Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Set for 2013 Release

Another trailer is out for the sword-swinging entrant to the Metal Gear universe.

Hideo Kojima has Tweeted [https://twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/235641873769836544] and thus it must be: Metal Gear: Revengeance has a release date of February 21st 2013. This latest reveal came as part of GamesCom 2012, as Konami builds anticipation for the latest entrant to the Metal Gear franchise with a snazzy new trailer for its hack-and-slash war epic.

You play as Raiden, Solid Snake's pal, slicing and dicing your way through an unnamed - possibly African, judging by the trailer - country recovering after a civil war. Raiden's a hired hand for private military contrators, but all is not as it seems and pretty soon Raiden is up to his neck in enemy cyborgs. At least he has a happy little doggie for company.

This is Platinum Games' first shot at Metal Gear, and also the first time that Hideo Kojima has sat on the sidelines; he's executive producer this time, as his attention is on other projects. Metal Gear: Revengeance was previously known as Metal Gear Solid: Rising but became Revengeance - dropping the Solid - to make plain the difference between this title and its predecessors.

There have been some rumbling from fans wary of the switch from stealth to gung-ho swordplay, but developer Platinum Games is that same bunch who put Bayonetta together, so the combat should work very well. Quinton Flynn, the voice actor, is reprising his role as Raiden, which should also please traditionalists. It's not Metal Gear as it has been, but - judging by the trailer - the new style should prove interesting to play.

The only reason I'm even remotely interested in this game is because of the way the combat looks. Other than the new play style, I find it hard not to giggle at the trailer. Maybe it's just me, but it's so cheesy xD. I know that doesn't mean the story will suck, but still.

I think you meant February 21st, 2013.

Anyway, I dont care if it isnt an authentic MGS game, its not MGS, its Metal Gear Rising, and from what Ive seen, I hope to god it gets three games fallowing it as well.

Revengeance? Really? I haven't played the Metal Gear games, so that might have something to do with the story, but... Revengeance? I can't take that seriously.

First thing that this makes me think of is the teenage male equivalent of the Twilight self insert fantasy.

Everything a teenage boy would dream of, and there was like a cyborg... ninja! And he's fighting like a robot dog with a... chainsaw!

It even has the title to match it...

This is sad.
I was lured in by what I thought would be Metal Gear but I ended up watching several min of what appeared to be a Devil May Cry ripoff.
No thanks.

Being a MGS fan i'm actually OK with this. It's set in the same world, it has a character who has already proven himself to be a super strong ninja cyborg in the last game, and hopefully it'll have a related story. To me this is a fun spin-off game. It's not part of the solid series so no betrayals here. I just hope it has that nice Kojima charm where he has tons of little Easter eggs scattered around everywhere.

But really.. revengeance? Really? That name alone dashes my hopes a bit. I'm not the only one with this complaint.

If that's Kojima's attempt to write action movie dialogue then it's quite hilarious. The guy is bad enough when trying to write stuff "seriously"

Hate to be that guy, but "Revengeance" isn't a word.

Just vengeance would have worked fine.

Its been heavily stated that Kojima actually had little to do with this game at all actually. Even when he announced it 2 years ago at E3 he didn't even look pleased that he had to.

The combat looks almost exactly like how the Afro Samurai video game played. Nothing new here.

I didn't think so, looking at the trailer. I mean I'm sure the combat will be top notch, and I know Kojima is sometimes in need of an editor, but the way Revengence is presented just seems so... cheesy and cliche. Like the story thinks it's /much/ smarter than it actually is, and it's trying to appeal to people outside of the MGS fanbase. The trailer seems to be occupying the same place as the FF7 re-release trailer.

Hopefully whatever Kojima is cooking up next will be pretty good, although I wonder why he left someone else to work on the story, especially how it was pretty much wrapped up at the end of MGS4. If nothing else, it'll likely occupy the same "what if?" universe of the Acid series.

Hideo Kojima is only the executive producer. The writing and directing are done by other people, Kojima is just overseeing the project. His hands are on this as much as they have been with other Metal Gear games. The game was moved from Kojima Productions to Platinum Games so its not even a fully Kojima game. Hopefully the game's story is good because the combat looks like the system that was used in the Afro Samurai video game. Not a bad combat system but got repetitive fast.

Kojima's writing has ALWAYS been cheesy, cliche, pretentious, and long-winded. I think it's hilarious how he's thought of as one of the best writers around despite not being able to write worth shit and only getting worse. I'm sure his next project will be just as much of a trainwreck lacking in succinctness.

Wow, they're making another Ninja Gaiden game alread---oh wait, it's Metal Gear with the most ridiculous made-up word for a title ever. Seriously, "Revengeance"? He's not just after revenge, and seeking vengeance is for pussies! No, he's going all the way to get himself some REVENGEANCE!

Honestly, how is this series still going? It's like Resident Evil...it just won't fucking end.

Captcha: "It is enough." Amen to that.

Yeah, pretty much what I thought, didn't think he was involved too much in it, I havent played Bayonetta, but I've heard good things about the combat, I mean even God of War and DMC combat got repetitive eventually, so as long as it's solid, I'm sure it'll be good fun to play.

Well, I've always found myself sucked into his work, I'm not saying he's some master of writing, but I've always enjoyed the stories. Granted he is in need of an editor and some scenes are just totally pointless exposition where people are talking and not really saying anything, but I find that if I'm playing on my own and suspend my disbelief I can really enjoy myself. I think he gets a lot more bad/good press than perhaps he deserves, but in terms of video games, he's unique in his expression or at least the way the MGS series is directed, so it seems a lot "bigger" than it is under a massive amount of inspection.

But I enjoy it in the same way I enjoy a comic book, people likely read too much into it, but if you allow yourself to get lost in it, you'll enjoy it and ignore the absurdities.

In the Rising trailer though; I've never found it painful to hear stuff delievered, this trailer just seems like a double dose of cheese wrapped up in marketing to anyone they can possibly market to. It doesn't really "feel" Metal Gear, if you know what I mean? The "Make it right", Depeche mode over the top, really doesn't fit the tone established in the rest of the franchise.
