Burnout Devs Working on New Need for Speed

Burnout creators Criterion Games are switching gears to make the next Need for Speed game, which Electronic Arts says will be a "revolutionary" take on the franchise.

Contrary to how it may seem, the Burnout team over at Criterion Games is not planning on spending the rest of their careers churning out DLC pack after DLC pack for Burnout Paradise. No, they're doing something altogether unrelated, something that's not even Burnout. As EA COO John Pleasants revealed at a conference today, the team is working on the next game in EA's other racing series, Need for Speed.

"We've taken the Burnout team and combined it with our Need for Speed franchise," he said about efforts to bring the series back to prominence. "So we now have that in our favor because that Burnout team is probably one of the more online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion."

So can we expect the next Need for Speed to take an "online-centric" approach like Burnout Paradise? Too soon to tell, but according to remarks made by EA boss John Riccitiello, the next game will definitely be different. The Burnout team, he told Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5285730/ea-burnout-devs-making-revolutionary-need-for-speed], is "is working on a revolutionary take on Need for Speed."

What will become of Burnout then? Will the two franchise merge into one Voltron of mega-racing games? Riccitiello doesn't think so. "I don't think you can fold Burnout into Need for Speed, because a lot of people like Burnout," he explained. "I don't know, if Paramount, in addition to owning Star Trek owned Star Wars, which isn't the way it is, I don't think you'd merge them."

You would consider it, though, wouldn't you?

RIP, Burnout series. You'll always be remembered as the series that got it right, yet had to go to make way for the more "capitalist" rival...

This could be quite epic.

Don't get me wrong, I love Burnout, but there was never enough emphasis on blistering speeds. I always prefered it over NfS because it was much more fun, so a merge between them would be...

Shit, if I wasn't already sitting down I think I'd have to.

So we're getting Burnout but with Licensed Vehicles?

Brilliant! Although it seems odd that after years of cranking out utter garbage they would put the developer of a rival series to work on it, they setting themselves up for comparison to Burnout and the old 'this is what would happen in a Burnout game, but because this 'isn't' Burnout we have put up with this shit,' schtick.
I have this horrible feeling Burnout is going to appear with new and exciting developers soon.

Just make it burn out with car customization and it will be great.

I really hope this doesn't mean the end of the Burnout series, but this will breathe sorely needed new life into the Need For Speed franchise.

Why don't they just release Need for Speed as a piece of DLC for Burnout. You know, since they've already released everything else for Burnout Paradise through DLC.

Hey! I know how they can fix Need for Speed! Ditch linear races, right? They can the whole thing setup in some kind of hub world, like an enormous one, with tons of stuff to unlock while still pandering to the gamers who ju-

There are no words to describe the feelings I feel after hearing someone actually say that Need For Speed is better than Burnout.. The Burnout fanboy in me is telling me to find you IRL and throw a bag of bricks at you, while my civilized side is.. telling me to do the same thing.

Need For Speed has always felt more as if it tried to be serious business, and not about fun, something that Burnout was all for. Did you ever play the Takedown mode? That's probably the most fun I've ever had, and ever will have, with a racing game.
Burnout is very fun for a few hours, but then it just gets boring eventually.

This is awesome, the NFS franchise has been going steadily down hill since the start of this generation, if anyone can get it back up to standard, the Burnout team will.
Fortunately the current Burnout is good enough that we don't need a sequel to it for another couple of years.

Well I guess that means realistic car crashes are going to be a big part of the next need for speed:)

How appropriate, a shitty, pretentious racing title developer working on another shitty, pretentious racing title.

STOP TRYING. RACING GAMES WERE PERFECTED WITH RUSH 2.
