54,000 Gamers Ask for GTA V PC Port

Modders want to play around in the GTA V sandbox, but need a PC port to make their dreams reality.

"Please release GTA V on PC," the online petition [http://www.change.org/petitions/rockstar-release-gta-v-on-pc] asks Rockstar. "GTA games have been a large part of so many people's lives and it's a big shame not seeing the newest iteration of the game being released on the most powerful platform." That petition has over 54,000 signatures at time of writing, and is shooting for 100,000.

"Things like modifications have always been a HUGE part of PC gaming," the petition adds, "and modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have." That's no lie; we've seen everything from sunny San Andreas for Niko [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119502-Stampede-Through-Liberty-City-in-GTA-IVs-Elephant-Mod]. Yet Rockstar hasn't always been in a rush to bring its titles to PC, as anyone still waiting for Red Dead Redemption can attest.

Rockstar hasn't said no to a PC port, at least not yet. "Everything else is up for consideration," said Dan Houser when asked why there had been no PC announcement [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120710-Grand-Theft-Auto-V-for-PC-and-Wii-U-Up-For-Consideration]. "That's all I can give you ... But we can do what we want wherever there's the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market."

"If that's on Apple we put something on Apple," Houser said.

GTA V is intended for release in Spring 2013, just on consoles for now.

I don't get why GTA games are not always on the PC in the first place. Developers always talk about how easy it is for Xbox games to be on the PC compared to PS3 due to similarities, so why on earth is it not the case with one of the largest franchises in gaming? It's not like they'd lack for buyers.

It's true, I've seen some AMAZING mods for GTA in the past. I'm not sure that 100,000 people saying they will buy it if it comes to PC will enough for Rockstar to consider a port though.

As always, time well tell.

GTA IV's PC release was atrocious, sure about a million pirated it,couldn't run it properly, because it was a horrid port and never looked back, but now with dozens of patches over the years,GTA IV's multiplayer on PC is still going! Can you say the same for consoles which don't look back and just let the latest CoD dominate the scene?
Ben Buja's videos are proof that the multiplayer scene is still in existence. Not to mention the mods that people have crafted for the game, they are insane. When selling a game on the PC market you go for the long run,the game will keep selling and selling and selling and selling and selling over the years and you're sure to make a profit with such a big franchise after the first few months despite massive pirating(by massive I'm implying piracy outside US,UK,Germany,France and other economically developed countries).

So in the end with a decent port and some kind of mod support(seriously relinquish some control of your beloved IP and let us create or improve something you've never thought of),this game will explode on PC and will keep going for a good year at least, unlike consoles which will probably stop after the first month of sales.Of course I understand you want to pay back the investments possibly in the first week, which is how console version sales work, but on PC it's different,we will wait for a bargain and when it comes up,you will feel it.

I played through GTA4 on the 360 and enjoyed it all, then I really enjoyed Lost and Damned, I think that's about my all time favorite DLC on any game. But when I got it on the PC I have to say I felt underwhelmed. It's a pretty shoddy port and definitely one for those with a monster PC. The saddest thing about no-PC is certainly the lack of modding, all modders want is an approachable game engine and some freedom and they can do remarkable things, but maybe GTA isn't that game anymore, maybe Skyrim or Saints Row, or ARMAII, or whatever. Modding GTA4 makes it closer to being as much fun as GTA SA, still a long way off but it's something.

GTA is console centric these days, GTA5 looks superb even on the aging console hardware we have right now, I'll buy it, and so will millions. Maybe it's better to wait on Rockstar making a shedload of cash on it before hopeing for a port.

In the meantime, the map editor stuff for Farcry3 looks awesome, that might tide the creatives out there until we maybe get a PC port of GTA.

Yay! My voice has become one of a legion of people!

Seriously though, Rockstar, I'm only going to play your games on the PC. I'm going to pay for them, if you'll release them for me. Why can't I buy Red Dead Redemption, and preorder GTA V?

It's not that hard to port it, and while I'll ***** about a shitty port, so long as it is workable and you let us know it's impossible to run, I can live with it.

Remember the really, really horrible GTA IV port?

Just be careful what you wish for, is all I'm saying.

Yeah - on top of that, remember the petition for Dark Souls on PC? That certainly turned out super well.

As someone who fluctuates between PC and console, I would love a PC version if it's good, but won't mind too much if there isn't one.

If you're looking for the potential market you could, i don't know, look at Steam?
Wonder how many copies of GTA4 have sold on Steam.

I bet 5 bucks that within 10 minutes console fanboys will start a petty flamewar.
OT: It would be stupid to not make a pc version but then again this is rockstar we are talking about.

Well consider that right now there are 64,866 signatures as of the second I am writing this.

If they released it on day 1 along with the console versions they would net them just under 4 million dollars minus whatever steam takes for hosting it there.

I really hope they release it on the PC personally
And minus the cost of resources to actually port it. I really hope they release it for PC too, I just don't see it being a day 1 release on PC.

Also don't forget that not everyone that signs the petition will actually buy it. Some people will sign it out of principle.

Reading between the lines, some of the arguments put forward for a PC release aren't likely to persuade Rockstar or their publisher.

"Things like modifications have always been a HUGE part of PC gaming," the petition adds, "and modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have."
AKA

"Please release your game on PC so we can modify it because we don't think your vision of your game will be good enough".

That show of faith in Rockstar's work is really going to make them want to release it on the PC. They should really be saying that they want a PC release so they can buy and enjoy the game on their PC, not because it will be a barely adequate game that they can "improve" because they know better than the game's makers.

I'm surprised that the petition writers didn't also include another persuasive argument along the lines of:

"Steam Sales and try-before-you-buy are a huge part of PC gaming and waiting until the game is 75% off is some of the cheapest fun you can have on the most powerful platform".

I'm not surprised that Rockstar are hesitant to release the game to people who won't appreciate it for what it is and want to undo and tinker with their hard work, they suffered enough negative attention from modding with Red Dead Redemption on the consoles, i.e. those videos of Donkey-Woman and Cougar-Man that even made it to the national press and were being presented as examples of Rockstar's shoddy work and a buggy game, those were actually fake glitches made by modders who decompiled the data and put NPC skins on animal's skeletons.

There need to be enough incentives for Rockstar to release a PC version and the desire for PC owners to decompile their game isn't one of them.

But it has been shown that mod support in popular games bring in long-term benefits. Just look at how TES:Oblivion didn't need to lower its price drastically right until the release of Skyrim (which in turn had its mod support prominently advertised), the Half Life 2 modding scene, or how DayZ, an ArmA mod, suddenly brought a several year old game into the top of the Steam sales chart.

I don't really understand your reasoning. Undo their hard work? Mods aren't doing anything to other people's vanilla game. And have you seen the depravity of the TES modding scene on Nexus? It doesn't diminish Bethesda games by any margin, whatsoever.

How does wanting to modifying a game mean we know better than them. Most people who use mods normally play through the game without any mods at first unless there is something they really dislike. Mods are there to increase a games lifespan.

Your argument makes it seem like you don't know a single popular mod for GTA 4. I don't think the makers of the friction less car mod, the horse mod, the elephant mod, the San Andrea mod, or the trainers thought they knew better than the game makers at Rockstar
