Metro: Last Light Drops Multiplayer

4A games may add multiplayer once Metro: Last Light ships but not before.

It's an increasingly common story: Single player game is released to critical and commercial success, developers announce sequel, sequel contains tacked-on multiplayer mode no one cares about, developer laments wasted time and money. It seemed like Metro: Last Light was set to follow the same pattern, but instead 4A has opted to scrap the game's multiplayer mode, for now.

"Right now we're 100% focused on the single player campaign and not thinking beyond that," revealed the studio. "We don't like throwing away work though, it's a project we could potentially return to after Metro: Last Light ships."

"We are gamers at the studio and really wanted to bring the world of Metro to life in a multiplayer environment. It was a decision made by us at 4A from the outset and THQ have since been supportive every step of the way, including our decision to put multiplayer on hold. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake to announce it when we did, but we're an enthusiastic team and wanted to be open about what we were making!"

At this point in the game's development it seems unlikely 4A will use their freed-up resources to add any extra content to the single player campaign - particularly since the 2013 release date hasn't changed - but it does mean the team can focus its efforts on fixing SP bugs. The MP component never really went beyond the prototype stage, meaning little time or effort was wasted.

Like those in BioShock 2 and Dead Space 2, I don't think Metro's shot at a multipayer mode would have been bad, it just doesn't seem like an addition that plays to the franchise's strengths. Then again, I remember looking at the previews for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and saying "what? Multiplayer? In a stealth game? That'll never work."

Maybe a tacked-on "New Game +" mode with Co-Op would be nice. But a game like Metro 2033/Last Light really should be played alone first and foremost. It's great that they're focusing on the game's strengths before anything else.

completely random and off topic, but the guy in the picture totally looks like an Alpha Series
in my opinion though, I don't mind MP being added to that type of games unless it's so bad that it, like, detracts from the experience
I mean, I wouldn't complain about content being added to the game

Jim Sterling's sage words have finally bore fruit! If not directly, then indirectly! There can be no doubt it was his popularity and ubiquity that caused 4A to realize their mistake and change their ways.

Thank God for him!

Good call as far as im concerned.

Single player was what made people want a sequel. Focus on what worked for you the first time

What makes you say so? The only times I remember being alone in the original Metro 2033 was part of the Library and the last 10 minutes of the game. You usually had at least one other person with you, occasionally a whole squad.

Good. This is one games that doesn't need it. Maybe a co-op mode, perhaps separate from the story, the way Chaos Theory did it.

The Bandit station, the battle between the Nazis and communists, the second time you go up to the surface, Black Staion and so on and so on. You were mostly on your own throughout the game.

OT: It seems to me they had no idea what to do with the multiplayer if they only had prototypes to go by so they just said screw it and scrapped the whole thing. Heck, I remember reading that the multiplayer was 12vs12 COD clone with perks and classes at one point.

Wow... THQ, you just earned some love, and perhaps a preorder for it. Really after EAs garbage of "Everygame MUST have online multiplayer!" it is good to see someone exhibiting just a little bit of logic and common sense.

Someone mentioned Co-Op. Co-op in any SP only game would be fucking awesome.

On that note, I think a competitive multi-player might work for Metro, provided they keep the dark, dreary, and quite shitty environments. I can imagine large maps with sections where a gas-mask may be required... Or small sections where one team may encounter a monster. I don't see Metro's multi-player working as something fast-paced, but something slow and tactical as ammo, manpower, and in some cases, air filters are very, very valuable resources.

Now... The hard part, accomplishing the right player mindset...

EA didn't say "everything MUST have online multiplayer" they said that "everything that has been green lighted has had an online aspect to it" basically saying that maybe not multiplay (unknown on online passes, but this is EA), but you can bet we will try and make you pay double for the game if we can.

OT: a developer did not give into the "multiplayer of death" though

Spec-Ops:The line probably had more to do with this then Jim, and if Jim is truly ubiquitus then shall his zombie hoard break down my door now....

still here...

Actually, this is great!

If multiplayer really IS the draw that EA insists it is, then adding on a decent multiplayer post-shipping will boost sales. If it isn't, then they'll maintain sales with a single player campaign that's in better shape than it could be.

Awesome!

...and how it worked, one of the best multiplayer modes of all time, bested only by Chaos Theory...which just makes the subsequent slide into shit the franchise undertook all the more disappointing.

Day Z... IN POST APOCALYPTIC RUSSIA!

I'd love to see a multiplayer game where attrition is an actual problem. That would be awesome.

Well if you play Metro in anything but single player you defeat the purpose of it's existence, these games do depressing loneliness like nothing else out there.

*Cheers* YES! YES! I am SO freaking happy! I loved Metro 2033. There is NO place for a multiplayer in a game like Metro. Co-op? Maybe, and even that's pushing it. Games like Metro and S.T.A.L.K.E.R are made to be majorly Single player. That's the thing they're good at! The feel of loneliness! I am so hyped for this game now. Will probably Pre-order.

There are games that shoudl focus on singlepalyer (bioshock, dead space, metro) and there are games that should focus on multiplayer (MMos, COD, BF, ect) and its good that game creators are starting to learn that.
