Demon's Souls 2 Not in the Cards

Sony and From Software don't plan on developing Demon's Souls 2 right now, so what does that mean for Project Dark?

From Software and Sony revealed some sad news this week for action-RPG fans. Reportedly, the companies have no plans to develop Demon's Souls 2 and any chance of a sequel to 2009's sleeper hit is still up in the air. However, that doesn't mean we won't be getting more of the first title's impossibly good gameplay.

From Software director Hidetaka Miyazaki and Sony of Japan's Takeshi Kajii recently revealed in an interview with the Guardian that despite the made big profits [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99980-Demons-Souls-Sales-Triple-Expectations] for Atlus USA, the studio still isn't working on Demon's Souls 2. When asked if there would be a sequel, Kajii said: "At the moment, my answer is 'no sequel!'" Did he really have to put an exclamation point on it?

Kajii continued: "However, we have been encouraged by all the players, and this title is so well supported, and besides we like this title so much... Well, this is my own feeling, but I think one day we could bring you another Demon's Souls." Either Kajii is being coy or there's an issue at hand in regards to creating a sequel. Could it be the fact that From Software has already announced a game called Project Dark that looks exactly like Demon's Souls?

I mean, seriously, look at this early footage [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103600-Demons-Souls-Makes-Brutalizing-Return-as-Project-Dark] of Project Dark shown at the Tokyo Game Show. It's the exact same game, no? From what we can see, Project Dark replicates the same art style, dark fantasy setting, and combat.

Project Dark is known to be a multiplatform title releasing worldwide in 2011, so the real problem could be that From wanted to double the success of future Demon's Souls titles by bringing them to the Xbox 360 in addition to the PlayStation 3, but wasn't able due to the game's ties to Sony. Considering that Miyazaki deferred the question about Demon's Souls 2 to Kajii, saying "I will let Mr Kaiji answer that question," From Software may not be involved with an official sequel at all, but that's pure speculation.

Demon's Souls is a good game, it's one of those games I wound up putting little time on with my own copies (both US and Japanese versions... I own two) though.

I think the right attitude is being taken with this though, a direct sequel would be a bad idea. "Demon's Souls" is not franchise material, as it told a fairly strong stand-alone story that came to a fitting conclusion. Anything they could do with something this epic would wind up cheapening it.

This is not to say that I don't thnk they shouldn't make similar kinds of games, rather I think going with a "Project Dark" type game with a nearly identical play style and curve is a good idea, and the plotline can be designed in such a way to work better with a franchise in mind.

I see it as being like "Silent Hill", there was nothing wrong with that style of gameplay or that general kind of setting, but when they started trying to turn our tons of sequels they kind of ruined it. Especially seeing as the first game was pretty much self contained, and while the second one did manage to (surprisingly) work well with it, once they got to the third one on I think it kind of showed that it wasn't designed to be a real franchise.

I actually think "The Room" was one of the better survival horror games I've played, but I think it would have been better had they kept it it's own title, rather than trying to tie it into the Silent Hill Franchise.

I know not everyone will agree with that Anaology, but basically I think "Demon's Souls" should be left as a stand alone that launched the genere, and that if they want to launch a franchise they should do it from the ground up with that in mind. Attaching the "Demon's Souls" name isn't going to accomplish much good.

It's not for everyone, but it's not nearly as difficult as the marketing has made it out to be. So long as you're patient, don't mind the occasional grinding, and are wise with the risk-v-reward system, it should be great for you.

I really do hope that there will be some sort of a sequel to Demon's Souls, if not a direct one than certainly a spin-off with similar gamestyle. Demon's Souls had great atmosphere, challenging gameplay (not difficult, challenging), and I really was intensely immersed in the world. Definitely one of my top favorite games so far.

I don't care if it's called "Demon's Souls 2" or not. I don't even care if it's not directly related or even in the same "world", I just want another one. Project Dark (which is still being developed right?) looks to be, for all intents and purposes, Demon's Souls 2 and that's what I care about.

Don't listen to those nay-sayers, they don't know what they're talking about. I finished Demon's Souls without grinding. The only reason to bother with grinding is if you want to pick up all the Trophies. Also, as s69-5 said the servers are guaranteed to be open until next year, though realistically they will probably be open for a few years after that even.

I really hope you don't get turned away from the difficulty of this game. It made me so angry at first, because I kept dying and losing everything, but as you progress and figure out how to kill more effeciently, it is pretty fun. Extremely tedious though. If I may, I recommend watching Yahtzee's review of the game before you play, as it will add some fun to it as you realize all the things he's talking about. If I had to one thing about this game It'd be 'hella farming', that's the only way I leveled up at all to be able to take on certain enemies. It sucks that we can't get a Demon's Souls 2 in the near future, but maybe they'll do it some other time.

Yeah, why make a sequel to a game that sells well in the US when you can just pump out 20 more Armored Core titles instead? Great thinking. Can't wait to not buy another game involving grey and brown customizable mechs.

Yes. Because in Japan it is law, it is not what you say, its how loud you shout it that is important!!!

As for no sequel currently in the works, Personally I am ok with that. Please by all means focus on Project Dark, make it just as good if not better than Demon souls and give the choice of the platform to be used.

It also sets up even more anticipation for the actual sequel to the game when it DOES come out. Given that Atlus is touting it as "their biggest game in their 20 year history" per their halloween event patch notes I think its a safe bet that it will eventually occur.

Why did we as game consumers come to expect a sequel to come out on either a one or two year development cycle anyway?

EDIT:OT/

Seriously, even if this IS true, why would that even be a factor in deciding to play this game? Demons souls is the absolute finest example of how multiplayer NEEDs to exist in games, as a secondary effect that does not act as a crutch for a game to lean on.

Using Faith or Magic as a base?
For Faith, Istarelle should be a good choice.
Get Pure White World Tendency in 5-1. Just before the first Giant Goblin, you should see a ladder on the cliff to the left, halfway across the bridge. Istarelle is above, and guarded by multiple large Goblins. Be careful!

If using Magic as base, Crescent weapons (Darkmoonstone) or Moon (Moonlightstone) are effective. Crescent ones will regen your MP slowly though.

Pure Moonlightsone from Crystal Lizards in 3-3. Pure Black World Tendency will increase odds of the drop.
Pure Darkmoonstone from Crystal Lizards in 4-3 (Boss Area). Easiest to get of you beat the flying enemies first. Pure Black World Tendency will increase odds of the drop.

On one of my Mage playthrough I had a Crescent Falchion +5 which served me well through New Game+++. Helped that my magic stat was around 80.

Also, if you are a Faith build with high Strength, you can wield the Large Sword of Moonlight (my Priest used it into NG+). It's completely unblockable and blocks magic damage at 80% (which is second best in the game, but doesn't reduce your magic power like Dark Silver Shield does)! It has no physical properties so, someone with high defense, but low magic defense is extremely vulnerable to your attacks.

OP: I want a sequel or spiritual successor. Just give me more!
You don't need spoiler tags. I'm not playing for the plot...

I said SpellSpear. What are some general Spear requirements in stats? Strength/Dex?

I'm planning on using either Magic/Faith, depending on available spells. I've only seen 3 spells, and 1 miracle. I just did the tutorial with every class yesterday to get a "feel" for their basic equipment.

Wait...wait. Are you saying you finally got a PS3?

If you want the real Demon's Souls to start, then use a Wiki. I generally dislike using Wiki's for RPGs because it gives away a lot of the secrets and kills exploration, but DS is so cryptic that it doesn't really matter if you check out the gear/requirements/build suggestions. The game gets great once you fall into an effective build and speed run your way around. Great fun.

Istarelle is spear. Requirements are 9 strength, 18 dexterity and 24 faith.
However, miracles are mostly buff-spells.

If you invest in magic, get winged spear and go with moon- upgrade path. Requirements for winged spear are 13 strength and 12 dexterity.
Moon Winged Spear deals additional magical damage based on your magic stat. If you want to cast spells, be sure to level your intelligence. At 30 you will have 5 magic slots and 200MP, which is plenty.

Even if you go with magic, be sure to level your faith up to 18 and get Talisman of Beast. At this point you have two miracle slots to carry second chance; the best buff in Demon's Souls. Talisman of Beast can cast both, spells and miracles.
