Which JRPG Character Archetype Are You?

If you were in a JRPG, what sort of character would you be?

Every sort of videogame has its archetypal characters, and there's nothing wrong with that. You've got your macho space marines (Vanquish, Gears of War), your unlucky everydudes (Uncharted, Dead Rising) - heck, some studios specialize in that sort of thing [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/6862-Experienced-Points-The-Writers-of-BioWare]. There really isn't anything wrong with having a familiar sort of character; it just makes it easier for the player to relate to them.

JRPGs are certainly no exception to this rule. This week's issue of The Escapist magazine is all about those RPGs from the other side of the Pacific, and we thought this was the perfect opportunity for a personality quiz!

What sort of JRPG character are you? Are you the peppy one, or are you the brooder? Are you the mage, or are you the one swinging a giant sword around? And just how big is your hair anyway?

If you want to find out, why not go ahead and take our JRPG personality quiz [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/quizzes/view/121]? As always, if you don't like your result you can try again for another one.

Grab your hair gel and take the personality quiz here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/quizzes/view/121]!

This error thing seems to be frequent with new quizzes. It happened to me when they first posted the Halloween quiz too.

I am NOT going to enjoy the JRPG bashing in the comments of this weeks' articles.

"JRPGs aren't really RPGs!"

"I played a few Final Fantasies and didn't like them, therefore JRPGs suck!"

And the quiz doesn't work.

I was hoping to be the "naive child mage" stereotype.

Take this quiz [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/quizzes/result/121.111-The+White+Magic+Girl]

Close enough. And it's Elena from Grandia 2, which is a bonus. I'd prefer to think I'm more like Ryudo, though.

Sarcastic douchebag, but a douchebag with a heart of gold.

I don't get the bashing myself. The games are good, if you are into that sort of thing (I am a a bit), so why are they the butt of every joke out there? I think ZP is, to a limited extent, a reason for this - everyone wants to agree with him in case they don't get invited to his birthday party

To be fair, there's as much of a bandwagon for not agreeing with ZP as there is one for agreeing with it. Alot of people tend to be anti ZP just so they dont appear to be in with all the noobs who mindlessly agree with anything yahtzee says.

I think it's more the case of JRPGs coming from an entirely different culture. Western sensibilities are somewhat at odds with the common themes and archetypes many, if not all, JRPGs have: wildly coloured hair, extravagant speeches that make little sense unless one thinks about them in context, blatantly impossible weapons etc.

It's like compairing True Lies with Shi mian mai fu - both have action, and some common elements, but the package is just too different for the average westerner to incorporate in one sitting. And one sitting is sadly all what many are willing to give JRPGs.
