Didn't play it but heard reviews starting from Slanderous to Laudatory. was the story good? something about Nazi-induced apocalyptic Moscow right? come to think of it, i don't think i've played too many THQ games.
Well I loved it, it does an incredibly god job of getting the story across. Of course it isn't completely true to the book and personally I found myself enjoying the game even more after I read the book, but it does an excellent job.

The only thing people really complain about is the gameplay as the gunplay is kind of 'realistic' in that if you shoot someone wearing armor they can often shrug off the bullets.

But I would recommend it to everyone, it's more than a game, it's like an experience!

I could totally be a salesman...

Well, I think that updating the graphics much more is pointless and it can't go on forever - Devs can't make a game that has to sell 30 million copies to make profit (except if they have a monopoly or something). They are fine as the are now (in most games). Plus, a good artistic direction can (but will not definitely) make a game look much better than a game with, for example, sharper textures.

I don't agree with him in the gameplay that much, though.

EDIT: Of course, having them all (better sound, gameplay, stories and graphics) would be nice, but they all drain resources, and I'd rather have resources dropped from f.e. graphics than story.

Well... Metro 2033 for one thing...
Not to mention that the Saint's Row franchise actually has a rather decent story, considering that they could get away with having absolutely nothing.

In my opinion the story of a game and the gameplay of a game are both equally important. If a game has excellent gameplay but a badly written story I will most likely not finish it because of the bad story. If a game has a great story but bad gameplay I may not finish that game either because I will get sick of the gameplay in it.

In my opinion what needs to happen is that developers need to find different ways to tie the story and gameplay into each other.

I never played Saints Row for story though.

I just coated houses in a disgusting brown waste... hell yeah!

As a person, who values story over anything else, I agree. BUT:

If you'll sacrifice graphics for Story, you'll have a game like Pathologic. Story? Good. Climate? Obscure, but that's a good thing in a game like that. Concept? Sweet. But this horrible graphic, awful animations and poor music? Argh. It ruined probably one of the most fun games I ever played.

Nothing stops devs from making a game which has good graphics, fun, immersive gameplay, and a good/great story. Mass Effect 2 or Heavy Rain proves that.

Well.. No wonder this comes from THQ, all the games i've seen from them looks like they were made for ps1 or ps2 anyways.. Nor are they the best to produce games with good stories..

I dunno, I think the stories are pretty amazing and epic these days. What I'd like to see a HUGE focus on, is creating BETTER GAMEPLAY. Lots of games these days have great story and shit gameplay, which ruins it for me. I'll take gameplay over story any day, personally. I can watch TV or a movie for story, but I can't get good gameplay outside of video games for obvious reasons.

I've been saying this since about 2002, though I'll always place gameplay above story.

And I'm still burned over my Xbox's crappy 4 year life cycle.

Haha, too true, i may actually go and try it out. but know this.... if i don't enjoy it.... im gonna hunt you down and ki- ahh who am i kiddin, that never works.

OT: So who else thinks the utopian pinnacle point of the game industry would come when anyone can use professional game creation tools to make decent games (with good, built in, but flexible gameplay) that tell a story that they want to say. i know i have plenty of stories i'd love to tell through games if i had the opportunity.

Actually, yes, it is. Even if there wheren't limits on the processing and graphical powers of the consoles, their are limits on the amount of time and brains you can get for your money. In short, you can have graphics, gameplay, and story, but you'll have to take as long as Duke Nuke'm Forever and/or Half Life 2, and it'll make it so you -must- sell lots to make a profit... so the story/setting/genre types get limited down to whatever publishers think is hot this month.

Nope, we still have ways to go with technology. Take a FF13 cutscene. Once we can be actually controlling scenes like that, then we've reached it. I mean...I don't want them to be cutscenes anymore where cool stuff happens...cool stuff of that calibre should be made available in the gameplay.

And yeah...better, deeper stories too.

I just got Metro 2033 from steam and I think it's really, really pretty. They didn't cut any corners with the graphics nor the story, if you ask me.

I would recommend that anyone who enjoyed the game get the book also.

It fleshes out some of the obscure areas, adds a backstory to Artyom and though they follow different paths (the book is amazing but definitely could not be exactly translated into a game without changes) it's an amazing story and just helps you enjoy the game that much more.

I would like to see a more balanced approach to game design. To me, the majority of current gen games tend to place an emphasis on graphics, followed by gameplay, then music and effects with story being a distant last. Sure the game looks great and plays and sounds fine, but when it gets down to why the protagonists are doing what they are, all we are basically getting is "because, shut up".

Mind you, this applies less to shooters than it does to say, RPG's or Adventure games, at least in my opinion.
