Authorities Blame Games for Sword Attack

Police are pointing to a dispute over videogames as the motivation behind a teen's fatal attack on his great-grandmother.

A 14-year-old boy described by his neighbors as "kind of shy," has slain his great-grandmother and wounded his grandmother with a large medieval-style sword in Georgia. Police arrived at his home soon after the violence occurred to find the teenaged killer pacing across his front lawn beside the body with a pellet gun in one hand and his murder weapon in the other. What could have caused such a grisly scene? According to witnesses, his 77-year-old great-grandmother had asked him to turn off a videogame. Sigh.

Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller was one of the first policemen on the scene, and boy was he in for a surprise when he stepped out of his squad car. "He came out with a pellet gun and shot two windows out of a patrol car that was sitting there. He was shooting at us with the pellet gun and swinging the sword around in the air," Miller said. "We sent a K-9 unit in and he hit the K-9 with the butt of his gun. At that point, we tased him, then took him into custody."

Then again, maybe Miller shouldn't have been surprised after all. According to police investigators, this was the third, yes third, time this 14-year-old has been arrested, and the second time the arrest has involved a sword and his grandma. When asked about the first, Miller said, "This is not the same sword. He cut his grandmother on the foot with it that time."

So, wait a second. This was a different sword than the one he used to stab his grandmother's foot? Does that mean that someone actually thought this kid needed more than one sword? More importantly, does that mean that after the first round of sword versus grandmother took place, he was still allowed to keep them? There seems to be quite a bit wrong with how this tragedy went down, and though the absolute last thing that comes to my mind as a cause is "videogames," I'm sure that some group of blockheads can't wait to file this story under "P" for "proof that videogames cause violent behavior." Aren't videogames prevalent enough these days to finally be considered more of a coincidence than a cause?

Don't get me wrong; the real tragedy is this poor woman's untimely death. To live through so much history only to be skewered by the progeny of your offspring's offspring is downright heartbreaking. I just hope this deranged teenager didn't also help fuel the seemingly never-ending anti-videogame blame-game.

"Let us ignore this young man's violent tendancies and owning of deadly weapons and instead focus on what he does for fun, other than collecting swords and assaulting people, obviously."

To be fair, I'm making fun here and the police are merely investigating what role, if any, video games played in this particular case.

Well, video games are just easy to blame, really. Much easier to say "Oh, it's the video games fault, for giving him ideas and making him violent," instead of admitting that sometimes, something goes wrong with the brain. It makes parents feel better too, because they have something to blame besides themselves.

I blame the sword, it shouldn't have been pointy and made of out of metal.

The article never blamed video games? It said the kid attacked his grandmothers after they told him to stop playing games, but not that the games made him attack. It could have been them telling him to stop watch TV or quit masturbating. Video games was not the target of this article, it just happened to be the activity that he was asked to stop.

I'm all for hating the false blamers, but this is not an example of game blaming. I think everyone is pretty clear on the fact this kid was nuts to start.

If he's done this type of thing before then he is obviously messed up within his head. But nobody cares about that.

I chalk it up to either terrible parenting or the kid has something wrong with him mentally.

Yeah, but a psycho like that would have gone all murder happy if she had told him to turn of the cartoons too. Probably along with, turn off that music, clean your room, sweep the porch, go to bed, etc.

He's a violent and disturbed individual and if he had shot out two windows (if I were a cop) of my patrol car I would have shot him first. Send a lovable German Shep into that psycho's house I don't think so.

His own disturbed behavior caused these tragic events, not games.

It's not unusual for this site to use blatant sensationalist headlines that distort the truth of their source material to get hits on articles, so don't worry about it.

All and all, the debate is summed up by this post. The article didn't blame video games at all. It's a tragic death, but the author of the article on the Escapist is forcefully inserting a message that was totally absent from the source material. What questionable journalistic integrity, especially given the content of the source material.

EDIT: There's honestly nothing discussed. It was a tragic death that has a tangential link to video games. The article makes NO indication that the police blamed the attack on video games... hell, it even says that the boy is "deranged". Video games aren't being blamed for anything here.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. Video games no more caused this tragedy than Spongebob.

Video games don't kill people. Individuals with deep rooted psychological problems do.

I really don't know what to say here about the parenting but I think this sums it up nicely. Skip to 10:08

Why on Earth would you let him keep the swords after multiple assaults.

Wait, what? How the hell did he even get a sharp weapon?

Even my katana and daggers are blunt on purpose, because it's quite illegal to buy such objects. No shop will do that, you can sharpen them, but no battle-ready objects allowed.

if his Great grandmother, and grandmother, and him, are all living in the same house, odds are its probably a very crowded, very awkward, already-has-issues family.

MAYBE the grandmother was a controlling, abusive witch?

Maybe he was playing Kirby's Epic Yarn?

Yeah, what the hell, let's blame video games for everything: murder with a sword and you're playing too much Zelda, murder with a gun and you're, well, [insert 1,000s of games here], stole a car and you're playing too much GTA, killed a hooker and you're still playing too much GTA, dead from a poisoned sandvich and you're playing too much Team Fortress 2. Too many damned pilons? Too much Star Craft!

Seriously, video games are the scapegoat for the world's problems now. It's ridiculous.

Where was I? Oh, right, kid robs a bank and he is playing too much Kayne & Lynch, trying to buy black market Apple products with blue tiberium and he is playing too much Command & Conquer, keeps building chest high walls and he is playing too much Gears of War, rapes a farm animal and, damnit, "is Timmy playing that World of Zoo game again? I told him to knock it off...we should never have bought the THQ package on Steam. I mean, Metro 2033 is alright, but that zoo game doesn't sit right with me. It's trouble!"

I see then.

cause it couldnt possibly be all those samurai, pirate, and knight movies that influenced this.

Actually, look at the headline for the news story that he linked to.

"14-year-old slays great-grandmother with sword, stabs grandmother over video game dispute"
