Kinect Already Going Big in Resale Market

Consumers are already willing to pay well over the retail price of Kinect just to get their hands on one right now.

Microsoft's current Kinect [http://www.amazon.com/Kinect-Sensor-Adventures-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA298] sales figures haven't been released yet, but the resale market is showing that there's a strong demand for the device. Analysts looking at the resale market for Kinect have found that people are already paying a premium if they can't find it in stores.

Kinect's $150 retail price was a bit higher than expected, but apparently this doesn't matter to many consumers. Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian says: "Our survey of completed transactions on eBay indicates that Microsoft Kinect, the motion sensing controller for the Xbox 360, is selling for an average price of roughly $190, or nearly a 30 percent premium over the retail price of $150."

I had no problem finding the device at a few local stores, but it is currently sold out on various online retailers. This was reflected by the research done by Sebastian, who found that brick-and-mortar retail outlets had the device in stock, while online retailers did not.

Sebastian thinks that that consumers paying extra for Kinect is a good sign for the industry this holiday season. "We believe that early signs of demand for Kinect bode well for the device as a holiday gift item, and if the momentum continues, could provide the industry with a near-term shot in the arm," he said.

The closer we get to the holidays, the bigger Kinect resale prices could go if enough gift-givers decide they need one. The Nintendo Wii was going for a premium in the resale market for years after its release, because it was sold out nearly everywhere for the same amount of time. If Kinect's success replicates the Wii's, Microsoft may have truly connected with the audience it intended to develop the motion gaming extension for. Microsoft predicts that Kinect will sell 5 million [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104981-Microsoft-Nearly-Doubles-Record-Breaking-Kinect-Sales-Forecast] this quarter, so I'll be interested to see what the official sales figures are, if they're released.

So does this mean people are just lazy or are they that stupid that they wouldn't bother checking physical retail stores?

Also what was the Wii going for online after a few days after its release? Like twice the price almost? Little less?

Patience is a virtue. Whats the difference between having a Kinect today and having one tomorrow, when you aren't paying $40 more?

It's a good sign for Microsoft, but the whole resale market has always had a coating of sleaziness to me.

Why are people paying extra, I thought physical stores would be the first place the target audience of kinect would check for them. If there is still stock of them, some people could be making some nice profits.

Anyone wanna bet that 80% of those sales are soccermoms? (you know what I mean ...)
And what, pray tell, is the problem with that? Motion controls are a way to make video games a universal form of media. I mean, there seems to be an article on the Wii in every other Southern Living issue. This could be a real breakthrough when it comes to the acceptance of the other sort of titles available on the 360.

People are selling the Kinect on Amazon for $200-$250. That's just for the device itself. If people are willing to pay such prices for just that device, not sure why they're not just getting a bundle with the new Xbox Slim. Sure, it's just the new 4 GB 'Arcade' edition, but if you're already willing to throw money on to the fire, you're at least getting a second console in the mix.

I'm glad to see MS do well, glad to see the video game industry do well, but movement-oriented games, like 3D games, are not where I want to see things headed. I haven't been to a brick and mortar lately, guess I'll see if I can scoop up a few for resale.

Did anyone else read the title and think it was about people selling on their Kinect second-hand already?

Yeah, but is this actual demand or manufactured demand?

Let me clarify, is this high demand due to consumers actually wanting Kinect, or did Microsoft not make enough systems out of caution or greed, creating a higher demand?

damn, I thought you meant people were returning them and they were being sold used. I really want the Kinect to fail.

If that were the case then, there wouldn't be any in stock at retailers, which even the article said there were. So its more than likely not a manufactured demand. I mean c'mon, it even got the Oprah seal of approval, that's PR GOLD! (in the casual market, which is the intended demographic)

Why is that? Whom do you think is currently the larger consumer of the Kinect? If it really is soccer moms, then Microsoft have succeeded in capturing the interest of a major part of the casual demographic. If it isn't, even better 'cause that would mean they've succeeded in other key demographics as well.
