Glasses-Free 3D Coming to TV Next Week

Toshiba is unveiling a brand new 3D television next week that will do away with the necessity to wear special glasses.

One of the biggest sticking points for the future of 3D gaming, on consoles anyway, is the requirement that glasses be worn to see the 3D effect. Whether consumers feel the glasses are uncomfortable or just plain nerdy, they seem to have come to a general consensus that it'd be annoying to wear them. Thanks to Toshiba, these glasses may soon become unnecessary.

Toshiba is set to reveal a glasses-free 3D television line on Monday which will do away with eyewear but still allow viewers to get their 3D on. The exact details of Toshiba's technology are not yet known, but it's assumed that it'll use a filtering method previously displayed by other companies.

The glasses-free filtering method had been thought unrealistic for widespread use in television sets due to the fact that it usually forced viewers to sit in one particular spot. Similar to the way the Nintendo 3DS works, a glasses-free 3D screen can provide an effect for viewers by sending a signal to each eye at a particular distance. This works for the 3DS because users are known to be only a particular range of distances from the handheld. The same is not true for television viewers, whom could be anywhere from one foot to thirty meters away.

Toshiba may be incorporating the use of a filtering technology similar to one shown off in Germany this year that increases the number of spots a viewer can be in to 64. This number is assumed to refer to various angles and distances.

It was reported earlier this year by Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun that Toshiba would be putting glasses-free 3D televisions on the market by the end of 2010, including one with a 21-inch screen that would cost a few thousand dollars. The truth of this report may be revealed on Monday.

Please let the fucking 3D thing go already, guys. The 3ds will sell well because it has a good game lineup and looks awesome, not because it has 3D. People aren't not buying 3D tv's because of the glasses, they're not buying it because they're retarded, overpriced, and a stupid gimmick.

Wow, this actually makes me interested in 3D technology again! I should definitely keep my eye on it, assuming it works as promised.

The fuck?

If monday proves this to be true then I will never adopt 3D for at least 4 years. Maybe even 8. Not until I can buy a TV that is 40+ inch (Don't want to downgrade on size), 3D, HD, No glasses that is under NINE THOUSSAAAANNNDD!!

Yes I had to do that.

Calumon: No you didn't, and why do rich guys get access to this other Dimension? It's not fair...

Like i've raged about before 3D with glasses is just a stupid gimmick to squeeze us of more money, hopefully Toshiba can do this right and actually make 3D worth it.

Why do you hate 3D so much?

It's just a part of the future.

Makes it slightly more appealing, but not nearly enough for the huge price tag it's sure to have.

Plus I'm sure any interest I have in 3D (very little) will be gone once I get the 3DS in my hands and slide the 3D effect slider into the "off" position after about 5 minutes of play.

I've never seen anything in 3d since I went to disneyland when I was a kid I wonder if it's any good. Don't tread on innovation, these overpriced gimmicky tvs are paving the way for remarkable new 3d experiences.

Didn't Spielberg promise us this technology like five years ago?

I definitely think this will go along way to making 3D feel less gimmicky, but the whole point of 3D, after the spectacle has worn off, is supposed to be greater immersion. And 64 or not if shifting in my seat makes everything jump from 3D to 2D then back to 3D it's going to toss me right out of the experience every time.

HD tvs weren't gimmicks, they made the picture more detailed and advanced the technology. I'm not saying this doesn't advance the technology, but it advances it in a way that just causes eye strain and makes things cost twice has much. The price may go down, but the uselessness of the technology won't.

Because it's part of the future I hate. The future full of materialistic twats that destroyed the environment and lost all sense of real life socialising because they were too busy with their Facebook and 3D farmville.

Still don't care. I want the 3DS because it has an amazing game lineup, not because of the no-glasses 3D. In fact, I'll be playing it with the 3D turned off.

Either what he said was sarcastic, or he's just really that stupid and easily convinced. Maybe I'm just cynical, actually no, I AM cynical, but the big fuss over 3D just seems really stupid and pointless to me. A bit like motion controls.

I doubt the Government is going to step in this time and force all broadcast into 3D, and force the consumer to upgrade or buy some converter box.

I'm not even a Trekkie but that would be ideal.

This is great news for anyone (like myself) who likes the idea of 3d but not with the glasses. The only thing I'm wondering is if this is all compatible with the existing 3d tech: Will I be able to use my ps3 to play 3d on it or will I need a special Toshiba player.
