Hunt Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolf-Man in New MMO

An upcoming MMO will feature classic movie monsters you always thought were hiding under the bed.

Forget Deathwing [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104461-WoW-Cataclysm-Cinematic-Intro-Blows-Everything-Up-Forever], the most terrifying boss to ever reside in an MMO is soon going to be the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Universal Studios and and SEE Virtual Worlds have struck a deal that will bring classic movie horrors like Dracula and Frankenstein's monster to a planet in the Entropia Universe.

If this sounds familiar, it should, because a similar deal was recently announced to give Michael Jackson his own MMO planet [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103654-Michael-Jackson-Gets-an-MMO]. SEE is now responsible for the online representations of both the King of Pop and the most famous set of monsters in history. The first Universal Monsters film was released in the early 1900s.

Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the Universal Monsters MMO, and it was confirmed to IGN that the official announcement is coming tomorrow. The MMO will apparently cast players in the role of a Van Helsing type character, who is known as a vampire hunter but in recent times has expanded his business to include other terrors.

The Entropia Universe is primarily monetized through a free-to-play, real currency system and consists of various portals including Planet Calypso. The Universal Monsters MMO will likely feature Universal Studios franchises such as the Wolf-Man, the Mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Phantom of the Opera. As you can tell, there is no shortage of Universal Monsters to choose from.

We'll have to wait for official gameplay details, but it could be interesting to go up against the actual foes that terrified many of us in our childhoods. Whether or not they'll be bosses is unknown, but I really hope so. The thing is, the Universal Monsters MMO seems like it'll have to do something really special with its licenses, because we've basically already been fighting variations of these monsters in other MMOs for ages. To put a stake through the heart of the actual Dracula though? That'd feel pretty sweet

I never understood the appeal of those old Universal monsters. Maybe I'm too young or something. But they're just not scary or even interesting at all. I mean, the Wolfman is just ridiculous looking, honestly.

Depending on how this is done, it could turn out really well. Could you imagine teaming up with friends, loading your silver bullets to kill THE Wolfman? =) Or getting your pitchforks ready to stab at the Monster of Frankenstein?

Donning your crosses and garlic to take out Dracula? =P haha

It COULD be cool... but I wouldn't want it as an MMO, more like.. a "Monster Hunter" game XD up to 4 friends or whatever.

Mmm. Leaving aside that most of the MMO audience wouldn't know Lon Chaney Jr if he bit them on the leg, does anyone really want to tank Dracula with a 12-year-old screaming 'l2p, noob' down the headset?

That, and you've got a scattering of monsters spread over very different locales and time periods. Black Lagoon is 50s America, Dracula and the Monster are basically gaslight London/Transylvania, Invisible Man is England (good luck with *that* boss fight), Phantom is Paris based while the Mummy could be anywhere from Cairo to the USA. How will they resolve it all? Have it happen in Fictionesia?

This seems almost too good to be true, I'm going to go lounge about inside the Cynical Dome for the time being.

I wish this wasn't destined to fail!

It would be so easy to imagine a (probably steampunked) late victorian era Europe where you get to travel around killing the preeminent monsters! Perfect because projectile weapons were on the cusp of dominance, but not quite there, you could go all League of Extraordinary Gentlemen style on it (read as Fuck Van Helsing)!

Dracula's castle would make a fucking awesome raid... it could be totally gothic and creepy.

Or having an instanced version of the Canada Water docks where you have to track down and kill the invisible man.

Its a shame this game will suck, because in my mind it could be amazing!

A Stephen King MMO would be better, ha ha. "Dark Tower" the MMO? Who wouldn't play that?

well he's the scientists ''son'' right.
so he shares his last name.

He would still be referred to as The Monster.

The monster of Frankenstein is still Frankenstein even if not referred in that way.
(but I get your point)

No, it isn't still Frankenstein. If that were the case you would refer to Alucard, Dracula's son, as "Tepes". As the last of name his father is Tepes as well.

But you don't. Instead you refer to him as Alucard. So referring to The Monster of Frankenstein as Frankenstein is twisting that logic.
