Bethesda Shows Off Skyrim "Game Jam" Mods

The fruits of Bethesda's internal Skyrim "Game Jam" are many and varied, ranging from spears and kill cams to a mud crab the size of Skar.

DICE [http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim-Pc/dp/B004HYIAPM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1328805537&sr=8-4] last night to talk about Bethesda's internal "game jam," in which everyone on the team got a week to create whatever Skyrim mod their heart desired. The results were put together in a "sizzle video" for a company-wide presentation held in December and which Howard thought was cool enough to show off during his presentation.

Hard to argue with that conclusion. Who wouldn't want to build their own custom house somewhere in the wilds of the Rift, ride a dragon from town to town or become a flying Vampire Lord, complete with your very own Vampire Imp minions? Not that we'll necessarily get to do any of that stuff, as Howard said that how much of it sees the light of day has yet to be determined, but with the recent release [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115724-Skyrim-Creation-Kit-Goes-Live-With-a-Bonus] of the Skyrim Creation Kit it seems like kind of a no-brainer.

Ahhhh, mute the music! That's better.

Some of those ideas are cool (build your own house, dungeons requiring a torch or light spell to navigate). Some of them are terrible (high level Draugr? No! No more draugrs. They feel like they are 99% of the enemies as it is).

I'd also like the snow footprints. It would be cool to have more gameplay based tracking people/creatures without the use of the compass. It would fit my hunter character very well.

Wow. Amazing mods. I wonder when/if they're going to get released so we can play with them.

That was pretty cool. If they do release them I hope they're free.

Nice work. It would be great to see Bethesda release at least some of the realism/immersion enhancements (snow footprints; seasonal foliage; underwater visuals et al) in a standard patch. I really like the idea of mixing spells in creative ways too. It wouldn't need to be as extensive as Magicka but some greater flexibility and a little randomness would be welcome.

spears, footprints, seasonal foliage, flow lighting, house building (you built a whole town in a Morrowind expansion) the kill cams.

Mounted Combat, you mean I won't die because I thought about riding a horse... Brilliant!

I am so happy the creation kit is finally out, if only I didn't have to work.

The lycanthrope and vampire talent trees would be awesome - they seem pretty useless as is.

... but to paraphrase one YouTube comment; "You can do this in a fucking week? Slackers!"

I have to wonder why these things aren't in the game. They did all of this in a week? I'm sure given a few weeks, they could have implemented all of it into the full game. This video feels like, "Ha ha ha ha ha ha, look at all the crap YOU don't get to play with." Particularly to console players who can't mod their games.

I wish they'd added cliff racers!

No, I'm only kidding. But the addition of water arrows and NPCs who can relight torches offers the potential for some seriously Thief-like gameplay, which is very cool. Don't care for the idea of fire and ice arrows, though; I tried the fletcher mod in Morrowind back in the day and the addition of magic arrows in conjunction with magical bows and high archery skill threw things way out of balance. I ended up ditching the mod entirely after a few days.

I have a suggestion: Instead of having this Game Jam week for a week AFTER they've completed the game, they should have it 1 week BEFORE finishing the game. This would of course have to be followed by Bug Hunt week. After that, the game goes gold and everyone wins.

But seriously, some of these features should have been in the game already, like the water flow, kill cams for ranged/magic, actual dynamic weather and so on...

I'm throwing money at the screen, but nothing is happening! D:

At least I hope they add all of this stuff to the workshop :)
