Nintendo "Juggling Too Many Balls" to Support Wii Right Now

Nintendo needed a break from the Wii to take care of other important launches, but says more first-party content is coming soon.

If you take a look at Nintendo's list of upcoming first-party games, you'll see White [http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Skyward-Sword-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002BSC54I/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1299679773&sr=1-1].

IGN spoke to Fils-Aime about the Wii in general and how Nintendo is handling the system's decline in sales. Fils-Aime looked on the bright side and pointed out that as a device whose sales peaked in its 3rd year, continued to be strong in its 4th, and that sold more than 7 million units per year for three years putting a total of roughly 35 million consoles in people's living rooms, the Wii is still "doing great."

Fils-Aime indicated that Nintendo would continue to keep the Wii "distinctive" from Microsoft's looking pretty good [http://www.amazon.com/Kinect-Sensor-Adventures-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA298/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1299679804&sr=1-1]. However, one game does not a system make. Does Nintendo have anything else on the horizon for the Wii?

Yes, Fils-Aime says. Nintendo had to prepare for the launch of the 3DS in Japan on February 26 and is still preparing for its late March launches in other regions. In addition, Nintendo was focusing on Pokemon Black & White, which recently hit stores with much fanfare [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108326-U-S-Catches-1-Million-Copies-of-Pokemon-Black-White]. Fils-Aime says that Nintendo has been "juggling two big balls" and to juggle a third with the Wii "would be a little bit challenging."

Fils-Aime added that there is definitely more content coming to the Wii, and Nintendo will be sharing what it'll be in the coming weeks. Some of this content will be revealed before E3, and then at E3 Fils-Aime says Nintendo will be sharing more Wii news. My big question is: What could Nintendo have left to share?

My word do I want to make some kind of joke about Nintendo and what it actually does with balls rather than juggle them......

But that would be to immature. I honestly dont think Nintendo will be abandoning its biggest cash cow just yet, they are going to let it graze a good while yet.

Other than Kirby and Zelda, I seem to recall Miyamoto mentioning that they were working on Pikmin 3, and there's always a chance for a new Star Fox, F-zero, or Mario spin-off.

Edit 2:

This is the first time someone edited an article because of my post. Neat

It almost feels as if they will be announcing the Wii 2. I mean it seems unlikely that they will given that they can still get a couple more years out of the system. But what first party games would they put out? I mean Super Mario Galaxy 3? Another Metroid game?

I dunno, maybe a follow up to Luigi's Mansion.

Nintendo better stop juggling all those "balls" and settle down with one or no one will end up with a satisfy ending. Its the wii or 3ds??
Pretty sure they'll have a satisfying ending.

Nintendo has a successful brand, so successful they can market a console on the concept that eventually there will be good games. 3DS would sell like wildfire without the 3D remakes of cash cows.

I'd like to have a reason to play with my Wii again - and would like to be reminded why I loved my N64 for all those years.

All I can really say is "Fair enough". While using the launch of Pokemon B&W as a reason feels a little strained, slowing down Wii content so the media only has the 3DS to focus on is a smart move.

*crosses fingers* PLEASE LET IT BE EARTHBOUND.... PLEASE LET IT BE EARTHBOUND....
Unfortunately, I've given up on Earthbound coming back to the States, but that's literally about the ONLY game franchise that they haven't released a game for on the Wii. Maybe we'll finally get Super Mario Space-Time Continuum?

F-Zero and Starfox would like to have a word with you.

Anyone spot the similarities between this and the decline in first party support for the DS around the time of the Wii's launch?

Actually, they already did time travel. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time on the DS.

I call Bullshit and shenanigans!

If last year's E3 taught me anything, it's that Nintendo cares for nothing but selling the Wii to old age homes! 80% of their games at E3 were for the DS or 3DS and I don't even remember seeing pokemon black and white at their press conference.

Nintendo isn't juggling two balls, it's sucking on one big dick. the DS dick, and has left us Wii owners in the dust. A zelda game (which I have big worries for) and a SIDE SCROLLING Kirby game is not pulling focus back to your BIG-NAME HOME CONSOLE which is supposed to be your flagship console.

Relying on these almost on-existent 3rd party titles for the Wii is going to sink your home-console's hardcore gaming audience (If any remains at this point). I'm not asking for CoD's or even Conduits! Stuff like Resi4 (which is 3rd party), LoZ (which I'm still afraid you're about to kill) stuff you're known for being good at! Adventure titles! Selling Rareware was the biggest mistake you could have ever done and now you're suffering for it.

You suckered me in with Brawl, but I should have known you'd leave us behind when you gave us a 3 month delay for the bloody thing!

Should have gotten an X-Box

Last year, Nintendo released a new Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, and Kirby for the Wii. The Mario and Donkey Kong games were praised as some of the best platformers in years, the Kirby game praised for its inventive art style, and the Metroid....has its fans. They are certainly not abandoning their fans. And, obviously, they're going to put some effort into their new handheld. Have some patience...they're not done with the Wii yet.

Also, judging by reactions to recent Rare games, it may not have been the huge mistake people make it out to be.

Well, i've kinda been waiting for a Wii-version of F-Zero so i've got my fingers crossed for E3.
Oh, and as others have mentioned: A Star Fox title would probably be pretty sweet as well.

Or perhaps Nintendo would take things all the way around and come with a new game series that's actually good! ...who knows.
