Cliffy B Offers to Help Capcom Fix Resident Evil

Resident Evil 6 disappointed critics, and apparently also Cliff Bleszinksi.

Once hailed as the ultimate survival horror franchise, Resident Evil has wandered further and further from its roots in recent years. The recent Resident Evil 6 has been met with mixed reviews, with many critics declaring the game dead-on-arrival. But fear not, Raccoon City citizens, industry veteran Cliff Bleszinksi will make it all better. In a recent tongue-in-cheek tweet, the former Gears of War designer quips "Hey, Capcom. Call me. We can fix Resident Evil. Together."

Of course we have to assume Bleszinski was merely commenting on the somewhat disappointing sixth numbered iteration of the series, but that didn't stop a number of Japanese gaming blogs from spreading the tweet. Bleszinski even noted that he has received a huge wave of new Japanese followers on his Twitter account since cracking the joke.

Bleszinski recently departed Epic Games after two decades of work. Gamers are likely most familiar with him from his work on the Gears series, though he was also instrumental in the Unreal franchise from 1999 to the most recent release, Unreal Tournament III, in 2007. The well-known designer hasn't stated what his next project will be, but despite his apparent willingness to bring Resident Evil back from the dead, we doubt we'll see his name associated with Resident Evil 7.

Let me guess...

Resi 7 will forget what color is, will have hyper-masculine male characters with hyper-masculine idiot lines, and will be even more poorly written?

Cliffy B isn't in a position to talk about fixing things, he's better at breaking them. Maybe that's the joke.

Seems fitting that the creator of successful generic brown third-person-shooter with monsters would try and give advice to Capcom's franchise that has now become a generic dark third-person-shooter with monsters.

So let me make a check list of things Cliffy would add in:
Chest high walls everywhere
More grit and extremely overly muscular characters- looks like Chris won't be the only one who looks like he's on steroids
Meat shields
Bad AI for friendly NPCs- I'm looking at you Dom! Get on the damn platform, I'm on the crane!

I miss the time when Resident Evil was still a horror game. Course that was back when Capcom used to listen to their fans. >.>

Well, Resident Evil has pretty much turned into Gears of War anyway only minus the decent cover transitions.

And are we seriously going to keep using that picture on any Resident Evil story?

Oh yes, because Gears of War is so well known for its psychological development, deep characters, subtlety and atmosphere.

Considering how well the entire Gears of War series did and that there was no steady decline in that series (i'm looking at you Bioware!!!) It's really funny to think that anyone would consider Cliff's input into the next Resident Evil as a bad thing. I mean he already stated that the overly muscled COGs weren't part of his initial concept for GoW. I think he could bring a lot of good ideas to Resident Evil. On the other hand, RE couldn't get possibly any worse...

Kinda funny how Cliffy B clearly thought he was gonna be lauded and praised as the savior Capcom needed, but instead he's getting panned for his own mediocre games.

Anyway, I doubt Capcom thinks Resident Evil needs fixing. 6 has sold great so far.

But, it's already a crappy third person shooter with an even crappier cover system. Or was he going to suggest making it an FPS? I know that is Epic's first line of thought about this shit, and I'm sure Cliffy B played no small part in that while he was at Epic.

I'll help right now:

Get rid of the horrible vehicle sections in the game. They don't fit into the game and they are very poorly executed. Move the damn camera out from the characters and while your messing with the camera, stop making it focus on objectives and taking the camera control away from the user. It is really annoying when it happens and I"m surrounded by enemies and get killed. I really like Leon's campaign, so much that before playing all the others I figured I would trade in the PS3 version for the PC version when it came out. But Chris and Jake's campaign has cured me of that terrible idea. I haven't been able to bring myself to beat Ada's campaign, I'm just tired of the disappointment. I like the intersecting story points and seeing the way things unfold from other perspectives. But they sections shouldn't be long and drawn out like they are. The idea of going through the village battle with the huge BOW makes me want to smash my disc. The first time I played it, the game made it very unclear as to what I was actually supposed to do. The second time I was just easy. You got rid of all the replayability that RE5 had with new and much inferior upgrade system. Hey look, I can run through a whole campaign and not max out any level 3 upgrades! That is a horrible idea. The gun upgrade thing was awesome. And I love how they wanted to put lots of guns into the game, that is cool. But the lack of an inventory system that allows you to choose what to take with you is a nightmare. I died a bunch of times simply by trying to find the right gun for the situation... because I'm carrying 7 of them. In RE4 and RE5, I simply took the weapons I wanted to take with me. Also, I haven't tried it but, you can turn infinite ammo on from the start? Are you kidding me. The way RE5 played out is you got to unlock that after upgrading the gun all the way, and you had to spend game points earned through play to unlock each weapons infinite ammo after that. I replayed RE5 countless times because while it wasn't a really good RE game, it was still a really good game.

Sorry, lost it on that one a bit. But it's all out of my system now.

Yes, Cliffy B. isnt an authority on horror games.

However, if hes willing to work for Capcom i cant see a man with a high notoriety in the western gaming world with 20 years of experience in a variety of roles and with several highly successful franchises to his name going unnoticed to whoever is in charge at Capcom.

Well he couldn't do any worst that what RE6 is now . Why not give him a shot . If he suceeds RE regains it's respect , if not , well capcom can blame him an only him , win/win .

I don't believe RE is a dead series , just an UNdead series , which is much , much worst .

Sweet jesus, it doesn't even take the proverbial drop of a hat to set off the bitching, does it? Some people like Gears of War, and like it or not, Cliffy is obviously more competent in the genre than Capcom, and Capcom obviously is moving towards a third-person-shooter style game.

Logical mob-mentality: If you are really well-known for one thing, that is the only thing you can ever do, according the public.

Give the bastard a chance, guys. If the only thing he had in mind for Resident Evil is a generic third-person-shooter about killing monsters, then he wouldn't have any problem at all.

That said, I'm not one of those who thinks the Gears series is "holding back gaming" or whatever. The games don't harm anyone for their existence, so if you don't like them, you don't like them. Me? I don't like them. And that's all I need to say.

There is a certain irony that RE6 sucks because its trying so hard to emulate Gears of War.. and the guy who made Gears of War thinks he can fix it. I'm scared to think what his definition of "Fix" is.

No series is bad because it's holding back gaming. However, this industry is built around rip-off-sploitation these days. Gears of War was successful? Now every other third person action game tries to copy it.

And let's face it, if Cliffy was given the driver's seat for RE7, it would be because some big shot at Capcom said "He can make RE7 a better Gears clone than RE6 was," not because he had some new or neat ideas to revitalize the RE series.
