Blizzard Has No Clue How StarCraft II Will End

Don't bother asking Blizzard how StarCraft II's story will end, because it doesn't know yet.

Many of us have it in our minds that there is a top-secret room in Blizzard Entertainment's headquarters that houses a microfiche hidden in a floor safe that contains the entire plotline of the StarCraft [http://www.amazon.com/StarCraft-Battle-Chest-Pc/dp/B00001IVRD/ref=pd_sim_vg_3] series. I do, anyway. The truth is that Blizzard is just making it up as it goes.

Well, not quite that loosely, but Blizzard says that it doesn't have a defined path for StarCraft II [http://www.amazon.com/Starcraft-II-Wings-Liberty-Pc/dp/B000ZKA0J6] to take in the two expansions that will follow Wings of Liberty. Next up is Heart of the Swarm, following the Zerg, which, you know, could go here, or there, or somewhere else.

When asked if Blizzard had the story for StarCraft II written out already, Blizzard producer Chris Sigaty said: "Not really, no. Even things we thought we knew, we're making pretty significant changes and still figuring things out." For this reason, don't expect Heart of the Swarm in 2011, because Blizzard still has work to do.

"We will be very hard pressed to bring it out next year," Sigaty added. "I don't have a date, but it's more ambitious, it's bigger than what Reign of Chaos [http://www.amazon.com/WarCraft-III-Expansion-Frozen-Throne-Pc/dp/B00008ODBQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1288150272&sr=8-4] and I don't anticipate it being done in that one year time frame."

Blizzard doesn't even seem to be sure which characters will live and which characters will kick the space bucket. You've got to think that the company at least has a general idea, because an overly large storyline was one reason why we're even seeing a StarCraft II trilogy at all. I still contend that there's something big on that microfiche, and this statement is only to make people stop asking about StarCraft II's second and third parts one million times per day.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true for most game series.

Its funny in a way.

Fans: "Wow, thats a great story, complete with twists and turns... it was fantastic, and can't wait to see what they do next!"

Devs: "Holy shit we got so lucky there. I can't believe that worked. I don't know how we pulled it off, but I doubt we could do that again. Huh, what? Sequel? *expletives*"

I don't totally buy it. I think they have a general idea of where the story will end, just not how it'll get there.

I really don't care how it ends as long as it's not as cookie-cutter scifi as Wings of Liberty was. Seriously, I was expecting much more from Blizz.

It's time for me to bring my extensive psychic powers to bear for the benefit of the gaming community.

Okay, let me see, okay, it's coming into focus... it's getting clearer... I think I see it... alright... I know. May I have silence from the audience please. The future of Starcraft 2 is:

Starcraft 3!

=D

Essentially how the Legacy of Kain series's plot happened. And that wasn't exactly bad.

Good way to test this: Look for signs of terror in a dev team's eyes when you ask "what's next?"

So I guess what you're saying here is that I shouldn't stop the twice-daily emails asking Blizzard how Starcraft 2 is going to end?

This could work very well if they follow a "BattleStar Galactica" model, i.e. knowing what the ending entails and focusing on character development and deciding who survives in the meantime.

It could also explode into an incoherent spitball of random events until the characters all meet each other in heaven and share a good laugh. That is the "Lost" model.

The Microfiche is a lie, the real stories on the USB stick in the safe on the roof behind the cealing fan, but you'll need to sneek into the activision head offices and kill there CEO to get a chance at the loot drop to unlock the safe.

Seriously, doesnt realy suprise me. Wings struck me no to much as bad but as more of seeting a wide frame for the continuing storyline. And for those who say it was crap and boring, as much as im going to get flamed for this please look at any Sci-Fi ever released. The rule of the thumb is that Humans are generaly the most uninteresting characters in any Science fiction experencce that features more than just humans, but humans are easy to connnect too.

So far the only scifi storyline that I know had a set bible was Babylon 5, and that got bent by syndication not being as good a choice as once thought to be. Keeping Starcraft's story fluid and with a fog of war will definitely help keep surprises in store.

Well no doubt. It's practically a given that the Xel'naga are going to come into play eventually, and Blizz stating that they don't enter into 2's storyline pretty makes that an obvious play for another game.

Small chance, otherwise you get a gray drop:

I am inclined to agree with you, getting the Human vegetable faction out of the way first promises more Zerg meat and Protoss potato in my Starcraft experience to come. The humans do have their playing perks but the storyline is putting me to sleep.

For some reason, I can imagine that's how Portal turned out. Not that I think Portal is bad; it's fricking awesome. But seeing as it had very fanfare when it was released (overshadowed by Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 on the Orange box), I can imagine this is exactly when went through Valve's head, up to and including the "Sequel? *expletives*" part.

Well they've still got a couple of years to get it figured out. I'm sure they'll think of something. The starcraft story has always been secondary to the actual game itself. It was a good story, as videogame stories go, but let's face it, it was never a work of art or a literary accomplishment. As long as they come up with a decent ending, it'll do.

Wow.

Now I know I'm not alone to make up stories as they progress.
That... Is good to know.

My guess is that they will try to do the same thing Halo did, which is that they have to find some sort of super weapon in order to defeat their enemy, and prevent the other enemy...

Yeah, it's cliché but it might be the only option they'll have.

How have they not come up with an ending already? If this was BioWare, they would've had five different endings by now.
Bah, Blizzard. Sometimes you let me down.

So it's like writing a tv show, I'm guessing. Once a season/game is over they break for summer then come back and start brainstorming. The problem is that you can only "write as you go" for so long before you hit inconsistencies and roadblocks.

Wonder why Blizz said that they planned a Starcraft trilogy if they have no idea where the story is going...

You mean the same endings we've been seeing for years? I don't think that this is "coming out", more like "taking the old script and changing names".

Not that SCII:WoL had a great ending or anything.
