Nintendo Announces 3DS XL

Nintendo's redesigned handheld will appear in stores sooner than you think.

More than two weeks after an E3 press conference centred mostly on the Wii U, Nintendo has revealed a successor to its 3DS handheld: the larger, more efficient 3DS XL. The device, set to go on sale this summer, will include an improved battery, 90%-larger screens and a larger SD card for storing downloaded games.

The 3DS XL's battery has been upgraded to keep up with the larger backlight, however the actual reported increase in battery life is minor at best; you'll be able to squeeze about an extra half an hour out of it while playing 3DS games, or one or two extra hours while playing DS and DSi games compared to the original 3DS. Storage space is better this time around as well, with its bundled SD card doubling from 2GB to 4GB.

There will be three colors available at launch: silver, blue and red. The border around the screen has gone from piano black to a matte black, so no more shiny fingerprints at the fringes of the screen.

The screen itself has grown, taking up a larger proportion of the handheld's surface area. Much like when the DSi's larger brother was introduced, this incarnation won't offer a higher resolution despite the screens being almost twice as large. Just how much this will affect the picture quality remains to be seen.

You won't have to wait long to get your hands on it, as the 3DS XL (known as the LL in Japan) will hit retailers in the US on August 19th priced at $199.99, making it only $30 more than the 3DS. The release in Europe and Japan comes a little sooner, on July 28th, at a somewhat higher price of £179.99, €199.99 and 18,900¥ respectively.

The higher price point in these regions comes despite the news that the console will reportedly not include an AC adapter in Europe or Japan (The US release will include an adapter). Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata stated in his European release that this was in an effort to cut costs, but made clear that the device will be fully compatible with current DSi, DSi XL and 3DS chargers.

I only tempted for the longer battery life (even if it's only abit) and bigger memory size as the larger size does not appeal to me. Still I'm planning to buy on this Christmas so they could release another version by then (unlikely).

I have to agree with the person who made this picture. It only makes sense.

Well I missed the 3DS the first time around and E3 has brought out my inner-most Nintendo fanboy, so if I can afford it at some point before my fanboy-ism returns to the dark corner of my soul I'll probably end up getting it.

No 2nd Analog stick...when there's SO MUCH DAMN ROOM.

If this was Sony, the handheld would be DOA, but because it's Nintendo they're getting a free pass?

BAH!

While I do enjoy my DSi, I have never gotten into the 3DS, mainly because I cannot see in 3D on a 2D plane. It gives me a large migraine watching it.

And since the 3DS floundered until Mario titles were released, are we going to be waiting so an XL-sized Mario to save this handheld?

If it were Sony, it would have 4 analog sticks with a click button for all cardinal directions of each. Do the math since I can't really. It's 20 potential button clicks :)

It's almost as if they have no sense of direction.
The problem with adding a second circle pad would be alienating a huge part of the original 3DS userbase. They would be forced to buy the circle pad peripheral. They could have done it if they forced the CPP price a lot cheaper or release some bundle packs with some games that require it.

Doable, but I still understand what they were thinking about.

But I strongly agree with the guy who said no ac no buy. Seriously Nintendo? What the hell is wrong with you. It's a portable console. If it doesn't have an AC, what the hell am I supposed to do with it. And not including it to take the price down is RETARDED at best because either way I have to buy it. And buying it separated is even more expensive.

Well this wasn't totally predictable. [/sarcasm]

The only thing that worried me was that they'd put a second analog stick on it, a fear brought on by the Circle Pad Pro's release (I bought one for the hell of it).

But with that out of the way... I'm satisfied with my hardware. The screen size was never an issue for the Lite, and is no different for me here. Good for whoever wants a bigger 3DS though.

I like how they just assume that people have DSi or 3DS chargers lying around. I have a Lite Nintendo, and you didn't make the second stick standard. Why would I buy this over a normal 3DS?

No second analog stick? Seriously, Nintendo... you made an awkward "fits around the old 3DS plug-in adapter bulky nonsense edition" gadget to provide another analog stick because some games needed it. Now, they're making a significantly larger variant of the thing and NOT including it built in? What is the bloody point? On top of this, games that used the existing adapter 2nd analog pad/stick won't be able to use it on the new XL because of the size, unless Nintendo comes out with an even larger and bulkier version!

I don't yet have a 3DS because at current there isn't decent support for 3DS-mode flashcards able to play 3DS games, but I figured I'd finally convert over from my old DSLite on the next 3DS iteration which I expected to have dual joypads and perhaps features made to integrate better with the WiiU like NFC, multitouch and more. . I guess that's still coming, but it seems foolish to release this XL version without at least another analog joypad, given that there is already an accessory present. Nintendo has always been pretty good with advancing their handheld system in some way or another, even within the same "game generation", but much like the original DSi LL, this seems to be a very minor improvement if any.

If I can get $200 spared up for any reason, I can see my next big purchase. I was waiting on the 3DS, but I might have to get this.

Wow, Appletendo re-releasing an updateed version of their portable hardware? What a shock!

I guess it's good for those who've held out. While it kind of sucks for those who've made recent purchases, they really shouldn't be surprised. You should have seen an update coming several miles away.

Nintendo I want to you give you my money, but you don't seem to want it. Its all nice and crisp but you refuse it at every turn. Why do you not add a second analog stick. Then I would actually buy the damn thing.
