EA: Medal of Honor "Didn't Meet Our Quality Expectations"

An executive from Electronic Arts admitted that the reboot of Medal of Honor wasn't quite up to snuff.

It seems like only yesterday that EA was saying that critics have spoken [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103726-EA-Medal-of-Honor-Will-Overtake-Call-of-Duty], EA is changing its tune. Patrick Soderlund, a VP at EA, admitted that Medal of Honor didn't quite live up to its expectations, but did say that the reviews so far are judging the shooter set in Afghanistan a bit harshly and that he is "proud" of the game.

"The game didn't meet our quality expectations. In order to be successful in that space, we're going to have to have a game that is really, really strong," Soderlund said. "Medal of Honor is to some extent judged harsher than it should be. The game is better than today's reviews are indicating."

When Soderlund was asked what review score he would give to MoH if had to, he balked. "I'm not going to say a specific number. I'm proud of what the game is and proud of what the team did. I just think the market is obviously telling us they think the game is X. We need to convince the market we can make something they appreciate more, particularly to be able to compete."

EA is paying close attention to the consumer and critical response. "We're looking at that clearly. We're taking that seriously. I'm not at all saying Medal of Honor is a failure. It is a successful reboot of that franchise. We're going to be strong in the future."

Soderlund said that the Studio that made the single-player portion of MoH, Danger Close, is working on another game but couldn't hint at what it might be.

So it looks like EA doesn't think that MoH was a home run by any stretch, but they are looking at how to improve any and all future iterations of the series.

How about stop trying to convince us you can make a quality game, and actually make one? If half the effort that went into marketing went into the actual development of this game, it might have been something other than a MUCH less refined MW2 clone. In fact, there could have even been some level of innovation, instead of taking bits and pieces of all the blockbuster FPS games over the past year.

It's a successful reboot of the franchise, huh? So, sequels?

Good enough, I fairly like the new Medal Of Honor.

It's weird that you expected this game to be a blast, but at least it's not a failure.

Just give more money to Crytek to get their funk on.

Let's face it, games lose favour for simply not being CoD, so invest more in something that is noticeably different (and more interesting, I might add).

Good to know that they will be making more.

And i agree it wasn't a failure, just a disappointment.

I'm just glad I didn't buy into the hype train for this game and am patiently waiting for Call of Duty Black Ops instead.

What happens if Black Ops is over hyped just like MW2?

Personally, I think they are just testing the waters for modern shooters in modern conflicts that are actually happening. I think that tends to be a "touchy" subject and maybe they are just trying to see how far they can go. Hopefully the next one will be much better.

I actually enjoyed MW2 and I've enjoyed Treyarch's forays into the Call of Duty Franchise so I think I'm safe.

The more EA talk about MoH the more they sound like the parent of a fat, cross eyed kid who just came last at sports day.

Suggestions:

Please fix the in-game graphics. That was something I could not get over. Sorry for being a graphic elite, but I spent the first ten minutes of the game wondering if I had the system settings wrong.

Make the single player longer. It was too short. Plain and simple. Made even shorter by the fact that we jumped from four different view points in the span of only a few missions. It was jarring. I felt liked I was just getting to know one set of characters when suddenly, I was switched to another set. Quick! Without looking, what's the name of the fourth guy on Deuce's team? Deuce, Dusty, Panther, and...? Did he even have any lines in the game? Play Frontline (if you got the PS3 version), and then compare that length to Medal of Honor's length.

Things to keep:

That sliding into cover move. I was so happy to finally be able to do what A.I. characters have been doing in games for several years now.

Finally, a female pilot that DOESN'T get shot down. (Halo, Modern Warfare, Gears of War, etc...)

The game wasn't bad. It was enjoyable, I think. Not great, but not bad. It was OK. I enjoyed it more than Modern Warfare 2, less than Modern Warfare. It's in the middle. When you make a game thats about, lets face it, modern warfare, people will automatically and shamelessly tie it to Call of Duty, "apparently" because they did it first... *massive cough*

I, for one, am looking to Battlefield 3 for my next FPS, I am not really looking forward to anything else than that and the next TES game =3.

Are you saying Black Ops isn't hyped? In the same way Modern Warfare 2 wasn't hyped? *cough*

I did too but also saw the flaws in the game. I played Too Human as well and enjoyed that greatly because I didn't listen to ANY of the hype there and without the hype it was a great game IMHO.

All I heard where "Don't listen to the reviewers too much, our game is much better than they're saying"

Maybe they should have added more beards.

I think the whole play as the Taliban is has also affected sales. Speaking as someone who knows a fair few people in the army, it doesn't feel right to me as game. I can't go from watching the television ticker every time the name of dead solider is announced wondering if its someone I know, to load up a game with the Taliban in it. Its just too close to home and I don't feel comfortable with it. I know I'm probably in a minority here but I think in the wider world the issue would make maybe a 5% difference in sales. I'm not saying is should be banned or anything but I didn't even think about buying it for that reason.

exactly what I was thinking.

What was that EA; Don't listen to people with similar taste and experience to myself, listen to someone who gains something for persuading me to buy the game?

You silly EA.
