Update: Musician Gets Revenge on United Airlines Via YouTube

Don't mess with musicians: Growing fed up with United Airlines' refusal to take responsibility for the destruction of his $3500 guitar, one singer decided to take his protest to YouTube in the form of a viral music video.

When Canadian band Sons of Maxwell [http://www.sonsofmaxwell.com/] flew to Nebraska for a tour, they watched in horror from the windows of the plane as United Airlines' baggage handlers carelessly threw around familiar-looking instrument cases while loading up the aircraft. Upon reaching their destination, singer/songwriter Dave Carroll found that indeed, his expensive Taylor guitar had been severely damaged.

After spending nine months unsuccessfully trying to get United to accept responsibility for the damage, a fed-up Carroll told uncooperative United representatives that there would be repercussions. No, he wasn't going to sue them - like a true musician, he was going to express his anger through song.

Then, he was going to post that song on YouTube for the world to see.

It's hard to imagine this having any sort of actual impact - or at least, if it does dissuade anyone from flying United, I can't see it being enough people to make the airline reconsider its (admittedly infuriating) stance towards Carroll's situation.

Even so, it's a very clever and entertaining form of revenge. Even if Carroll never gets the compensation he rightly deserves, he deserves points for trying.

Update: Well, well, well. This might have done something after all. A post to the official United Airlines Twitter indicates [http://twitter.com/UnitedAirlines/status/2522271993] that the airline will be attempting to recompense Carroll for his loss: "This has struck a chord w/ us and we've contacted him directly to make it right."

Good for you, Dave.

*shudders* Please. Someone break his guitar again. United may break guitars but bad country music rapes ear drums. *goes off to make revenge video against this guy*
You saw it was about a guitar, you couldn't have figured it was anything but country music, yet you complain anyway, prick.

he definitely deserves points, atleast it's catchy, I'll be whistling this for weeks.

I guess he had two guitars..

That's a clever way of getting revenge. United Airlines did break a bottle of hot sauce I bought in Taiwan; wish I could write a song about it :)

Suing would cost a lot more than the guitar is worth. Going this route, United may end up being bombarded with enough phone calls from fans or just people who are pissed that they screwed the guy over, they may retract their no to the claim. Or they may end up suing the guy for slander and the court will find in favor of Carroll and he'll get his $3500.

Or absolutely nothing will happen.

Honestly it might not even be about that. Music is a way to express yourself, maybe he's just venting. I'm also tired of people being like 'I don't see this making a difference' and implying that you might as well not even try. If no one ever tried to make a difference where would we be now

Yeah I'm probably taking this a little too seriously... the song is somewhat entertaining knowing the backstory behind it... I bookmarked it to show to my gf later :p

I'd be pissed, too. I hope these folks get some money for their trouble. United may even appear to be somewhat apologetic, but it's all in the interest of saving face and making more money in the long run.

Remember kids, if a corporate scumbag makes life tough for you, make life tough for the bottom line and watch them come around.

Oh the power of the internet and YouTube. While i see its catchyness and understand the motive behind it i'm still reminded that's it country and i hate country music with a passsion.

P.S is it just me or does this guy look a little bit like Luke Wilson?
