School is Re-named After Link to Erotic Games is Discovered

The mayor of a Japanese town has announced that a school under construction will be re-named after it's been revealed to have the same name as an adult game series

You would think that naming a new elementary school after a region's money-making crop would make sense, but officials in Japan have been left red-faced after they discovered they came up with one that is already held by a series of adult videogames. The school, which is seen here - and is still currently under construction - in the prefecture that happens to be the largest cherry producer in the country, was originally going to be named Sakuranbo Shougakkou ("Cherry Elementary School"). You can probably see how this went somewhere horrible rather quickly.

Until earlier this week, the official name of the school was going to be Higashine Shiritsu Sakuranbo Shougakkou ("Higashine Municipal Cherry Elementary School"), and it turns out there is a <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C5%8Djin_soft>series of Dojin games (which are sort of like fan-fiction versions of games) that happens to be called Shiritsu Sakuranbo Shougakkou.

According to Kotaku, which first broke the story here in the West, "Put the school's name &#12373;&#12367;&#12425;&#12435;&#12412;&#23567;&#23398;&#26657; in Google, and there are links to questionable illustrations of underage children right up there at the top."

School officials were unaware of the games' existence until an anonymous tipster sent in an email. When parents initially expressed concerns, the city's mayor refused to change the institution's name, claiming, "If we change the name, that will justify this adult world all the more."

Now, just a few days later, the mayor has changed his stance and announced that the school's name will be changing before it opens this Spring (which is the start of the Japanese school year). I get why the mayor didn't want to back down to what he believed was a disturbing fringe culture on the Web, but this is probably the best thing he can do in this tough situation. Exactly what the school's new title will be remains to be determined, but it'll probably be a good idea to do a thorough web search on any names that sound good before a final decision is made.

Change the name, but also send a letter to the game company "go fuck yourself" (assuming they don't do that already). That way everybody is happy.

Oh those crazy Japanese. Nothing like that would ever happen over here.

I mean, imagine what my school, Leisure Suit Larry High, would do if it found there were a series of erotic games with the same name.

In this paticular case I honestly don't think they should change the name, especially seeing as the games in question aren't even a professional product but a cult thing. Technically people are going to sexualize anything (rule 34!), and pretty much anything else they could pick could be given a disturbing connotation, or used as the title of a location in a fan-made work or whatever.

Truthfully, the worst your liable to see here is some people making jokes about it. I don't think keeping the name would either endorse, or encourage anything. Changing it might encourage people to intentionally start producing things to see how they can get public works to react given the precedent. "Really, that's the name? Well I'll use that in my fanboy porno and then make sure the town mayor's office gets a copy anonymously. It will be funny if I can get them to change it, and have my stuff mentioned in the papers".

Of course like anything, opinions vary, I tend to think keeping the name would be the lesser of evils in this case.

Changing the name was the right thing to do. Otherwise you could guarantee that this school would have been forever grafted to this creepy subculture.

Crap, I just put that Japanese phrase into Google. Now there's the sound of tires screeching outside. Hang on, someone's knocking on my door.

Sounds like Mole Station Nursery in Australia, that made a similar mistake with its web address.

It's now http://www.molerivernursery.com/, instead of it's original title, which I'm sure you can work out.

While I'm too lazy to actually google up the thing, I'll just assume that the name of the school was loosely translated as "Violent demonic tentacle rape of underage girls", and that when eventually someone caught on to it, they decided to remove the words "violent" and "demonic", while still undecided about "underaged"...

Knowing Japan, the mayor's objection is probably that the name needs to be changed to something with *more* questionable sexual content. No soft stuff in HIS city!

What a crazy thought my good sir!

Is it wrong that I am more shocked about a japanese school not wanting the link to said material?

Back in the 90's Newcastle Polytechnic nearly changed its name to City University of Newcastle upon Tyne (think about the initials) The problem was only pointed out by the printers after they had printed the new stationary.
