Nolan Planning Inception Videogame

The idea to turn Inception into a videogame has been planted in Christopher Nolan's mind.

Aside from an overly-long scene involving floating dudes, Inception is a pretty awesome movie. Director Christopher Nolan hopes to bring some of that awesome to the game industry with a possible videogame adaptation.

Variety reports that Nolan recently announced plans for the videogame at a press conference in Rome that basically also just trumpeted how much money Inception made at the box office so far ($753 million). In his comments, he seemed to let on that this wouldn't be a quick movie-to-game cash-in.

"What we are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can't fit into a feature film," Nolan said. "That's something we've been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years."

So, according to Nolan, the Inception game might not even feature the same characters as the movie as it's just set in the same universe, though it's likely to at least contain references. A "couple of years," if referring to development time, is a pretty good number to spend on making a quality experience. However, it could also refer to Nolan's intention to not even start for a couple of years, which means the game wouldn't be out for a while.

If you thought an Inception card game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102606-Dreaming-Of-An-Inception-Card-Game] sounded cool, just imagine what could be done with a full-fledged electronic version. Inception is rare in that it combines action, espionage, and gunplay with landscapes that could potentially take the form of anything. A Nolan-backed game set in the movie's universe is an intriguing possibility, and who knows, maybe it'll even take place in our own minds.

Normally a game would have you move the control stick foreword to run and press a to interact with your surroundings.
But with an inception game i have a feeling its gonna make you go deeper.

I thought there was already a game.

It's minecraft.

I go deeper all the time in that. Surely it must be based off of inception.

Well as long as it's not just a quick cash in. I'm interested in the concept of it but movie games are never that great. On the other hand, it'll be based on the universe of Inception so I'm hopeful.

An Inception game, huh? I can see it now...

Press Y to have sex with subconcious
Press B to ruminate about dead wife
Press A to uncover traumatic events from chidhood
Press X to enter The Matrix.
RT to solve complex mathmatical equations
LT to put on clothes before going to the mall
RB to turn world upside down while a naked John Cleese does jumping jacks on your front porch
LB for "Ground control to Major Tom..."
Up to play Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer
Down to imagine making out with a Doberman Pinscher
Left for Souplex
Right for giant genital monster
LS to know Kung-Fu
RS to Bludgeon Spongebob Squarepants with a CD jewel case

...No, come to think of it; I'm not really sure how that would work.

I'll just tell you how it is explained in the movie, don't know if it would work in practice:

The dudes in the car fall off of a bridge. The drop causes the dreamer's mind in the car to think that there is no gravity, affecting the dream. But since the dude dreaming in the dream never really felt the sudden drop or some shit like that, he didn't turn his dream into gravity free. Or then they were too deep. Or they were just in a dream and dreams don't have to be realistic.

What I had more problems with was the killing yourself shit in the deepest level. You needed a drop at all the other levels, but on the last one it's enough to shoot yourself? And if you die on the earlier levels you actually die. That doesn't make any sense.

Interesting news. I don't know how they'll make a good game out of this, but if they don't rush it, it has the potential of being good. We shall see.

Inception really was overrated. Great ideas, but an extremely mediocre execution in my opinion.

This game would probably be better if it were based on the Inception universe, not on the film itself. Being some random idea thief with his own story opens up many more possibilities than having to play as Leonardo DiCaprio's character and go through the movie.

Let us hope they pull a Spider-man 2 and make the game awesome, because this was one the best movies I have seen recently, and I do not want that memory ruined.

I'm very surprised that they would make a game because it quite a profit at the box office(!)

Seriously though, this is just to milk more out of the name if it's going to have little resemblance to the film, they could just call it some guy

I think the point was taking the leap of faith. It's not that killing yourself in limbo would wake you up. It's believing that it would wake you up.

To which, why wouldn't it work on earlier levels. To which, I reply: because Dom told them it would send them to limbo.

On topic though, I have to say I'm cautiously optimistic.

Awesome idea. Hope this hits shelves sooner rather than later, but they can take their time as long as they have a good final product.

Well, I was thinking that the concept and world of Inception would actually make a good television series rather than a game. Sure, a game would prove to be the interactive version that could work out well overall, but something where there's more predictable and controllable seems to be more of what a movie director would work on. Need I remind anyone of Cameron's Avatar game? Pretty much was a swing and a miss for a lot of people.

When I read the title, my de facto movie-to-game reaction of rage immediately triggered. However, it sounds like Nolan actually wants to make a good game out of it. Since he's not busy directing the movie the game's about, he can make sure the game is true to the source. Also, it sounds like it'll be at least 2 years before we see the game, so it's not gonna be a quick, sloppy cash-in. I loved Inception to death, so here's hoping this turns out good.

if they really back the development and don't rush it out, it could be awesome

the movie is one of my favorites now
(it's really easy to tell who are the dreamers and who aren't...basically people who think it's overrated are the latter. not saying that as an insult or anything, just an observation)

Hmm well if they're going to actually spend a couple years on it, not shovel it out when the movie's hype is still fresh (a lot of those come out even BEFORE the movie) it might be good.

Also....I haven't actually seen Inception yet, haven't got around to going to the movie theatres in a while now. Got a lot of movies to catch up on.

Sounds excellent, let's hope they don't fail like most of the other movie-to-game.

As long as it doesn't turn as a bad copy of the Matrix games (wich were god awful), I'm good.
It sounds really interesting and it could work as a game, let's just hope the curse of bad films made even worse games doesn't rear it's ugly head.
