Blizzard Boss Defends Kotick

The Activision CEO's public image isn't a fair reflection of what the man is really like, says the Blizzard co-founder.

Bobby Kotick is probably one of the least liked people in the videogame industry, at least on forums and message boards. But Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime has stuck up for Kotick, saying that people give him a much harder time than he deserves.

According to Morhaime, the sound bites and comments that gamers latched onto to portray Kotick as a villain weren't an accurate representation of how he actually acted. He said that he had a very good relationship with Kotick, who he said was supportive of Blizzard, and understood what made the studio special. He added that Blizzard would not have supported the merger between Activision and Vivendi Games - Blizzard's parent company - if it had thought that Kotick would have been a bad custodian, or would have threatened its autonomy.

Although Morhaime makes a very good point about the fact that there are differences between the public face of Bobby Kotick and what he's really like, it's worth noting that Kotick's relationship with Blizzard is different than his relationship with other studios.

As Morhaime says, Blizzard has an enormous amount of autonomy, and thanks to the revenue that World of Warcraft generates, it's quite likely that Kotick needs Blizzard a lot more than Blizzard needs Kotick. That's not to say that Morhaime's comments about Kotick should be ignored, just that the context is slightly different than if the head of Beenox or Treyarch had said the same thing.

It's pretty fucking hard to take the context out of sending armed goons into a blue collar office building.

Those weren't real armed goons, we just hired them for a bitching publicity stunt. Unfortunately some people couldn't take a joke and quit. Truly they will be missed

I'd like to drive an axe into Kotick's head just to see what comes out.

I'm guessing spiders.

Delicious candy, I'm afraid, is unlikely.

Blizzard have a lot of pull in the industry. I very much doubt that a small studio will receive the kind of autonomy that the aforementioned company have with their artistic pursuits; to be fair in the name of business, there is already an established market demand for Blizzard products, whereas smaller developers have to balance artistic pursuit with establishing a higher market value. Artistic license has been a central issue with the ongoing conflict between ex-Infinity Ward employees and Activision, due to the recent rise of the COD franchise -- gaming is now a billion dollar industry and the steaks [sic] are high.

News update: Damned soul defends Hell. "It's really nice in the winter."

Kotick has no reason to treat Blizzard badly. They're a cash cow for him, and they have a rather high-profile "independence"-type deal. This is akin to the Walmart regional manager saying the retail clerks aren't mistreated.

No, I'm pretty sure the guy is a dick.

This generation of games needed the big developers to have a figurehead that would solidify video games as a true form of media in the World's eyes; all this tit has done is set the industry's legitimacy back a generation and give journalists and other established forms of media the ability to dismiss video games as a small niche market populated by children and nerds living in parent's basements. The industry needed someone who would put that mission first; ahead of the biggest profit margin possible. What we are seeing now is the games industry being turned into a 'walmart arena' where it's all about getting the most money possible out of doing the least work possible. This generation should have been about quality games that sold because of their overriding quality which made the World sit up and realise that video games can be art just as much as movie. Instead we have copy and paste yearly releases with less and less content but higher and higher prices.

If only someone like Peter Molineux had been that figurehead the industry needed...

Well you may not want to ignore his comments on Kotick but I sure as hell do. I'm really not suprised his best pet studio is happy with him. No one should be.

Umm... Blizzard CEO says the Activision CEO is a nice guy? Isn't their company called Activision-Blizzard? Yeah, if my boss was a complete douche I'd say he wasn't such a bad guy, either.

I never really have had an issue with him. I know that's not a popular opinion on the internet but there you have it. I think for myself.

The real issue here is how Logan Westbrook can get away with posting a news story about Kotick and NOT use that sweet picture of him holding the guitar hero controller.

As long as Prototype continues as a franchise and gets to become something amazing, he still has hope in my eyes.

but if Radical gets fucking dissolved before i see "Prototype Worldwide: Infect the World" then to hell with him

Of course Kotick is supportive of Blizzard and seems nice to them; They practically print money.
People don't like kotick I think because he seems to stagnate things. Blizzard are their own bosses, he doesn't directly control them.

Maybe Kotick is nicer in person to Blizzard than he appears to be in public statements. If that's the case, he needs to shut up and stop talking to the media, since he can't seem to say anything without seeming like a jerk. Let PR types do that, people who have taken classes and have experience delivering statements and news to the media without saying anything that can be taken negatively. Nice guy, jerk, saint or sinner, he doesn't come off well in the media, and it's time he accepted that and acted accordingly.

I'm wondering exactly who this message is for. Morhaime had to know that nothing he said could ever change the community's mind on Kotick, so why bother? Perhaps some trouble in management? This does seem a little random, given that Kotick hasn't given us a reason to flame him recently.
