Atlus to Clear Up Confusion Over Catherine With Demo

Catherine will soon be getting a lot less mysterious. Probably.

If there's one word that sums up Atlus' upcoming erotic thriller, Catherine, it's "confusing." This is something that Atlus is aware of, and hopes to address with a demo ahead of the game's release.

Catherine looks all kinds of intriguing, but the strange, disjointed trailers - not to mention the language barrier - don't really help in getting a feel for what the game is about. That's not just limited to Western gamers hopeful that the game might make it out of Japan, however, as speaking the language doesn't seem to help in understanding what's going on.

In a blog post [http://cathy.atlus.co.jp/blog/2010/12/post-18.html] on the game's official site, director Katsura Hashino said that people had voiced a number of concerns to him about the game's content. Some people were concerned that it might be too sexual and that they wouldn't be able to buy it, while others flat out didn't know what the game was about. A recent Famitsu [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106031-Erotic-Thriller-Catherine-Gameplay-Detailed-Remains-Bizarre] article gave some insight into Catherine's gameplay, where protagonist Vincent must climb a huge tower made of blocks in a recurring nightmare, but that is only the action portion of the game, and the adventure portion still remains largely a mystery.

Hashino doesn't say exactly when the demo will come out, but as the game comes out in Japan on February 17th, it will presumably be before then. Of course, whether a demo will actually make things clearer, or just make them confusing in a different way, is anyone's guess.

I haven't played a good game about sexual frustration/confusion since Silent Hill 2.

Bring it on!

Chances are itll either get raped by the censors or just not released outside of japan but still this has me intrigued.

Atlus should spend less time with this sort of thing and more time opening an EU office so more people can play there games around the world instead of just a token few in Asia and the US.

Why are we supposed to care about just another Japanese sex game? There have been like 20 news posts on this damn game and quite frankly its getting annoying.

It's not really a sex-game or masturbation aid, but looks like it's just telling a story that's about sex and eroticism.

This post just shows how many of those "20 news posts" you actually read...

I'd like to play this game in Canada, but knowing the west, it's rehashing of games with sexualized content might butcher the game, I really just wish the M rating was 18+ Like R rated movies so people would not consider games media for kids.

I mean characters in video games always come off disjointed in any series because the sex aspect is always so off. I mean it is a driving force in a lot of things whether you can see it or not, it's like a generalized glazing over of reality with heroism or bravery. You see a guy fighting to get all this money and fame in some generic plot it's not so he can hug the female leads brains out at the credits.

I imagine it playing out a bit like an erotic horror version of psychonauts or somethin, going into dreams and all.

I didn't think it was that confusing. The creators just took a few advanced psych classes and read a book on dream theory and are now making a game. I will be happy if they actually focus on the psychological aspect of it (creators of Persona, I think the chances are good) instead of succumbing to a collection of fan service.

Easy boy, how about you actually read one or two of those articles and then comment on it. Also, sex is a part of the human condition. It will end up being everywhere people have an influence.

Well, there's a girl humping in the trailer, it must be a sex-game. Like Ninja Scroll being porn and some such.
I saw a trailer for a film the other day, and it appeared the film featured a sex scene. It must have been a porn film.

Two on the box art, one for every trailer, artwork, or even slight mentioning of something about this game. Someone on the staff has an unhealthy obsession with this game that looks by no means extraordinary.

The game is anything but ordinary - hence why it's getting so much publicity -_-

Confusing or not, I'm looking forward to Catherine more so than anything else in terms of games.
