Crysis 2 Producer Believes Series Could Be as Big as Call of Duty

The latest Crysis game lays the groundwork for future success, says executive producer Nathan Camarillo.

Call of Duty is pretty much the biggest fish in the videogame pond right now, and has set the bar pretty high for anyone hoping to follow in its footsteps. But rather than be daunted by CoD's sales success, Camarillo says that he can see no reason why the Crysis series can't be every bit as big .

Camarillo didn't think that it was going to happen over night, but said that Crytek was taking the vital first step on that road, by making sure that Crysis 2 - the first multiplatform Crysis game - came out of the gate strong and grabbed people's interest. He thought that the near-future military setting was an advantage because it was grounded enough for fans of military style shooters, but futuristic enough to grab sci-fi fans as well. He added that the game's nanosuit - which augments the player's strength, speed, and durability, as well as allowing him or her to become invisible for a short period of time - afforded a number of fresh game play options that he was confident people would enjoy.

Camarillo said that Crysis 2 was the start of a "new future" for the Crysis series, and that part of the reason that Crytek was trying so hard with the game was to set up future installments. "We're taking it very seriously. That's all I can really say about it. We wouldn't put this much effort into it if this were where it was ending. That doesn't make sense."

As Camarillo says, there's no reason why Crysis couldn't be as big as Call of Duty, but trying to figure out if it will is much harder. A strong game is important, but there's a lot of other things that go into attaining that level of success. Crytek's approach of trying to build brand awareness and loyalty, and then building on that base in the future seems like a sensible way of realizing that dream however, and it will be interesting to see where the franchise is in ten years time.

Crysis 2 will be released for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on March 22nd in North America, and March 25th in Europe.

Hopefull by "big" he doesn't mean "interested in making shoddy sequels that are incomparable to the original"
But good luck to him, Crysis is one of the most interesting games I've seen recently.
It's move to console may make it seem less... divine (I can say this as a console gamer), but will open the market for them. Will also mean I won't have to spend all my money on a top of the range computer.

Crysis does look a lot better, in more ways than one.
It's PC only right, I have trouble running TF2 so that might not go to well.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with "This." right here.

The first Crysis and its stand-alone expansion, Crysis: Warhead, are both PC only, but Crysis 2 is coming out for Xbox 360 and PS3 as well as PC, as said at the end of the article. :3
It did?
Wow How did I miss that!

CoD is popular because of it's multiplayer. I want Crysis to be popular because of it's single player. And I'm not talking about some 5 hour campaign I'm talking about 20 hour campaign. I loved first Crysis. Despite what people say about graphics, they do matter and Crytek proved that with Crysis. The game was very intense and the superb graphics made that intensity even bigger.

Meh, Crysis was good for two things- abusing Koreans and testing graphics cards.

There are no Koreans in Crysis 2, and you can't use it to test your PC when it's on console.

Is that why the multiplayer looks like MW2 with nano suits? I'm glad I'm not that interested in online games, they are starting to all look the same...

Ditto. Call of Duty is only big because of it's multiplayer and Crytek's watermark are immersive, free-roaming single player experiences whose multiplayer counterparts has been utter shit.

Then of course, Crysis 2 mp is developed by old Timesplitter veterans, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah I wish Crysis was a singleplayer only game. But games today are all about quantity over quality. A lot of people don't want to spend 60$ on a game that's only 10 hours. Just look at games like Dead Space 2 or Assassin's Creed Brotherhood or Portal 2. They don't need multiplayer

The only aspect that's good about Crysis is the graphics, and even that requires a very powerful PC that most people are unwilling to dish their cash on.

I'll be honest with you: I will get Crysis 2, but only to prove that my computer can run it.

Unless they make the game fun, which I doubt EA will.

Ugh.

Yeah... keep telling yourself that mate. Maybe if you wish upon a star it will come true.

Crysis was a turd on a stick. (Albeit a rather pretty stick.) I'm not confident that Crysis 2: Revenge of the Sequel will be any better.

The graphics are the *best* aspect, but not the only good aspect.

And Crysis came out three years ago; it doesn't need a powerful PC. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad, with an nVIDIA 9800 GT graphics card. With that, you can crank it to maximum and it will stay steady until the very last boss battle.

Hey! I thought the Crysis gameplay was fun, and I think it had more lasting appeal to me than the CoD gameplay. It's just that you generate your fun by creative use of the nanosuit instead of getting everything handed to you the same way every time.

Bah, when will they all just accept that it was marketing/advertising that really helped sell Modern Warfare 2 and set it up to go juggernaut...
