Email Hacker Sentenced to 10 Years Imprisonment

Uploading nude photos of Scarlett Johansson comes with a hefty price.

A federal judge has sentenced Christopher Chaney, of Jacksonville, FL, to ten years in prison for breaking into the personal online accounts of several women, including actresses Mila Kunis and Scarlett Johansson.

Chaney was charged with illegally accessing the email accounts of over 50 individuals in the entertainment industry from November 2010 to October 2011, and then uploading personal photos and other sensitive materials to the internet. The information stolen included several nude photos Scarlett Johansson had taken of herself for her former husband Ryan Reynolds. During the course of his digital crime spree, Chaney also targeted two women he knew personally, and was accused of sending nude photos of one of the victims to her father.

Prosecutors were initially seeking six years imprisonment, but U.S. District Judge S. James Otero had concerns that Chaney had shown "callous disregard" for his actions and may attempt to commit similar crimes in the future. In addition to his decade-long prison term, Chaney will also have to serve three years of supervised probation upon his release, and will be required to notify officials of his online accounts.

Given that Chaney could have faced a maximum sentence of 60 years under the law, one may consider he got off lucky.

The photos also destroy Richard Dawkins, because those photos not only prove there is a god but also prove that he is male. Its the only explanation, because nothing that perfect could happen by chance.

Here's a legitimate question. Why did these women have pictures of themselves naked on their own phones in the first place?

EDIT: yay post 200!
EDIT 2: It's a rhetorical question, don't want an actual answer.

10 years for spreading private nude photos? How many years do people usually get for causing bodily harm? Or for sexual assault?
Don't get me wrong, it must have been a terrible inconvenience for Mrs. Johansson and her glorius body, but isn't 10 years still a bit too much? I mean, just think of how much good those nude shots of Mrs. Johansson will do in this world; one could argue that Mr. Chaney should be rewarded for his services for mankind.

Also: there is something wrong in the system if you can get 60 years in jail for this kind of stuff.

If he did that to me I'd nail him to the wall. Invasion of privacy is more damaging than it sounds. It's even worse for celebrities because most of them are struggling to stay away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi on a daily basis. And then something like this happens. Imagine if you found out that someone was constantly invading your phone and changing your password. And like that wasn't enough he stole something from your phone and released it to the public, knowing that it can be harmful to you. I have no sympathy for this man.

Do you have a girlfriend? You'd be surprised how often girls take nude picture of themselves to send to their boyfriends. It's a part of sexting. Me and my gf do it every time we're away from each other. Which is also what Scarlett did. The photos were for her husband. Well, ex-husband now.

Agreed. American system of piling up sentences is ridiculous. I used to live in America. Now I live in Europe. In the country I currently reside in, when you're accused of multiple crimes, the maximum penalty you can get is the maximum penalty for the biggest crime you committed. For example if you committed 3 crimes for which you can get 2, 3 and 5 years max, you can get 5 years max, unless there are some other aggravating circumstances, but they can only get you up to 2 more years or a hefty fine.

10 years is way too severe a punishment for this IMO, not to mention the 60 years(which is flat out ridiculous).

Not really. Most articles don't mention that he's also guilty of identity theft. They only talk about celebrities.

And it stories like this seem to confirm my belief that its a really dumb idea unless you delete the photos very soon after receiving them. Nothing personal I just hear stories way too often where someone gets humiliated when phone theft and/or a vengeful ex results in "personal photos" ending up public.

OT:
Did this hateful moron really think he could get away with this? I say we tack a few more years on that sentence just for being so stupid.

There is no danger if you're just a bit tech savvy. Statistically most girls aren't into nerdy things and knowing stuff about technology. Luckily, my girl is very tech savvy.

You mentioned ONE of his victims. He did this to over 50 people, so 60 years divided by 50 (at least) crimes, equals about 14 months per victim. Ya, he got off way to light.

Second point, Rape is a crime. You are wondering "What the f***, who said anything about Rape?". You take a private nude photo, intended for your husband/wife, and post it for the world to see, in an attempt to humiliate/profit from it, similar damage done to the victim. I admit, not quite as much, but still a psychological attack none-the-less.

Lastly, do not respond to this quote. I am done talking to a sexist, bigot, who believes that just because a person looks good and is in the public view, They have no rights to privacy or human dignity.

If you earn the sort of money Scarlett Johansson does for the work she does, she really only has herself to blame for not learning how to properly secure her personal devices from criminal intrusion. Which is not to say the guy doesn't deserve a 10-year sentence for his numerous criminal actions, I just feel that this is something that a person with a net worth of 55 million should be able to do.

So what you're saying is, celebrities DO use e-mail addresses. Fascinating.

Anyway yeah I'm pretty sure I've seen people get less jail time for killing people so this seems kind of harsh comparatively, I can't say I have any sympathy for him though. Whatever, judges are weird.
