Miyamoto Wants Pikmin 3 to Stress You Out

The newest Pikmin title will harken back to the series' roots.

Pikmin 3 is one of the most hotly-anticipated upcoming titles for the new Wii U, and according to Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto, the third installment of the beloved series will feel like a throwback to the original. In an interview with GamesMaster, Miyamoto notes that while Pikmin 2 may have been a bit of a cakewalk compared to its predecessor, gamers shouldn't expect the same welcoming vibe from the newest title.

"Our main aim in Pikmin 2 was to get rid of any stress as much as possible, so that it would be very user-friendly," he explains. "Well, I myself couldn't agree with that direction perfectly. That kind of nature of Pikmin 1 was exactly what I wanted to reproduce and I was actually intentionally doing so, so that Pikmin 1 could be a strategic game."

This is certainly fine news for fans of the original title, but as far as stress goes, hasn't the roughly 9-year wait for a new Pikmin game been stressful enough? Pikmin 2 was released in 2004 and Pikmin 3 was confirmed as being in development in 2008. It's now 2013. Cut us a break here, Miyamoto.

After being delayed from the Wii U launch window, Pikmin 3 is now scheduled to hit stores sometime in Spring 2013.

That was exactly what made the second game better for me. I dislike games that can be unwinnable by halfway through but you won't know until later, unless you already know how many parts there are, how difficult/time-consuming they are to get, etc. The first game was near impossible to win on a first playthrough without a strategy guide.

P.S. Thanks

Yes... YEEEEEES! :D

I loved Pikmin 2. The fact that there was more enemy variety and little stuff like the Piklopedia was fantastic. But it was super easy by the end. About halfway through the game, I pretty much had hundreds and hundreds of each kind of Pikmin, plowing my way through each level.

Goddammit, Nintendo, don't screw this up! This might be the only reason that I buy a WiiU!

I dislike time limits in games. Even the day/night cycle annoyed me in Pikmin 2. Oh well, plenty of other games to play.

Dang it Miyamoto I have anxiety and stress issues already! Don't make them worse for me! >.<

OT: Well I'm glad they're gonna make it more challenging, but I do hate time limits in games. Mainly I'm looking at the first Fallout for causing this hatred.

Hmm, perhaps it's time to play some Pikmin. Time limits do sound a bit unpleasant though.

More stressful? They should take a page from Mario Kart then; Require something that requires a near flawless play through to achieve, that stick something in that appears whenever the heck it wants (and often at the worst of times), specifically designed to ruin your day if you happen to be winning, making you have to replay that segment over and over again until the game finally let's you off the hook.
Yet the rest of the game is great fun.

I'm in the "thrilled to hear this" camp. Loved the teeth-gnashing challenge of Pikmin 1, but I also loved the scale & variety of Pikmin 2; luckily, these things are not mutually exclusive

P.S.: Does anyone here actually think it will release in Spring? Me either

i think the entire point of pikmin is to make you ragequit, and that not liking it because of that doesn't make you a bad person

I'm not sure what to think about this...

I'm not saying it'll be a bad thing, but I remember Pikmin 1 and I remember getting stressed the fuck out with only having 30 days and the days being so short, and I couldn't play it because of it. I'm not saying it's a bad game, I certainly appreciated it, but I was always too anxious to pick it up and play it because of the 30 day time limit.
Same here. Even after a very recent replay of the it, I was too damn scared to play the game for fear that I'd screw up and kill Olimar.

Still one of my most cherished franchises, but damn Miyamoto, you're killin' me if you're thinking of bringing those sweaty palms back.

I think that's a bad move. I dislike that timer. I dislike it so much i won't be buying the third if it has a timer. I hate timed events in games.

If anything, I HATED the timer on the first one, that was the only thing that ruined the game for me. Not making it on time and getting Olimar to die due to lack of oxygen was the worst, I didn't even got to play through the whole thing cuz I messed up 2 days in a row and didn't want to start a new one. But since it's on Wii U I dont' care too much tbh, I'm not really thinking of getting that system.

I don't remember the first being harder, apart from the time limit which was unwelcome stress.
In addition if anybody tries to convince me Pikmin 2 was relaxing my counterpoint would be thus: Submerged Castle and the F**KING Water Wraith. I spent days afterwards cleaning up all the pee and poo from that encounter, my undies had to be thrown out.

I love difficulty in games, except for time-based difficulty. I like to take my time, survey the area, and plan things out. That made Pikmin relatively hard for me. So if they mean that its going to have a time-limit, well, that sucks. But any other form of difficulty or would enjoy.

I thought Satan retired from the gaming buisness back in '06. Apparently he's making a comeback.
