Minecraft Creator Notch Calls in to LRR's Desert Bus

The creator of independent sensation Minecraft called in and spoke to the Loading Ready Run gang as they play Desert Bus.

If you've ever wanted to watch several Canadians squee on internationally broadcast internet video, then you should have been watching the Desert Bus for Hope Child's Play [http://www.ustream.tv/channel/desert-bus-drivercam#] charity by playing the Sega CD game Desert Bus for as long as people will donate. The whole process is broadcast over the internet and users can join a chat room and ask them to do funny things for a small donation. Today, a recognizable name popped up in the IRC chat and the crafty Paul Saunders had to ask, "Is this the real Notch?" In response, Markus Persson (aka Notch) used his Twitter account to say that it was in fact him. The Loading Ready Run gang then got him to call into the show and asked him all kinds of questions about Minecraft and his plans. Persson also donated $2000 to Desert Bus for Hope, which is just plain awesome.

Persson said that he was a big fan of Loading Ready Run and that he tuned in to watch some of their antic in last year's Desert Bus for Hope marathon session. Talking quietly so as not to wake up his fiancée who was sleeping in the next room (it was the middle of the night in Stockholm, Sweden), Persson let loose a few nuggets about Minecraft. He programmed it in Java because that's the computer language that he knew. A big update is being worked on as we speak, but he is also busy working on a new game.

All in all, it was a cool moment and it drew nearly all of staff in The Escapist office into the room that we have streaming Desert Bus for Hope [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/DesertBusForHope] to watch it unfold. Let that be a lesson to you, you should never stop watching Desert Bus. You never know who is going to call in, just today there's been call-ins Gabe from Penny Arcade, me and [user]Susan Arendt[/user] in addition to Notch.

I'm at work, and have been peeking in whenever I can get the chance (not often). I missed the Gabe one because someone started downloading a huge file and killed our bandwidth, so I heard about 2 words in 20.

Later, I'd just finished beating a huge snafu down involving a bunch of computers that were going out without anyone paying for them because the client was dragging his feet, sat down at my PC... and got to see the last 10 seconds of Notch's phone call.

It's the most boring game ever made. Desert Bus For Hope is a charity event where LRR plays it as long as you force them to. Come on, it's been all over the site for days.

Basically they play desert bus until people stop giving them money, and on the way they take challenges from viewers to do crazy stuff for money, and do live and silent auctions, all to raise money for Child's Play.

This absolutely made my day.

I was watching Desert Bus with my morning coffee and the idea struck me to try and spread some awareness, so I contacted MC Frontalot on Facebook and tried to send a few messages to Notch on Twitter and I guess the same idea occurred to others.

It probably wasn't my tweet this morning within a sea of tweets that was the catalyst and more an internet hive mind thing, so huge word goes to @Axe9 [http://twitter.com/axe9] who is the one that finally made Notch aware of the Desert Bus Event.

The internet can be a truly beautiful thing sometimes.

The look on the LRR Crews face when Notch entered chat and when he agreed to the interview was priceless. With all you guys are doing for Charity its nice that us fans were able to do something for you guys in return. A lot of us were trying to make this happen, and I'm glad someone was able to get the word to where it needed to be.

In the meantime I will keep on working on Front.
