Capcom Commits to the PC

Capcom says its commitment to the PC as a gaming platform is actually strengthening as it looks to expand into online gaming and markets that aren't dominated by consoles.

Broadly speaking, I don't think Capcom is a publisher that's really seen as a big player in the PC market. I don't know much about the company, I'll admit, but I do know a thing or two about PC gaming and I think those two facts combined are rather telling. But Capcom Vice President Christian Svensson says that although the PC market in Japan has historically been small, "our core technology for all of our platforms has been informed by and pushed by the PC, which is always at the bleeding edge." And as the company expands into new markets, it's also recognizing the need to embrace the platform at a consumer level.

"As we continue to expand our businesses in Russia, China, Korea and Brazil, the PC becomes increasingly important as it is the primary platform in those territories," he said. "In our recent investor relations presentations, we've mentioned that our online efforts are aimed squarely at South Korea and China, focused around the PC."

Svensson said the relatively small PC gaming market has translated into different "personal experiences" for Japanese developers than those in the West, but that producers "have continued to learn lessons about the PC gaming market and how it differs from that which they know well on the console side of the house." But while the rapidly-growing online gaming market is a big part of its focus, traditional game releases aren't being overlooked.

"PC gaming's profile is growing at Capcom. Both the U.S. and our European teams continue to request PC SKUs for new titles. We've got more titles coming with PC versions than ever before (e.g. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition [http://www.amazon.com/Resident-Evil-Operation-Raccoon-Playstation-3/dp/B004UDB9SA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305213686&sr=8-1], etc.). At green light meetings, our Japanese COO and the head of the consumer and online software business increasingly request a PC version if one is not being proposed at the outset of a project," Svensson said. "So in short, while we're still not yet where I'd like for us to be, the future is getting better for Capcom fans who are PC gamers all over the world."

Not bad, it's a start. Actually since DMC4 the quality of their PC ports has been pretty good with the exception of maybe the new bionic commando.

Uh-huh.

No doubt they'll also bring their always-online DRM as well. Since, you know, its totally not hurting any paying customers on PSN right now.

Hopefully they manage to optimize keyboard + mouse controls but failing that I'm perfectly okay with plugging in a controller. Make it happen Capcom. I promise not to pirate anything, even though I can literally walk down the street to buy a conspicuously cheap version in a plastic bag.

Also, please don't go the Activision/Blizzard route of pricing your games exactly the same as your US region copies... I swear, it was either Starcraft II or my rent. The exchange rate did not work well in my favor.

I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with their statement regarding how much revenue they're losing because of PSN being down.

I've noticed this myself, and I'm glad to see it. The PC version of Resident Evil 5 was superb, no hints of being a port there at all hardly. Top notch.

Can't wait to see more from one of my old favourite console developers.

It's hurting themselves right now too, though. Maybe this could change their minds? One can hope.

oh thats nice capcom, I look for- WHAT? STREET FIGHTER 4 ARCADE EDITION, YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME, YOU SAID IT WAS GONNA BE DLC.

In all srsness, it better still be avalbile as dlc, Im not buying ANOTHER full game that ive already played 3 times now (1 of those being optional, but I liked the idea of a portable street fighter 4)
