Industry Needs Better Stories, Not Better Hardware, Says THQ Boss

The days of consoles vying for technical supremacy are done, says THQ CEO Brian Farrell.

Farrell thinks that a new Xbox or PlayStation is the last thing the videogame industry needs. He'd rather see developers working to make games richer, rather than chasing more photo-realistic graphics or more impressive explosions.

Farrell applauded Microsoft and Sony's attempts to attract an audience beyond that of core gamers with Move and Kinect, saying that it was the right move strategically and that he "loved the concept." He said that the model of subsidized hardware and rising development costs wasn't going to work anymore, and that he couldn't see where the value was for consumers in another generation of consoles.

"Better graphics?" he said. "They're pretty darn good now. Better sound? No. Gameplay? Probably not ... I think those days are over." Rather than improving the technology, he thought that the games themselves would evolve, and start featuring deeper stories, better characters and higher production values.

Farrell might just get his way too, at least for a while, as neither Sony nor Microsoft seems to be in any rush to start the cycle up again. Sony has often stated that it made the PS3 with a ten-year life span in mind, and Microsoft thinks that the 360 has a good few more years in it, too. It seems unlikely that we'll have to wait another five years before a new PlayStation or Xbox comes out, but another two or three seems very feasible.

Gameplay still need work I think.

Story really needs work for the majority of games.

Hardware and Audio is basically were we want it to be.

I'd rather have it all, and I don't think it's all that difficult if you're smart about it.

Although I can get behind most of what he's saying, no matter how high the production value is, no matter how deep the stories or characters are, if a game has broken gameplay it will be terrible.

Gameplay is far from universally good. Still plenty of ways to sink that particular cruiseliner.

Damn. Couldn't really agree more with this. So few games these days hold my attention from start to finish the way they did back in the early part of this decade. Writing definitely needs to improve.

Gameplay still should matter over story, though, I'd say. I've sat through good stories dragged down by some terrible gameplay many times. But I've sat through bad stories for good gameplay many more times.

I can't believe THQ, makers of such story-riffic games as the Tony Hawk series, are advocating better stories in games.

Grey-and-grey morality indeed.

so what is THQ prepared to DO about this seeming necessity of better stories over better graphics?
Well... Metro 2033 for one thing...
and there goes the thread

thanks bro

on a side note, I have noticed something quite lately

I've noticed that Western game industries go more for attitude, graphics and super macho asexualized guys who are so badass their farts wear eyepatches and smoke cigars

while eastern (polish and shit)game industries focuses more on stuff like atmosphere or story, take for example Metro 2033 as he said, or Stalker, hell, even Cryostasis

if only Western gameplay fused with Eastern atmosphere...

Even if every game on the market for the last 10 years where considered good in the gameplay aspect there would still be room for innovation and improvement. I don't want to "play" a 70 hour long movie, I'm looking at you Square Enix. Actually I think games do need better graphics, but they don't need better hardware to do that, just better artists. Photo-realistic does not mean better.

Didn't play it but heard reviews starting from Slanderous to Laudatory. was the story good? something about Nazi-induced apocalyptic Moscow right? come to think of it, i don't think i've played too many THQ games.
