World of Warcraft Hackers Kill Thousands in Minutes

An instant-kill exploit turns several cities into makeshift graveyards.

When you enter a city in World of Warcraft and see nothing but skeletons everywhere, it must be a little unnerving. Unfortunately, it's not some elaborate role playing scenario; it's an exploit that just so happens to kill everything and everyone around the player using it, NPCs and all. Hackers armed with the exploit recently decided to join a number of realms and kill everyone in close proximity, covering cities with piles of bones within minutes.

One of the hackers confessed to the deed on a WoW exploits forum, explaining that the "kill hack" did no permanent damage and, despite being highly inconvenient to its victims, was hardly game-breaking. "Some people liked it for a new topic of conversation and a funny stream to watch, and some people didn't. The people who didn't should be blaming Blizzard for not fixing it faster (four hours of obvious use is sad).

"It's not like I added 20,000,000 gold to everyone's inventory and broke the economy, but look at the big Chinese gold seller companies who are doing this every day," the hacker said in their defense. "Now ask yourself who is really ruining the game. It's not us. That's my justification."

Some hackers put their abilities to work, with one user able to kill everything in the End Time dungeon in three minutes [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoM_sOC7jMA] by simply running through the level. The hacker said their group would've attempted more difficult raids had Blizzard not picked up on the exploit sooner.

If you're already getting ideas, you're too late to the party: Blizzard community manager Nethaera has announced that the exploit has since been hotfixed. "It's safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth. As with any exploit, we are taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation."

Seems those politicians weren't so incorrect with their "Deaths per Second" comment after all.

On-Topic this isn't anything special, there have been dozen of bugs like this (Kazzak kiting, Reckoning Bomb, Rampage Bomb, Mega Corruption, probably a few more I can't think of right now.)

Why these people feel the need to rationalize and defend this is beyond me. You found a hack, you used it for the lulz and had fun pissing a lot of people off. There's no need to start with the "b-b-but we're not really hurting anyone and it's Blizzard's fault really!"

I guess he must have let the forum rage get to him, which is a pretty shitty quality in a troll.

It was probably more along the lines of "Blizz shouldn't ban us because of this."

Awesome - What hat is this hack? Grey? I know of a guy that hacked the AH so it would give them huge gold and they just sent the source code over to blizzard to improve the game's security.

Generating gold still isn't as entertaining as being a black lantern, though.

i expect there to be bans anyway because it's like, just because it's funny doesn't mean that they're going to let genocide slide

It's a massive inconvenience. You're wasting other player's time. It might be amusing but it's also a dick thing to do.

I don't know. It's like tying someone's car up with string so they can't get in. And the only way to get in is to cut the string. It's malicious.

Saying "It's not like we flooded the economy" is a weak excuse. It's like when being arrested for assault "It's not like I killed him".

There was an exploit which was legitimate which was hot fixed and was funny. But it harmed no one.

Get a Shaman with Fire Nova Totem. Place it on the floor. At about 1 second remaining, log out. This causes your totem to turn neutral upon detonation. This hurts all npcs in the radius.

If you were max level, this would 1 shot level 1s. You know those gold spammers that used to hang around the mailbox outside the bank? Sadly Blizzard didn't agree with players taking the gold spammers into their own hands and removed the exploit and suspended a few players.

Apparently some level 1 bank alts died in the war, but they shouldn't have been there to begin with.

I got horrible flashbacks to the Corrupted Blood Incident [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrupted_blood] when I watched the youtube-vid in the article. Was that just me getting flashbacks or did anyone else too?

Anyway, how come this hack wasn't found, exploited and fixed earlier? Was it a patch/the expansion that made this possible?

Gotta say, maybe it's my distaste for Blizzard, but I found this video to be pretty humorous. I kept hoping Blondie the Death Bringer would turn around and touch the stealthed rogue, but I guess he/she wasn't paying much attention.

I did get a good laugh when the gnome tried to attack "her", only to get immediately insta-killed. :3

If you need a justification for doing something then you probably know that it was the wrong thing to do. I'm not saying that there are worse exploits and hacks in WoW but if you want to make a point, don't "justify" it, state it.

Other than that, I'm always confused that people still play this game.

"Don't blame me for stealing your car, blame the car manufacturer for not make it secure enough in the first place! You can't blame me for showing them where there's an exploit in car-stealing to be found. It's not like I destroyed your car like those joy-riders would; no harm was done. Some people hate having their car nicked, but who doesn't like watching cop-chases on TV? Without us they wouldn't be so fun to watch!

And besides, who is really letting you down? It's not us - the cops should've stopped this from ever getting out of hand to the point where it pissed you off. That's my justification."

Excuses excuses. They did something bad because they'd get kicks out of doing it, and now they're trying to justify what they found fun to the hundreds of people who's fun they had hindered.

"I'm not as bad as other people" is a really shitty justification. Do better next time, WOW exploiter.

Those are some of the lamest excuses I've ever heard. Like, really, just pathetic.

I don't play WoW, so I don't have a vested interest. If it didn't do permanent damage, I don't know if a permanent ban would be needed. Temporary one though, with upgrade to permanent if they do anything like that again when they get back.

As justifications go, the quoted hacker's is weak ass (It's fine for me to act like an asshole 'cause other people act like even bigger assholes). However, I will concede that what went on didn't do any permanent harm. So players had got insta-killed and had to run back to their bodies from the graveyard, whoop de freakin' do. It's frustrating and annoying, sure, especially if your quest-giver was among those wiped out, requiring you to sit around and wait for him/her to respawn. But it didn't delete anyone's account, didn't completely warp their characters or empty their inventories or delete their I-went-through-hell-and-high-water-to-get-this armor or weapons. Overall I'd say as hacks go, this was mindless, troll-level humor (no, not THOSE trolls...) but nothing genuinely harmful. That doesn't justify it, but it at least makes it pretty inconsequential.

If you're standing around in a capital city doing nothing, your time isn't being wasted by getting killed.

Still, something should happen to those responsible because... Hm. Because killing is wrong? I guess.

You children sure do get mad when your WoW gets messed with.

Theres a thing called the sun outside. Go check it out.

Seriously this script kiddie makes a valid point on his "excuse" and you rage at him as if he tried to steal your grandmother's purse or someshit.

It kinbd of remind me of that past exploit when three horde players lure that big boss into Stormwind.
It was kind of funny to watch as it was sort of like an epidemic that spread and kill anyone on sight.

That comparison is really bad. Like, wow. That's so insanely bad. You're saying a person exploiting an in-game killcode that inconveniences some players is akin to someone stealing a car.

Back in my day you had to get creative to cause this kind of havoc on a server. Kids these days just push a button that kills everyone in sight. Hardly inspired.
