The Ultimate Battlefield 3 Simulator Will Make You Cry

The "Ultimate Battlefield 3 Simulator" features hi-def video projected on a 360-degree screen, motion tracking, an omnidirectional treadmill - and 12 paintball guns pointed at your head.

With the release of The Gadget Show [http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-3-Limited-Pc/dp/B002I0HJZO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1319215033&sr=8-3] decided to see what it could do to make the experience a little more visceral. With the help of a $650,000 budget, this is what it came up with: a 360-degree dome screen powered by five hi-def video projectors, an omnidirectional treadmill to allow for walking any distance in any direction, infrared motion tracking, a pile of LEDs and a Kinect setup to tie everything together.

And paintball guns. 12 of them, to be precise, aimed "in the general direction of the player" and set to go off when the player is shot at. That's right, when you're getting shot at, you're getting shot at. It's not hot lead flying around the room but believe me, getting tagged by these things from just a few feet away stops being fun in a hell of a hurry.

Which is why it's so awesome! To watch, at least. Getting my junk punched by a 300 feet-per-second pellet isn't very high up on my list of things to do, but watching it happen to some other poor bugger? I am all over that action.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'd climb into this thing at the drop of a hat and love every second of it. This is the future, kids. And the future leaves welts.

Battlefield is an arcade FPS. It is impossible to play the game without being shot several times every minute, even if you survive and play well. So the paintball gun part is nothing more than sadism.

It would be better to have actual guns fire blanks in the room.

There are actual kinetic vests, that simulate bullets hitting you, you know. You don't need to get paint all over your full 360 degree screen.

That's kind of stupid using paintball guns.

Wonder what platform system they used to put that together, umm?

Thought Dice had put lots of restrictions on modding the game. Oh since it is a Tv show then it's fine. But you normal users don't get to do stuff like this. And thanks for doing this with the dumbest 'tech' show on TV.

No it isn't, because they hurt like a ***** and watching someone play this will make us laugh our balls off :p

I would choose other games for this setup but it will no doubt be entertaining.

Seriously, if I had the budget, I'd get one, hell, you could probably put those in amusement parks and arcades, they'd make a sh*t tonne of money.

If only i had the money to buy something like that, but i can't help but wonder what happens if the paintball misses and hits the screens.

That looks amazing!! I want one.

I feel like this rig should be altered for the next Need For Speed title. Full 360 degree rotation means excellent turns and crashes.

While we should be concerned about how they would simulate melee attacks, grenades, or being run over, I think the real trouble starts once they get the teabagging function online.

True... but it hurts more to be hit by a paintball, and thusely is more entertaining to those watching the poor bastard getting tagged.

What I liked was how they handled the moving around.

Because we're an American site.
Then do what alot of the rest of the world does, report the local to event figure first then add the local to site figure afterwards. Or even the otherway round.

Yep saw it the other day on another site - it's bloody amazing.

I've gotta agree that using a kinetic vest would be much better than a paintball gun - limits the pain to your chest (I've shot a guy in the balls with a paintball gun once - the expression on his face was not one of a man having fun) and the clean up is easier, or rather non-existent.

Either way - if I ever get a ridiculous amount of money, I know what I'm spending it on.

As Keanu Reeves would say: "Woah."

Seriously, though, this looks awesome. Can't wait for a home version of THIS to be on sale.

They do make paint-less paintballs. And getting shot with one hurts just as bad.

On-Topic:
I think the obvious next-step for this would be to get 64 of them, and get a bunch of guys to play conquest. It'd be interesting to see how people's strategy changes when they get shot for real.
