Apple Judgment Rocks Samsung's Share Price

Apple gets $1 billion damages from South Korean electronics giant Samsung.

Apple's continuing dispute with Samsung reached a resolution of sorts this weekend. The California jury took two and a half days to consider before finding Samsung guilty of copyright infringement, throwing out all of Samsung's counter-claims and imposing $1 billion damages on the South Korean electronics giant. Apple will continue what Steve Jobs called a "thermonuclear war" strategy against Samsung by calling for injunctions against many of its competitor Samsung's products. Samsung is expected to appeal the California court's judgment.

A Samsung spokesman called the verdict "unfortunate." He said that the "verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer." It's also a significant loss for Samsung, which sent its stock price tumbling by about 7.5% as of time of writing. That equates to about $12 billion, gone in the blink of a shareholder's eye. Apple will follow up its victory with a call for an injunction against 17 Samsung smartphones and their variants; about 39 different handsets altogether. If this injunction succeeds it will be a further economic blow for Samsung, but perhaps not as bad a shock as might have been expected since the injunction list includes only a relatively small proportion of Samsung's overall product list.

Which is a shame, because Samsung actually makes good stuff.

I wonder how things would have gone in a south Korean court?

I think you could class this as, after having won the fight, putting the boot in.

Apple is trying to make a statement that they ARE the smartphone market. They just come across looking like thugs.

I didn't buy Apple products because of the already high price tag. This won't help my opinion.

This will be a loss for the American economy in general.

After all, would you want to compete against an American company in America if you ran the risk of getting sued by them? No American judge will side with a foreign company.

It's a sad day when Apple are able to compete for dominance in such a cowardly way. The old way would have been to simply make the superior product. Guess Apple knows just how crap theirs are for the price you pay for them.

In the Korean court, both Apple and Samsung got the blamed of copying each other and both had some products banned from the market.

I can't wait until the injunction goes through. Samsung's stock will go further down, and that will be the time to BUY BUY BUY. It's a safe bet that the company will recover, over time, so they're a really good investment right about now.

That being said, it hurts that Apple won; I hope Samsung is able to appeal this.

P.S. Thanks

I really like Apple products, but I had hoped Apple would lose this suit. I think we, as consumers, all benefit when competing companies can take the best features from other products to develop better products of their own. Now, if this ruling stands, I'm afraid companies will be gun-shy about any feature that might be close to what someone else has done.

Oh, I think the quote I've heard bandied about is that Apple would go "thermonuclear" on Android, not Samsung in particular. (Something I think is a waste of Apple's, and everyone else's time and energy.)

Welcome to the modern era, where multi-nationals fight each other not in the market, but in the courtroom.

the case was a jury case and it took a whole 21 hours for them to decide that 6 of the 7 patents infringed, including Samsung using rounded rectangles that are actually owned by apple.

since when can you own common shapes?

and if apple does wipe android out who are they going to copy off, the drop down notifications are stolen off andoird by apples defination, so is the imprved voice to phone com's (siri).

i think the apeal for mistrial is going to go though as most of the juries live and work in silicon valley, the same location apple is based so it looks stupidly biased

captchas = walk free, that seems apat

I would say I'm never going to buy Apple again but then I realised I never bought their stuff in the first place.

Something about Apple always annoyed me, the adverts, products and the prices. this is a step up from annoying mind, some of these patents just seem insane. Why does the US patent office grant these things?

I don't think I'm ever buying an Apple product again. I'm way over their patent trolling and the facade they've built up of being anything but a greedy company in desperate pursuit of a monopoly. They're like a larger, more powerful and dickish EA. They just strike all the wrong chords with me.

*wipes hands* I'm done.
If all goes well, Apple might get what's coming to them. http://www.androidpit.com/google-vs-apple-android

There is also the implication that the Jury isn't doing their job properly

Big companies do this to eachother all the time. I scoffed at the lawsuit myself, but then I saw this particular bit of evidence:

Its hard to really say that samsung ISN'T duplicating the look and feel of the apple products. You can't look at the samsung tablet and say "OOO NEAT DID YOU GET A GALAXY TAB? YEAH?" Its more "hey, new ipad? no? what, samsung?"

Samsung's defense is "you can't protect rectangles with rounded corners," but theres a certain limit before people can start duplicating the look and style of a device which has set the new standard for a technology.

All tablets will probably end up looking quite a lot like the ipad, because the design just works great (tablet PCs were a joke prior to the ipad), but samsung might have gone a little too far too fast.

However, the few months between the samsung product and the ipad is pretty short- did they really bring a duplicate to market less than 6 months later? If they really did, thats some chops.

Big companies do this stuff all the time. The award will get cut in appeal and this will roil around forever.

Not to beat on the subject but the past 10 years major companies have basically bullied their competition with copyright infringement suites to a very comfortable monopoly. Apple is just this year's flavor of the month. As sad as it is, nothing we say or do right now is going to matter because the majority is blissfully ignorant and want to remain that way. As long as they get their goodies, they do not care where or how they get it.

Sorry if I sound too cynical but when you hear people always eagerly want to talk about american idol and funny sitcoms but never look twice on this news it makes you think that people want to be slaves.

Imagine if this same claims were applied to other tech: you can't make a dishwasher with a form of a cube and a door in the front. You can't make washing machines with a porthole. You can't make television in a rectangular form. It's just stupid beyond reasonable. Grats apple. You know own the rectangle.
