Rumored PSP2 Will Boast Powerful Quad Core GPU

Specifications for the rumored PSP2 that Sony [http://www.sony.com] is allegedly working on may have been leaked and could possibly indicate that the system will be built around a low-power quad core chip codenamed Hydra.

PSP Go [http://www.eurogamer.es/articles/caracteristicas-graficas-de-la-psp2], which we already know about, but an entirely new unit which will be as powerful as an original Xbox.

The source of all that power will be Hydra, a quad core version of Imagination Technologies' Dell Mini 12 [http://www.imgtec.com/News/Release/index.asp?NewsID=449]. According to the report, the processor will achieve 133 million polygons per second with a fillrate of four gigapixels per second, with an additional boost provided by PowerVR's tile-based deferred rendering.

I have no idea what any of that means but apparently it's pretty hot stuff. The single core version of the SGX chip was Digital Foundry [http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=3494&p=7] blog noted.

It's impossible at this stage to confirm the veracity of the rumor but Digital Foundry also said that the information it has about Eurogamer's source, coupled with ongoing rumors [http://www.imgtec.com/News/Release/index.asp?NewsID=412] that Sony licensed a "high-performance graphics core" from Imagination Technologies in November 2008, leads it to consider the story "a likely proposition." Sony has refused to comment but Eurogamer predicts that an official announcement should be forthcoming by the end of the year.

I always saw the PSP as a bit of a flop to be honest, putting a powerful GPU in it won't help. I don't buy hand held games for the graphics.

The single core version of the SGX chip was demonstrated at CES running Quake 3 Arena at over 30 frames per second
Wait wait wait....We ARE in 2009 right?
So a single core of this chip can run a 1999 game at 30fps.

Umm...Am I suppose to be amazed? Since any old Ati\Nvidia card can destroy that game, eat it and spit it back out and eat it again.

I really dont get what's so amazing now.

Why did you necro this? DOH! My mistake there, thought that this was pre-PSP Go! news due to a lack of sleep clouding my head.

And it will cost $1000 dollars.
Get your facts straight. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.118344] It will cost $249.

Rumors claiming that specs for a PSP SUCESSOR have surfaced do the rounds.

There's enough in one line to know that this isn't old news.

So is the PSPGO just going to become sony's red-haired stepchild?
Check the date on the story, matey. It's from JULY, back when we didn't know that this "PSP 2" was actually the PSP Go!
Yes, July 7th 2009. Sounds awfully like today.

meh.

I'll get a psp go when they're cheap.

I don't need a handheld xbox. I have an xbox, and I don't leave my house.

Aaaand that's why people need sleep. My bad. Right now I'm running on caffine... and it doesn't help me think clearly, it just keeps me awake.

Jeez, I thought that this was some necro. Well, I suppose it's cool to hear rumors of a PSP 2, even though I'm more concerned about a second analog nub than I am with this core stuff.

The DS, without any fancy superprocessor, still manages to top the sales charts. So I highly doubt concentrating their investments in making their handheld more powerfull won't be good strategy for Sony.

Compared to the DS, yeah. Compared to any other handheld console that Nintendo didn't make, they're doing great.

I think you forgot to add a few zeros on that.

Oh for fuck's sake! We don't even have the PSP Go! yet, why are we still talking about PSP2s and Xbox720s and Nintendo Piddle's and PlaystationB4's?

I was about to go on a rant about something in this, but I don't feel like it. So HA! No fanboyism from me today!

I'm still wondering, why the hell are we talking about PSP2s and the 720s and the Piddle's ect..... I mean, come on, the PSP Go! was just freakin' announced why are we jizzing our pants for a PSP2 nowadays?

hm, would be rather pointless to have the PSP Go if their going to announce the PSP2 by the end of the year? also, what ever happened to the 10-year product life cycle? doesn't it apply to the PSP?

I have a feeling this will probably take a year to make at the least, and someone in the press wasn't patient enough to wait.

Regardless, I'm happy with my PSP3000.
