Jeri Ryan To Play Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth Web Series

The former Borg confirms that she will appear in a 10-episode web series set in the Mortal Kombat universe.

Remember that awesome Mortal Kombat short film that Twitter feed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101195-Mystery-Mortal-Kombat-Trailer-Will-Blow-You-Away] that she will be reprising her role as Sonya Blade. Ryan is perhaps best known to us nerds as the liberated Borg Seven of Nine serving aboard the USS Voyager in the eponymous Star Trek series.

"Heading to the farmer's market with the hubs & my girl. Then this evening I head to Vancouver to shoot Mortal Kombat! (NOW it's official)," Ryan's Tweet read [http://twitter.com/#!/JeriLRyan/status/34343834640982017].

In case you were wondering how good the web series is going to be, Ryan gave it her seal of approval. "BTW, just finished reading the whole script for Mortal Kombat. Holy crap... I think u might just love it. Get ready..." she wrote after her initial Tweet. [http://twitter.com/#!/JeriLRyan/status/34558051939778561]

Now we just need Michael Jai White to be cast as Captain Jackson "Jax" Briggs and the Mortal Kombat web series will likely be as awesome as the first 8 minutes.

Hate to sound like an ass, but I don't remember her performance as Sonya Blade being particularly noteworthy.

This always seemed like a cool idea, I'm glad it's becoming official, and I'm glad they're choosing Scorpion as a main character instead of Liu Kang. It couldn't come at a better time either, with that promising new reboot to the series coming out soon.
Even to this day, whenever I ask someone to come here, I still say in that enraged Scorpion tone:
"GET OVER HERE!"

I would make a comment about being so excited I soiled by trousers, but one of my New Year's Resolutions is to be more classy, so...

Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod AWESOME.

Michael Jai White was already confirmed, let me see if I can dig up the article.

EDIT: Here's a piece of him saying he would do it if it came up: http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/06/11/mortal-kombat-rebirth-star-michael-jai-white-finally-gets-to-play-jax-after-two-near-misses/

But I guess he isn't confirmed.

Here before someone who (for some reason) hates the 8 minute nerdgasm video posts how this isn't anything like Mortal Kombat.

I can't wait for this. A web series is actually more preferred than a movie.

This. Is. Awesome!!!

MK has decayed a bit over the years, I reckon this is the proverbial hand in the chest it needs to get back on track.

Looking forward to it.

I follow Jeri Ryan on Twitter because she's smart and fun and funny. Spotted the announcement and cheered. Her review having read the whole script was "the fans are going to love this".

My question becomes, what will this being a web series entail? Does it free them to make a project with far more violence and thematic content that is better suited to cable than network? Is it going to be as dark and gritty as the sizzle reel suggests? Is it going to one one of those two bucks an episode deals?

Dunno. But I am all for moving away from broadcast network TV and its over-sanitised bullshit.

Personally I thought she looked a bit...old to be Sonya in MK:R hopefully the wonders of make up fix that in the Web Series.
