THQ Delays South Park, Company of Heroes 2 and Metro: Last Light

Chances are if you were interested in a game THQ was publishing this year, it was pushed back.

The California-based games publisher THQ hasn't exactly been going strong the last few years. Sure, THQ scored a modest hit with Red Faction: Armageddon [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9221-Saints-Row-The-Third-Review] and Homefront threatened to submarine the value of its stock and make the company insolvent. Just when THQ seemed to bounce back - growing to $146 million in net sales reported last quarter - three of THQ's most anticipated games will slip later into 2013 and perhaps beyond.

South Park: The Stick of Truth, the Obsidian-developed RPG was supposed to release on March 3, 2013 but THQ delayed it to "early fiscal 2014." Given that THQ's fiscal year begins in April, we may not see the South Park game until next summer.

"I believe South Park's market opportunity is significant. It is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated titles of calendar 2013. It is also an expansive title, encompassing multiple television seasons' worth of content," said Jason Rubin, the President at THQ, in a press release. "We have been working closely with the co-creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, to make sure all of the game's content performs to the high standards of the TV show, and this takes time. THQ is committed to giving gamers no less than the rich South Park game they have been waiting for and deserve."

Also delayed are two sequels: the eerie shooter Metro: Last Light and the RTS Company of Heroes 2. Both games were also slated to come out in March 2013, but the only detail we have on the release now is sometime next year.

"I believe Metro: Last Light is a title that should set standards for visuals with its stunning atmosphere, unique location and cutting-edge style," Rubin continued. "Company of Heroes was one of the highest rated RTS titles in history, and Relic insists that the sequel live up to its pedigree. Giving both of these titles time to reach their full potential is the right thing to do for the products."

I respect THQ's commitment to making excellent games. Given its recent track record, the next few games coming from the publisher could make or break the whole enterprise so I understand Rubin's reluctance to ship games of poor quality just to meet our expectations.

But if you're a fan of any of these games, it's hard to read this news without a heartfelt sigh. "Well, shit..."

Damn, I was really looking forward to The Stick of Truth. 2014 seems like a long time. Id rather have a great game in 2014 then a half baked on next year though. Same goes for CoH and the new Metro as well. Those great games deserve a great sequel.

They're giving Relic more time to complete the game? That would have been nice last year, instead of laying off most of the senior staff and dropping all support for Retribution and Spess Mahreen.

Well, Last Light has two things going against it: It's an easy type of game to get utterly wrong, and it's got the expectation of outdoing the first game (which was practically a sleeper hit, relatively speaking). So I'm going to give THQ the benefit of the doubt and hope (beyond hope, maybe, but I can't always be a cynic) that this will make for an even better game upon release.

I understand and respect their decision...but it still hurts. Hopefully it adds some polish to the games and helps THQ take a few steps in the right direction. I was really looking forward to Metro: Last Light, but eh, what are you gonna do?

...but still, 20414?!?

Just FYI, but "Early Fiscal 2014" still means like Summer 2013 so its not as long a delay as you might think. Still sucks though but that's okay. Bioshock Infinite will keep me occupied. Not to mention my gigantiic backlog of games that only seems to grow larger over time...

2014?!?! Man, I had the money put away for South Park. I was ready to break all my tenets and get the ultra-collector's edition, whatever pre-order stupid items they were offering, and all the DLC. I mean, Obsidian's working on project eternity...so they were done with this, right? I reeealy hope this isn't continually pushed back into vaporware. Please stop hating money.

Oh, and Metro 2033 was a gorgeous experience on the PC, and I had my eyes open for a more polished sequel. Dammit.

To be honest I'm glad to hear about Metro: Last Light and Company of Heroes 2. I don't mind waiting a bit longer knowing that they will be given more time to make them even better.

Ugh... I hope this doesn't mean that games like Darksiders 3 may be left in development hell indefinatly. I mean if Stick of Truth is gonna be pushed back a few years, development of new games may take even longer. I'd just hate to see the series unresolved.

Overall though, that whole Udraw thing really bit THQ hard, hopefully they can recover, in this economy so many ships are sinking.

Hey look.. a company made 5 games.. the two shitty, COD wannabes flopped along with the kids toy game. The other two, which had some originality and personality to them, didn't. Maybe this should be a learning experience.

I am in complete support of giving Obsidian more time to finish a game rather that the more traditional less time.

Why do I read this to mean "we've had our market analysts go over our games compared to other games, and we're stopping to take extra time to make sure we including the following successful features: fast moving zombies, slow moving zombies, mutated monstrosity zombies, online-only single player, a multi-player leveling system with rank based unlocks, titles more accommodating to an endless stream of vanity item DLC but no actual content, and a real money auction house."

Aw come on, I'm not fond of survival shooters to the South Park RPG looked pretty cool. I though friggen CoH2 was coming out in January (nice try Amazon). Bloody hell THQ, get it together.

I appreciate the sentiment that some of the games needed more time anyway but I find that hard to swallow in the case of CoH2; name a Relic game that was crappy at launch... that's what I thought.
