Seems those politicians weren't so incorrect with their "Deaths per Second" comment after all.

On-Topic this isn't anything special, there have been dozen of bugs like this (Kazzak kiting, Reckoning Bomb, Rampage Bomb, Mega Corruption, probably a few more I can't think of right now.)
Indeed. This whole thing reminded me of nothing more than the Hakkar plague. Fond memories...

Man, I heard about this yesterday and was about to log on to join in the dying, but was pretty sure it wasn't on my tiny server, nor would I have gotten there in time. I don't care if I'd have lost cash, it looked funny.

it's a prank, nothing more, people shouldn't get BANNED over this.
No, they should. It violates the various agreements made with Blizzard that are required to participate in the game.

Meh I've got mixed feelings about this. On one hand that's funny as hell but on the other they did just use a nasty exploit to kill a bunch of people so some sort of action should be taken against them. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

People still pay a monthly fee to play this game (for reasons beyond me). By doing this "prank", the hackers wasted other players' time, which means they wasted their money.
I haven't played this game for a long time and I don't intend to, but I hope that the hackers get banned.

Really wish that people knew the difference between hacking and exploiting...

When you write that somebody hacked the game, everyone immediately assumes Blizzard infrastructure has been compromised in some matter. Instead, it's just a bug exploit...something we see in every game and this is not the first time it has happened in WoW.

Wastes in game money too, dying at 85 costs between 20-40 gold depending on your gear, that's a substantial hit to folks like me who don't necessarily obsess over the game.

Yes because a company can identify a problem, report it, get the programmers in, find the issue, fix it, release a fix and reset the servers and user clients instantly. Asshole, Blizzard doesn't have live feeds of every single thing at the same time, it takes time to fix things saying "they didn't fix it yet" is not a good justification. Also saying that "at least its not as bad as gold farming" does not make your actions any less bad. God, I hate hacker logic its so full of idiocy.

Was I the only one who immediately thought of the South Park WoW episode when reading the title?
Nope, and it is because of that memory that this incident made me laugh. A lot.

Hell, even if I was part of the killed people, I'd laugh.

Why these people feel the need to rationalize and defend this is beyond me. You found a hack, you used it for the lulz and had fun pissing a lot of people off. There's no need to start with the "b-b-but we're not really hurting anyone and it's Blizzard's fault really!"

I guess he must have let the forum rage get to him, which is a pretty shitty quality in a troll.
It was probably more along the lines of "Blizz shouldn't ban us because of this."
I truly hope they are at least suspended from the game for this. They say it was only "inconvenient" to other players, but some players, who have a life, might only get a couple hours each day too play, and causing them too lose 30min of play time is still cutting their time by a quarter.

I was soo late to this party that I have never heard of this until this article and a post on kym. I was honestly out and about playing the game, didn't have time to sit around the capitols, get killed, and listen to trade chat about their favorite things before someone comes in with another hilarious mention of Thunderfury.

As for any 'punishment' doled out by blizzard to the exploiters, it is in the ToS that we arn't allowed to abuse exploits unless we are completely unaware of their nature, in essense, when you call yourself part of a 'group' doing the deed or being a 'haxploiter' then you've already outted yourself to the Blizzard 'play nice police.'

Initially this got my hopes up that a hacker had ruined a bunch of accounts, which oddly made me feel a little aroused.

Does that make me a bad person?

It's a good thing they got the Sword of a Thousand Truths in to stop the madness.

I expected to see hundreds of elves running in terror, or people banding together to defend themselves but people were just standing around and watching. I guess mass killings aren't as common in the World of Warcraft as they are in real life. A good thing I think. Let them take out those urges here.

I would say a suspension is just about the right punishment here. A ban would be going too far (they didn't do any real damage, after all), but a suspension would send the message that screwing with other players' experiences is not on.
