Making More Gears of War is "Business 101," Says Bleszinski

Epic still has to figure out what direction it needs to take the series though.

Epic Game's design director, Cliff Bleszinski, says that if Gears of War 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Gears-War-3-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0H79C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311072772&sr=8-1] sells well, continuing the series is a no-brainer. He said that the folks at Epic were business people, and that giving the public more of what they wanted was "business 101."

Of course, with Gears 3 ending the current trilogy, a fourth game won't be quite as simple as just continuing the story of Marcus, Dom, and friends. Bleszinski said that Epic had to figure out what direction to take the series next. He suggested that a prequel might be possible, comparing it to Peter Jackson working on The Hobbit after The Lord of the Rings movies. "The key is figuring out what's appropriate," he explained. "What makes sense for this connected world that we're moving into? So, that remains to be seen. That's the million dollar question."

"Gears 1 and 2 sold about 6 million copies, so if this game comes out and, God willing, sells 8 or 10 million, it would be completely dumb to not do another one, right?" he added.

Of course, Gears of War 4, if it appears, won't be the first time that Epic has told other stories in that universe; the franchise also includes books and comics which either focus on the earlier exploits of the game's characters or feature new characters entirely. Personally, I'm hoping for a game where a member of the ill-fated Carmine family is the hero.

Gears of War 3 comes out for Xbox 360 on September 20th.

I like GoW, mainly because the mechanics for the game work really well. All the weapons feel and handle differently and there's enough variation in the multiplayer maps.

Uncharted is pretty good, but GoW still holds the crown for best TPS.

They're not really aiming for the same thing.

OT: Duh. But still, I wish developers and publishers would simply refrain from making business comments, its an instant turn-off.

Enough shit already spews out of Epic's mouth that leaves me finding them irritating at best.

I wouldn't mind a prequal at all...Set in the Pendulum Wars before the locust emerge and get some more backstory, of the world of Sera.

The gears story is amazing, really dont want it to end at number 3. Its like a good book that you cant put down, when it ends, depression starts :). More gears plx to keep me sane.

I'm aware of that, but they are still both cover based third-person shooters.

I find the way Gears handles a lot more preferable to Uncharted.

For some reason, Uncharted feels very... weightless. I can't really describe it, but there's no weight behind the characters or the weapons.

The game is still going to kick-ass and sell really well, which is good because I'd like to see the series as a whole continued. Seriously though, this game may very well leave all other games in the dust.

I can see what you mean behind the weapons, but I think Drake feels about right. Cover is too floaty though.

And what I meant was, Gears is a cover-based shooter, Uncharted is a game with a cover-system. If you're going to be riding on a dolphin, doing flips and shit, you need Drake to feel a little lighter.

I agree, Uncharted is as much about platforming as it is shooting.

sarcasm] Woot, Prequels and spin off's incoming. [/sarcasm

Ok I know whatever I say they will still do it.

Personally, I would like to see Baird and Cole get some Action hero time. Think about all the unexplored (in game form at least) back story. All I know is that Cole used to be a Futbaaaall player called the ColeTrain, and Baird... I really can't remember anything, although I know him and Marcus have a little history, something about the pendulum wars if I remember correctly.

So yeah, that's my two... pennies.

Yes Cliffy, how can Epic, who turned their backs on PC gamers, continue to wallet rape the console fanbase? This I wonder....

A prequel huh? I say it's a chance to fill some of the plotholes Gears 3 might leave behind. Oh yeah, and make our wallets burn of course, how silly of me.

Gears of War unlike Mass Effect doesn't really have much of a background lore or universe going on so I guess it will be pretty hard for them to make new ideas for a new game but I'll bet they'll come up with something goo (like a prequel or something.)
Not so. There's something like five Gears novels, as well as a spin-off comic. I suppose I should have mentioned them in the article. Oh wait... :p

Uhh, yes it does, actually. Read the books. Hell, even the games tell you a fair bit about the war.

As myself and many others across the 'net have been saying for years, a prequel set around Emergence Day would be the best thing to do with the series.

By giving us more great fun games, probably.
