Crytek Calls DirectX 11 Patch a "Gift to the High End"

Crytek says the DirectX 11 patch for Crysis 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Crysis-2-Pc/dp/B002BS47YE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1308859580&sr=8-3] is "a gift to the high-end community," which was apparently a little let-down by the game's overly-accessible system requirements.

Gamers are a notoriously difficult lot to please. If a game does A, they want B; if a game does B, they want A. And if a game does A and B, it costs too damn much and the next two years' worth of DLC should have been included with the original release anyway. Take the Crysis games as an example. The original Crysis [http://www.amazon.com/Crysis-Pc/dp/B000PS2XDO/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1308859580&sr=8-7], released in 2007, was a decent shooter remarkable primarily for its jarring system requirements. Respectable gaming rigs qualified as minimum spec and nobody could play it at its glorious maximum settings because for all intents and purposes, the hardware needed to do so didn't exist.

"Crysis 1's intention was, if I were to play it three years later, it looks great. And it does, actually, it fulfilled that," Crytek CEO Cevvat Yerli told Gamsutra [http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/35410/Cryteks_Expensive_Gift_To_Its_HighEnd_Players.php]. "But it made it difficult for entry-level players."

Crysis became something of a poster boy for hyper-inflated PC system requirements, reflexively trotted out every time the non-stop, runaway expense of PC gaming came up for discussion. This fact didn't escape Crytek's notice.

"So with Crysis 2, we took a different direction, and it backfired a little bit," Yerli said.

It turns out that while baseline PC owners were unhappy because they had trouble running Crysis decently, the upper-tier crowd viewed the game as an ideal way to show off their muscular rigs and were unhappy because Crysis 2 didn't put the pedal to the metal. So now Crytek is gearing up to release the DirectX 11 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111221-Crysis-2-DirectX-11-Patch-Coming-Next-Week] patch for the game in what Yerli said was an attempt to "please everybody."

"This is much more like a gift to the high-end community," he said. "And I think gamers will appreciate that. It lifts up Crysis 2 and gives a sneak peak of how PC gaming will evolve in the future, if you support a high-end preference."

The Crysis 2 DirectX 11 patch, which will include a whole pile of visual upgrades and performance enhancements, will be unleashed on the world on June 27.

Well, better late than never, but the damage is already done, the reputation for rushing releases and cutting content (albeit purely for the shininess) purely so that console players can play it sooner has been set already.

Regardless, I'll download it and see how it looks.

That's nice and all, but Cervat, how about making the game actually fun to play?
*raises hand* I was under the assumption that they had already done that. The most fun singleplayer shooter experience I've experienced in 2011 so far, actually.

Except for those walking tank things. Fuck those psychic bastards and their supreme tracking abilities.

Either these guys at Crytek are lying their arse off or they are superficially slow, I choose both.

Graphics patch won't help with the lousy consolized gameplay. Why are those guns so far up my face (because that's how it's done on consoles). Gun origins in Crysis 1 were perfect.

Is this really such an issue? Do people really need to stroke their e-peen that much because they know they spent way to much on their computer but don't want to admit that it wasn't worth it? Grow up people. This is elementary school behavior.

There's a difference between "being awfully optimised" and "lacking modern graphical options". I mean come on, DX11 is pretty much becoming standard nowadays.

Not that I minded that much. Game looked pretty fine to me.

Well rather than repeat what's already being said, I'll just say that it's a little too late now. They missed the release window where I might have bought it, and now there's other things to play. I have a week off at home coming up after a little trip, and I'm thinking I'll get Dirt 3 not Crysis 2.

How is dx11 becoming the standard? developers are still catering to 4 year old + consoles and then porting the game over to the pc and adding mouse and keyboard support. Only game that comes to mind is BF3 that is been built with dx10 + dx11 in mind, although due to the crytek balls up i have no faith in what any developer says.

Yeah crysis 2 looked damn good the way it did, on face value, but when it was a backwards step from some of the graphical leaps crysis and crysis warhead did, it was very disapointing

You know, Crysis would be a better example if it was actually a fun game. "Oooooh, it looks amazing!!" only stands up for the first few minutes, and occasionally when a giant new 'scape looms over the screen, showing us how amazing it is. Apart from those few instances, what's actually in the game matter more. Graphics count once gameplay is done, other wise you'd be better off with screenshots.

This should've been an apology for not delivering what was promised in time.
Instead, they spin it around and call it a gift, really smooth move Crytek.

It should've been DX11 compatible from the start.
It's not like it's new or anything...

Plus great games deserve to be played as best as they can.
I think it's a result of making it available on consoles, which where not top notch hardware when they where released, many years ago.

Good to have all platforms though, can't say I care too much how games look; they all look good nowadays. From Crysis we just can expect more :p

Yeah, that is too bad... I mean, knowing it couldn't even use the most advanced graphic features, the reason I built this PC, when a bunch of games already did, I didn't invest in it. So, when it hits the bargain bin, maybe I'll bite. There have been too many other good games that have come out, ones that were more fun for me.
