Sony Hints at Move for the PC

The word on the street is that the PlayStation Move [http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Move-Starter-Bundle-3/dp/B002I0J4NE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296583188&sr=8-1] motion controller could soon be making its way to the PC.

John McCutchan of Update on PlayStation Move Development [http://us.playstation.com/]." That may not sound like riveting stuff to the non-developer crowd but there's something in the description that does bear notice.

"This talk will bring developers up to speed on developing for the PlayStation Move controller," it says. "We will cover developing for the new PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter accessory. We will discuss the new Move Server project that will make it possible for academics and hobbyists to develop software using the PlayStation Move controller on their own PCs."

Move on the PC? It's an interesting idea and not entirely beyond belief. Open source drivers have already opened the door to occasions [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106467-Researchers-Bring-Kinect-to-World-of-Warcraft]. The PC market for games may have been overshadows by consoles but the PC market itself is huge, and it's not too terribly surprising that Sony doesn't want to leave the Microsoft fox alone in that chicken coop.

McCutchan's talk will take place on the afternoon of March 2, so more details will likely follow shortly thereafter. GDC 2011 runs from February 28 to March 4.

To me, this seems like Sony wanting in on the hundreds of Kinect hacks we've seen popping up. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Sad and pathetic.

Razer's Hydra motion controller would easily replace the need for Sony's ice creams

My thoughts exactly. Only I'm wondering what Sony expects us to do with the Move on the PC. The Kinect has a lot of potential for motion capture for not a lot of money, but what do we do with a motion controller? I don't think there are many Move hacks that can do more than the Wii hacks we already have.

Didnt we have that Sixense thing already? That one that is being pushed forward by Razer, Intel and Valve?

Alright then, there are plenty of Wiimote hacks on the PC, and you can play a number of games with it.

Why you'd want to is beyond me, but still. (Seriously, dildoes < keyboard and mouse.)

I think that's why we haven't seen many Move hacks already. People want to do stuff with the Kinect because it is so different to anything before it, whereas most of the stuff that could be done with the Move has been already done with the Wii.

Still not interested. I never could understand, what's so special about those gimmicks. The industry should put more effort in creating better story imo. I hate how people seem to be more impressed by "shiny" than "intellectually stimulating" when it comes to games

Gaah, maybe I'm just too old.

I basically agree with those saying that this is missing the point.
The Kinect wasn´t hacked because people wanted motion control or play games, it was hacked because it was a genuinely interesting piece of technology (my uni is actually offering a kinect seminar next semester, gonna be interesting).

Cool I guess... I won't be interested since I already have a Wii, and I doubt it will go over well. Most people that play Wii don't have a gaming PC and probably wouldn't drop the money on one for Move for PC.

MEH. Seriously... my PC screen is 24". I sit in front of it, fairly close. I don't have room to be waving my hands around. TV? Great. 40". I can stand back and flail. Of course, I suppose the same can be said of Kinect on PC.

Basically... whoop dee doo! Unless some very, very good application for these two control schemes comes out, you can count me out.

Wait, hack the Kinect and use Move controllers with it?? DOUBLE THE MOTION AWESOMENESS!

If it were worth doing, the hackers would have already done it. Kinect is simply more interesting from a purely technological perspective, though the actual games for it are even stupider than Move's.

Exactly, the Kinect is a cheap 3D spatial sensor with far more applications than being a gimmicky game controller, as we're already beginning to see.

No, Take your silly casual gamer controls somewhere else, We're busy playing GAMES.
Isn't the PC the MOST casual platform? You know, with all those indie, Popcap, flash and what not games.

OT: Good for them I guess. I don't really care, but it won't really get in my way, so no need to bicker.

If only they projected holograms like Move ads would lead us to believe.

But yeah, it seems a rather sad attempt to maintain face with motion controllers.
