:colonial marines or two this year I don't know why. Maybe I should be more optimistic.
Hey, man, depending on how you ask, thinking the games industry will crash again /is/ optimistic. Lord knows we could stand to get rid of some of the bigger players and their awful business practices.

Even if you disagree with that, though, I can't think of anything short of another industry crash that would actually qualify 2014 for the second worst year in gaming history. The market's just too big and diversified for us to ever really have a year without a ton of good releases. Even if by some anti-miracle every AAA game manages to be mediocre at best, there's so many indie devs out there that by sheer numbers, something's bound to kick ass. And thanks to kickstarter, that part of the market isn't even limited to two guys in a basement with a budget of two pounds of coffee and a case of ramen anymore, we're starting to get mid budget games that are still technically "indie."

Not really. Like movies, a lot of the crap comes out straight after Christmas and into February. Wait till March onwards at least.

Guise Of the Wolf,Rekoil, and now Rambo; And it's only February! It's not looking good so far and all there needs to be is for a highly anticipated game this year to come out and suck a rhinoceros taint and this will be one of the worst years for gaming in recent memory IMO.

IDK about anyone else, but im going to wait to say whether its going to be a bad year or not until actual new games start coming out, rather than form my opinion on the shit that is pushed out at the tail end of the past year.

You do realise the good games come out in March, November and December? With an occasional summer release around June or July. You can't judge a year by its first months.

We'll get a lot of Telltale stuff (Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, maybe even Game of Thrones and Tales of the Borderlands, dunno the release dates for those), Dark Souls 2 (hell yes!) in 2 weeks, Watch Dogs (got a feeling it's gonna be one of the better games in a while, or at least one of my favourites) and a number of others. I think it's also a certainty that we'll get GTA V on PC this year, personally waiting for that one (got a PS3, but not playing a shooting game on a console if I have the choice...).

This year really seems bleak, even more so for PC gamers, or at least myself. I was considering replacing my old piece of junk, but then i realised that there is no reason to, maybe if Witcher 3 doesn't work properly and Dragon age turns out decent this time. Then theres dark souls 2 if it's ported properly this time. After checking the releases it doesn't seem all that bad, there are a lot of potentially good games, but then again that site had half-life 3 listed for 2014 for some reason.

Considering the last couple years, my favorite games have been those I haven't played or wasn't anticipating until far into the year, I will not rule out this year quite yet.

Come back in October and tell us how it went for you...

I prefer to judge a year by the number and quality of its good releases, rather than by the number of the bad. Nobody will remember and few will even play the incredibly bad. The good is what people really remember. If there was little good, then it will be a crap year. And looking at the releases on the horizon (Titanfall, Dark Souls 2, and Metal Gear Solid V all coming out next month? Yes please), this year is shaping up to be just fine. :D

That wasn't just E.T. that caused the crash; just a lot of games of the same caliber as E.T. flooding the market.
E.T. is only remembered as the lynchpin, but it was really just the last straw.

There are always plenty shitty games, on the upside though we have games like the Witcher III , Star Citizen , Watchdogs and many more coming out.

Also the second worst year of gaming, really? I think you should look into such events as The video game crash of 1983, and the years surrounding it before making that judgement, gaming continues to grow even in spite of all the shit that companies like EA try.

Most years are pretty crappy at this point. Looking at the upcoming releases though if even half of the high profile titles live up to most of the hype this could be one of the best years in gaming.

Why does everyone forget tom clancys the division or has it been cancelled or something? Man, I want that game.
I agree others sentiments on here, you don't judge a year by the crap but by the lack of good.
The Division is set to come out next year, but yeah it looks like it could be awesome.

I was just about to post that. A good 8 of those games are on my favourites list, with about three other kickstarters all being supposedly released this year (The Mandatae, Pillars of Eternity, Shroud of the Avatar).
As far as kickstarter goes: I'm waiting for my copy of Elite: Dangerous. I missed all the big RPG kickstarters, so I'm going to have to buy those after release. ;)

But yeah there's lots of indications that this is going to be an awesome year in gaming.

The Division, Watch Dogs, Mad Max, Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, Transistor, Deus Ex Universe, Dying Light, Metal Gear Soldid 5, Thief, Scivelation, Titanfall, Wrack, The Witcher 3, Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, Dead State, Divinity: Original Sin, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dark Souls 2, The Age of Decadence, The Stick of Truth, and many more!
while this definitely comprises alot of the games I'm looking forward to, I'm sure there are even tons more across all the consoles, if anything this year we will have lots of different games, if you look back at all the posts in here, many of them don't list the same games they are excited about, which to me is great, shows lots of diversity in the dev field in terms of audience!

My opinion is the same as the majority of this thread, I just felt I should add:

None of the games you've listed have been even half as bad as "Ride to Hell: Retribution", yet the presence of that game didn't stop 2013 from being a damn fine year for gaming.

comparing it to the year the industry crashed feels a tad hyperbolic.

South Park next week looks pretty amazing as a fan of the series and an RPG player. I feel like I am sort of the target audience and I am pumped.

Titanfall is ending my 9 year boycott of EA, and that takes a lot to do, so it is already a good year.

And then there's Star Citizen's various alpha and beta stages which alone makes this one of the best years ever to be a living gamer.

I see everyone has driven the point home enough.

That being said, the games mentioned weren't even big games to begin with. The only reason anyone has heard of them was because of how bad they were.

What really makes a year bad is either when a good game that was hyped ends up bad, or when there were no good games in the first place.

Some small indie games that no one heard of before are not going to bring down an entire industry for a year.

Its the second month of the year. Chill out dude. Even next month will have pretty much something for everyone. Crappy games have always existed. Rambo, Rekoil and Guise Of The Wolf were all from small scale dev teams that nobody had really heard of. Is that really all it takes for you to think this will best the second crappiest year in gaming? Do you decide its not worth going to the grocery store if you fall over on the way out the door?
