Am I the only one who kind of wonders what blizzard does all day?
You are a massive employer with a mountain of amazing talent and ... nothing?

The engine is done and I can't imagine they take that great of care with their stories as SC2 had retcons and plot holes coming out the ass and it was told in a slipshod, sloppy fashion that had a narrative so jerky you swear it was being transcribed by a paranoid schizophrenic who would lose track of his thoughts every mission.

Hell, I remember reading posts on a forum years ago of people just taking guesses at where the starcraft story was going to go if we ever got a sequel. These guys wrote stuff in just a few hours that was, in my opinion, better than what went into SC2.

Sounds ok to me...Do you work naritive into the missions or missons into the naritive, it sounds better to me that some mission structure works first and then story second.
But either way I am sure they got a basic structure, and I am sure someone in blizzard knows how it is all going to work.

Fans: "Wow, thats a great story, complete with twists and turns... it was fantastic, and can't wait to see what they do next!"

Devs: "Holy shit we got so lucky there. I can't believe that worked. I don't know how we pulled it off, but I doubt we could do that again. Huh, what? Sequel? *expletives*"
Are you talking about Half-Life? :p

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true for most game series.

Its funny in a way.

I agree, and I think it´s a good thing.
These are games, not books. Having a story set in stone and being forced to conform to it might detract from the actual game, as you are forced to make decision for story´s sake, instead for gameplay.
You can almost always write a pretty decent and fitting story AFTER most of the missions and setpieces are designed or at least WHILE you´re doing it.

I really don't care how it ends as long as it's not as cookie-cutter scifi as Wings of Liberty was. Seriously, I was expecting much more from Blizz.
Yep, they usually like to break their heroes and twist them into a perverted image of themselves. At first I was really disappointed by the story (which largely is due to the missions not giving me a coherent feeling) but then I thought about why Blizzard did this.

Everyone except Raynor always talks of the Queen of Blades, NOT Sarah Kerrigan. With her being human again she's no longer the Queen of Blades and whatever happens in Zeratul's vision is triggered. There's only one way to change the future and that would be Raynor giving Kerrigan back to the Zerg, thus doing what he regretted so much for a second time

Wonder why Blizz said that they planned a Starcraft trilogy if they have no idea where the story is going...
Well, the quote by the Blizz guy makes it look like they at least had an outline, but they're revising it so much that they may no longer know how the story will end.

It's possible that the original plan was indeed ambitious enough to warrant the three games.

Or it might have been bullshit. Though it's likely we'll never know the truth.

Put more time into the story Blizzard, the Campaign wasn't that good.
I kind of agree with you there. Wasn't bad but I was expecting more.

I hope this whole "making it up as it goes along" deal sounds worse than it actually is. Because it sounds pretty bad :-/

They knew how it was going to end, but they got sideswiped by questioners at Blizzcon criticizing the direction the story was taking. They are reevaluating the rest of the story now. They say "We don't know how its going to end" because that's better (for them) than admitting "Our story was going to blow junks, and you guys called it so we're changing it."

lol seeing that we probably wont see the last game in the series for at least another 4 years they have some time to think of an ending.

But if Kotick has anything to say, it'll end with a cliffhanger so they can bring out SC3 a decade later XD

...Are they implying that they had any idea what they were doing when they wrote this campaign? Because it kind of sucks. Some of the missions are fun, but the actual story is drivel.

Dear Blizzard.

Fuck the story, finish the balancing touches on the multiplayer.
Chop chop.
Shut up you. Some of us care about what happens next. Also, check some of the recent stats on win/loss. Once they fix early cheesing, it is pretty well balanced already.

edit: The actual ending wasn't stellar, but I did like the protoss mini-campaign which is what I am looking more forward to with the xelnaga returning and facing them down with my protoss war machines and sending them back where they came!

Pff, I'm sure it's just a well kept secret. Like how the actors and many people on the set of The Empire Strikes back didn't know that Darth Vader was the father, (Supposedly, the script said that Obi-Wan killed Lukes father) to prevent any leaks from ruining the fun of surprise.

Cheesing is not a balance issue.

Because they were "strongly suggested to" and not "ordered" to do it *cough*Kotick*cough*
