Valve Wrote 13,000 Lines of Dialogue for Portal 2

Portal's silent protagonist will have a lot more dialogue to listen to in Portal 2.

One of the reasons gameplay videos [http://www.amazon.com/Portal-2-Pc/dp/B002I0JIQW] didn't convince you, maybe this will: Portal 2 features 13,000 lines of dialogue.

Valve revealed the impressive number to IGN. This jump in the amount of dialogue isn't the result of GlaDOS having her speech chip upgraded, but instead comes from the addition of new "characters" like the player's AI sidekick Wheatley. Anything that can talk in Portal 2 has apparently become more chatty, including turrets, while the co-op mode [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106057-Portal-2-Bots-Built-to-Be-Friends-in-Cute-Teaser] might also have a few lines to say.

For comparison's sake, said [http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Xbox-360/dp/B0045EI7I4/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1295035433&sr=1-4] to include around 80,000 lines. For the sequel to a game that basically had a computer yelling at you from time to time for 5-10 hours, it looks like Portal 2 is receiving quite the upgrade not only in the gameplay department, but in the story department too. This is good news, because the underlying story in Portal, sparse as it may be considered, was just as engaging as its portal hopping.

13,000 lines of dialogue... the voice actors must be cursing Valve right now with their sore throats and broken voices. I'll bet they weren't expecting to do THIS much talking for such a short game!

12,000 lines of said dialogue are turrets making idle banter.

Just a guess but a good shot in the dark no?

I'm still on the line about Portal 2; does anyone think that this game will look past the refreshingly original and quirky gameplay, to create a truly diverse, interesting and most importantly fun experience throughout? I have a horrible feeling that what I loved about Portal was how different it was from other games; is more of the (similar) same thing innovative enough to create an experience as good as Portal did?

That doesn't seem like that much talking compared to other games. Anyways why is the gameplay video give people a headache? There was only one portal jump.

It's not a short game, this one's full length.

Hot damn thats a lot of dialogue. Would you even to be able to hear all the lines?

I'd imagine the game not really being all that long like the first one. And even if the game was longer I'd have to replay the game multiple times just to hear all the lines.

I'm not going to make snap judgements but I think I liked the immediacy of the action of Portal.

Crap, the subtlety of the story was the best thing about it in Portal 1, it told the story through setting and gameplay, not dialogue.

Surprising amount of dialogue if a game like GTA only had 80,000 lines, cool to see Valve do a story based single player game with a talking protagonist this time around.(Sorry if they already have and I'm unaware)
Nobody said anything about a talking protagonist, and it's almost a sure thing that there will not be a talking protagonist.

Of course, they fail to mention most of that is just new ways for Chell "Oh god I really wish that fall had killed me" to grunt or scream when the player fails.

I'm fine with just over 9000 (couldn't resist)

OT: I'm all for more story. I just hope that what made Portal 1 good will still be here and not overshadowed by all the new stuff, or, indeed, forgotten completely as Valve tries to make a titanic "super-game".

Valve is one of those types of companies that can do it. Half-life and Half-life 2 are pretty different. I think it can be done.

Why do I suspect that half of the dialogue will be hidden and only triggered on special occasions? Is my gamer sense tingling?
