CJ has that ludobabbative pissonance thing going on. Franklin is just a sociopath consistently.
CJ buried a guy alive in cement for taking shit about his sister. Neither CJ nor Franklin are supposed to be sociopaths. But Rockstar just doesn't know how to write black characters. Even Vic Vance from Vice City Stories didn't make much sense considering his military background.

This is where the narrative and gameplay can be at odds. GTA was originally supposed to be about causing chaos. Then the narratives came around. And the character you play as in between missions behaves a lot different than the character you play during the missions.

GTA 5 is one of those that I adore BECAUSE of the absolute ridiculousity of random activities in the game. You can go to the motorway, and play Frogger. You can break into the military base, and steal tanks and jets. You can fly 747s through the city, and dodge buildings. You can search for peyote, and become an animal.

And if you have it on PC, you can mod the game into complete absurdity.

There is so much stupid stuff to do!

The demolition site mayhem was more like a brainfart from writers' side. The real ludicrous narration-defecation comes into play when you consider that at some point, CJ has probably killed hundreds of people during his adventure, and yet he's still on a leash held by a crooked cop that's threatening him to frame him for murder of a single person.
Still, SA gets really wacky later on, so it didn't feel as disjointed as in serious IV.
