UPDATE: Professional Thieves Steal 7,000 Wii Us

The thieves nabbed the consoles from a warehouse in Seattle, Washington.

Update: Seattle police reported today that they have found two trucks involved in the theft of these Nintendo consoles. Police found the smaller box truck in the nearby municipality of Fife, Washington, with the commercial logos removed, and a semi truck in Auburn with the vehicle identification number covered up and a new company name "S.S. Trans" painted on the sides. But while some of the evidence of the theft was recovered, police are no closer to finding the 7,000 consoles stolen. They are still hot on the chase.

"SeaTac detectives are working with the Los Angeles based Cargo Theft Task Force on the case," said a police spokesperson. "Detectives said that the reward in the case has also been increased to $10,000 thanks to donations from private businesses."

I don't know if 10 grand will make up for the $2.45 million the merchandise is worth, but we'll see if any good Samaritan comes forth with information. Also, the police reports specifically mention the Nintendo "Wii" with no indication of a "Wii U" so it's unclear what the exact value of the theft actually is.

Original post: We've heard of a few high-profile heists in the last six months. There were the Goodfellas-styled pilferage of 3,600 iPad Minis [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120473-Russian-Supercriminal-Makes-Off-With-80-000-Pounds-of-Walnuts]. But neither of those capers will hit the gaming community more than the report today that thieves somehow made off with 7,000 Wii Us from a warehouse at Seatac Airport. According to the police, the crooks drove two diesel semi truck cabs to the warehouse around 9pm Saturday night and backed them up to trailers already at the warehouse. They loaded 64 pallets of boxes containing Wii Us using the forklifts in the facility, and stole an official airport box truck to get the last of their load. The police are stumped, and have turned to the public to learn if they have any tips as to where these consoles might be.

"I've been a cop for 28 years, and I've never seen anything like this," said Sgt. Cindy West. "This has come straight out of the movies."

What's not clear is whether the Wii U stolen were black Deluxe versions, the Basic kit, or a mixture. The Deluxe package retails for $350, so it's possible the thieves made off with $2.45 million worth of merchandise. Police are searching for two white trucks with a trailer marked with the word "McKinney" and a box truck with "Seattle Air Cargo" on the door.

"If we don't get any tips ahead of time, it will be the selling of these consoles that will lead to their capture," she continued. "It's gonna be pretty hard to hide 7,000 Wii game consoles."

In other words, if these consoles start showing up being sold out of the back of a Lincoln in mall parking lots across the country, we might have something to go on. Nintendo might even have some way of tracking these devices, especially if they start trying to access the internet.

There's no word on how this will affect supplies of Wii Us in legitimate retail stores this holiday season. Some the stolen consoles may have been destined to be in the hands of a kid next Tuesday, and that means we'll have 7,000 less videos like this to share this Christmas. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlcqWQVVuU] That's sad ... I think.

I don't know, there seem to be plenty in my area. My Target even has the black ones. Maybe there will be a rush, but I doubt it.

Really, just because a group of someones pull off something in a competent manner doesnt make them a professional. A competent job implies that theyve done this before, not that someone has contracted them to do it.

Really? I feel kind of silly right now. I got mine a couple of days after launch, the white one for $325. Some were in the 600-800 range. If I could have just walked into a damn store and gotten a black for less money than my white, and have Nintendo Land to play...that kinda sucks, I guess.

I hope the Oceans 11 music was playing while this happened.

But actually, as someone that works retail, this really irks me. Such losses affect the low-level employees first. Besides, with Wii U's in-stock and not so highly in demand (for now at least), how are they going to fence them for their market value? I mean, all of my local stores have them in stock and I live in an averaged size town. I mean, they'll profit no matter what, but I'm forced to wonder how much. I readily admit that I'm not well versed on the topic.

Jesus! If they don't get caught, that's gonna hurt Nintendo, and whoever was about to sell them quite a lot!
Not really, Nintendo already likely sold those consoles to various stores within the area, so they are already paid and done.

The only ones really hurt by this are the stores themselves, who are out on the money paid for said shipments and are now losing them.
I'd assume that Seatac Airport has some sort of insurance that would help them reimburse the owners of the stolen stock.

Professionals in Seattle, eh?

Okay, what you want to do is get on the net and look up a company by the name of Saeder-Krupp, but don't just contact them all willy-nilly. Find yourself a good decker or just a good connections man to get you in touch with 'Mr. Lofwyr'. Chances are, he can find who we're dealing with and impart the information onto the Renraku boys, who will conveniently 'find' the Wiis in a warehouse somewhere and no trace of the runners thieves anywhere, ever.

I like to imagine they drove the trucks down to the nearest river and just dumped them all in the water. Monitor the sales now, guys!

Usually for a haul like that they will have a buyer lined up already, they might even end up on a container and shipped overseas. They seemed to know exactly what they where after so its not a random "lets nick these" type of theft.

Hmmm....

Walnuts, iPad Minis and Wii Us....

Is it strange that all 3 stolen items can also all be cracked?

I find this to be slightly amusing.

Professional just means that this is how they make their living, it wasn't a crime of opportunity by some normal joe walking past who saw the door open and decided to do it there and then.

If they've done it before then obviously being thieves is how they make their money, therefore they are professional.

Contracts have nothing to do with it.

A hem please check your MSRP, and value calc (if obtained from the source it is still wrong) the deluxe version retails for 350 USD which comes out to 2.45 million USD on the upper end, and the 2.1 on the lower end

I have a feeling George Cloonie was involved in this, or at the very least Matt Daemon.

OT: have these people heard of security, or do they just thing that Wii will do it?
